Even though I was young when I saw it for the first time this is a movie that stood out to me from it's release. The combination of skilled acting, cohesive direction and limited but effective effects really pulled it all together. It didn't hurt that I lived just a few miles from where it was set and mostly filmed which gave it an amazing sense of realism. It's worth noting how popular this film was with, basically, the people it was about. I worked at the local multiplex at the time, a highschooler, and this film lingered much longer than most while drawing a senior crowd I'd never seen the likes of... much less for a science fiction film.

At last, a review, and retrospective on the classic, film that taught about the wonders of life, acceptance of things we cannot change, and the possibilities of what could be. Can't wait to watch this "Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium" video... Wait... "Cocoon"? 😉

Thanks for this review, TUG; one of my absolute favourite movies which I first saw many years ago as a new release. Your analysis is spot on - what a great cast!. And Ron Howard, as a director, has gone from strength to strength. I completely agree with you about the late James Horner's soundtrack music being one of his very best, and I have it on LP from way back. He deserved an Oscar for Cocoon, and I am pleased that he eventually got one for Titanic. 😀

I saw part of this as a kid at nigth after bedtime. Ironically, appropriately, I sneaked up and tuned in when Jack is peaking at the alien. And then...she rips her skin off and start looking at the screen with those eyes. I freaked out, turned off and went to bed.

Thank you for helping me accept this movie. I hate the thought that I'm the same age as Brimley in this and it was nice to hear that they had to use make up to make him look like that! Whew. (And we both know why this movie hits you so hard--not sure I could watch it again.)

As a sci-fi geek, I'm a little surprised you missed this. u watched this as a young man and initially dismissed it as just another light-weight sci-fi-ish fantasy that were so common in the 80's....until the final scenes showing the saucer in flight in deep space. Ron Howard is the ONLY fillmaker to get that right. It gave the movie instant credibility, and I watched it a lot more closely when it next came on cable.

Recently saw cocoon for first time in decades and although I didn't like some aspects -talenless Steve guttenberg, dreadful welch none actors . Much of the older cast struck me as real. Guilford reaction to rose death. (Guilford another actor I not overly keen on ) But it's approach to death is the real thing in itself a rarity in popular USA cinema. When I first saw I was also at the young end of the scale now I'm much much older many of the issues that seemed so far away are scarily near. Great review

Horner's music was the only highlight of this film for me. Despite Horner's recycled motifs, it is a very enjoyable piece of work and stands up to repeat listening today. The Soundtrack was an essential purchase. The film... no thank you. To each their own. There are enough fans of Cocoon for it not to matter that I do not bother myself with Cocoon. No doubt someone will be offended by the fact that I do not enjoy the film. I have no idea why this happens, other than some inherited tribal attribute of our ancestors, perhaps.
