Apologies folks - I had to fix an audio issue (low volume) before re-uploading this video. A few people commented on the original upload, and I think those comments are lost for good. Thanks to those that did, including the person who highlighted the audio issue. And DAMMIT! There's one album in here from 1974 that I got mixed up with another. 🙄

Thanks David, it’s a lot better now (in my judgement 😊). Fantastic selection, we have many cross-overs. Sidenote: Donna Summer was my first crush. Sorry Kate, you will always be second, we cannot airbrush history) 😊

I was only 7 years old in 1977 so the only memories I could share is going to see 'Sinbad and the Eye of The Tiger' at my local ABC 😁....I feel I was born too late and missed an incredible decade for music.

Hello Mister Atkinson, great selection (as usual). When one thinks about it, Bill Brufford left Yes after the release of ''Close To The Edge'' because he was into jazz , which is ironic because with their Relayer album, they will be just making the most jazz-fusion of their entire Yes'discography a couple of years after his departure. The reminiscence of Alice Cooper you were mentioning about Peter Gabriel's debut album is likely because of Dick Wagner's contribution, I guess. PS I loved the ''before Lady In Red and all that non sense'' quote😆

I remember the how the track listing on Simple Minds live in the city of light album played completely different from the set list on that tour. The album kicked off with Ghostdancing which was always about the 5th song in on this tour from 1986 . They always came on to 'Waterfront' which on the album is still a good few tracks away.

Nice video Dave and a really eclectic list, though I don't think there are too many crossovers with my 20 (done on 2 separate videos). That is, of course, apart from our total agreement on the number 1. I too was at that Supertramp gig in the City Hall. Look forward to your 78 - Cheers -Malcolm

Cheers Malcolm. The late-70s was an incredible time for pop and rock music. We had the best of both worlds - experience of the early-70s greats, and a foot in the New Wave. Happy times.

Good selection David. My own top 3 would be, Even in the quietest moments, farewell to kings, and skynyrds, street survivors. Also, I remember clover, with Huey Lewis, supporting skynyrd in the Glasgow Apollo in February 77.

Im not surprised by many of the albums mentioned, but I am surprised at the order. I think I have all the albums you mentioned except for Donna Summer. I was a fan of The Clash rather than the Sex Pistols back in 1977, and didn't buy Never Mind The B...... until a few years ago. I accept that the first three singles are iconic.

Again, here are the albums from this year that are included in my current top 500 all-time list, split between studio, live and compilation albums. 1 Television - Marquee Moon 2 Frankie Miller - Full House 3 Eddie & The Hot Rods - Life On The Line 4 Peter Gabriel - Peter Gabriel 1 (Car) 5 Supertramp - Even In The Quietest Moments 6 Pink Floyd - Animals 7 Sad Cafe - Fanx Ta-ra 8 Elvis Costello - My Aim Is True 9 Klaatu - Hope 10 Talking Heads - 77 11 Roy Harper - Bullinamingvase 12 John Martyn - One World 13 David Bowie - Low 14 Bob Marley - Exodus 15 The Motors - 1 16 Thin Lizzy - Bad Reputation 17 The Clash - The Clash UK 18 David Bowie - Heroes 19 The Vibrators - Pure Mania 20 The Stranglers - Rattus Norvegicus 1 Genesis - Seconds Out 2 Be Bop Deluxe - Live! In The Air Age 3 Jess Roden - Blowin' 4 Golden Earring - Live 5 Nils Lofgren - Night After Night 6 Status Quo - Quo Live! and last but not least 1 Roxy Music - Roxy Music Greatest Hits The top 3 studio, top 2 live and the Roxy compilation all make my current all-time top 100, with the comp coming ion as my favourite album released in the year at #11, with Marquee Moon #31. If I didn't split multi CD compilations into their individual discs in my records, then Decade by Neil Young would also be included. My plays for The Clash get split between the 1977 UK version and the 1979 American version which drops several tracks but includes White Man, Complete Control, Clash City Rockers etc, which is my all-time #63. That's the album I bought as a teenager because I loved those non-album singles so much. Combine plays and any version of The Clash debut album and it crashes into my all-time top 20, and above London Calling. I'm a bit surprised how low some of the other famous albums are from 1977, but a couple of more plays and they would be challenging hard to be included, so to some extent, the list shows that I haven't had a punk and new wave binge recently.

Enjoyable video and it made me realise I think of albums in terms of periods such as mid seventies For example I was listening to such things as Boz Scaggs 'Silk Degrees' and Southside Johnny and the Ashbury Dukes albums. My buddy brought round this new exciting album, 'My Aim is True', which was both startling and unnerving and at that moment required me to re-adjust my ears to the sound of the new wave.

I live in the US. British punk bands did not sell many records in the US or had much of an impact. Many British rock bands focused on the US and Japanese markets after 1977. Many musicians moved to the US. Prog survived, just not in the UK. I own quite a few of these records, I was also listening to a lot of jazz-fusion and ECM. I would have included Aja, Low, and Steve Winwood. Pacific Ocean Blue by Dennis Wilson and One World by John Martyn are records I like.

Thanks. I have all of those additional albums you have listed, and mentioned 'Steve Winwood' is my (thankfully shorter) follow-up video. I'm less complimentary about 'Aja' even though I've owned it (several copies, vinyl and CD) since then. And you're right about many of the top musicians of the 70s took their trade to the US (many prospered too). You must have been one of the few who tuned-into ECM back in the day. What a fantastic catalogue Manfred Eicher has curated. Since the 80s I've done my bit to keep the company in business!

'77 saw two classic Ramones albums - Leave Home and Rocket To Russia. How at least one of them didn't appear on your list beggars belief. Da Brudders hit Newcastle City Hall on 20th December 1977 to promote Rocket to Russia...they were back on 28th September 1978 and 29th January 1980. Did you miss them?

Back in January 77 John Peel revealed the album Low in its entirety late in the evening (the one you nearly forgot). For me that was the turning point for many Bowie fans. I'll never forget it. Should have put that at 19 instead of Heroes. Which was almost a copy of its predecessor. Just saying.

I really do like that period of Bowie's from STS through to Lodger, but much of the electronic experimentation was derivative, even though ground-breaking in the way he structured Low and Heroes. The title track of the latter always swings it for me over Low, sometimes to the extent that my brain-fart memory-holes the latter!

Good choices in The Stranglers and Jackson Browne. Eric Clapton’s tune “The Core”, is a humdinger of a track that nobody ever mentions. You must really dislike ELO “Out of the Blue”? And Yes’ “Relayer”, was from 1974.

I eventually correct my 'Relayer' error in the follow-up video. As for ELO, I like 'OOTB', but "A New World Record' was the last one I loved, and the earlier album highlights like 'Showdown' are longtime favourites.
