The best weekends are those you spend with people you care about and enjoying a shared activity together. In April 2022, we ent on our first camping trip together. It was the first time all three of will be together in one trip. We were choosing between Big Sur and Sequioa but because of weather conditions, we decided to go to Big Sur. There are a number of camp sites in Big Sur - those that are by reservation and those that are on a first come first serve basis. We planned on staying from Tuesday to Thursday and decided to risk it with one of the first come first serve basis campsites - Kirk Creek.
Kirk Creek is located in Los Padres National Forest in Big Sur. It is on the top of a cliff and has the most amazing view of the Pacific Ocean. There are no showers, water source or phone signal in the campground but there is a toilet (vault type so there is no flush) that is cleaned by the camp manager twice a day so it is clean.
Make sure to bring your own supply of water for drinking, cooking and washing your dishes. Each site has their own fire pit, grill and table for convenience. There are covered trash bins in every section of the camp site. You can bring your own firewood or buy from the camp manager. Each bundle of wood was selling for $7.
We had good weather in April. It was very windy and chilly on our first night because of the rains that just poured the day before but after our first night, we had very pleasant weather. It was still spring time so we did not have any problems with flies or bugs.
There are several hiking trails nearby and Kirk Creek trail starts from the campground and leads you down to Kirk Creek. If you go further down the trail and past the creek, you will reach a portion of the Big Sur coastline. There are some young redwoods in the Kirk Creek Trail. Redwoods are scattered all over Big Sur, as well as Eucalyptus trees.
We also went to Sand Dollar Beach, a 15-minute drive from our campsite. It has a wide and long shore with lots of sand crabs. We didn't see any sand dollar but the sand crabs were fun to observe as they dig their way into the sand and then see them revealed by the water as it comes rushing in and out of the shore.
Some tips:
1. Bring gallons of water. There is water source in another campsite where you can re-fill you water container but please be respectful of that camp ground's rules.
2. Know what poison ivy looks like because Big Sur coastline is riddled with them so better know what you need to avoid.
3. It can get windy on the coast so prepare to bring portable cooking stove that can withstand strong winds.
