Indeed, Xanadu from the 1981 Live- Exit Stage Left is some of the finest visual representation of all thrre members multitasking. Geddy on the moog, vocals, bass guitar, and foot synth pedals. Alex on lead guitar and also playing foot pedal synths. Then there is Neil playing EVERYTHING in that caged monstrosity of a drumset. Lol :-D

Fun fact: that jarring staccato rhythm at the beginning is actually YYZ in Morse code. The story goes that Alex (he's a pilot) was flying them into Toronto airport after a recording session. Neil heard the YYZ Morse code from the airport transponder and really liked the rhythm of it. He(Neil) and Geddy ended up using it to create this bass and drum extravaganza while Alex wasn't around. When Alex gets back they're like - check out what we came up with! Now add a guitar part for it! 🤣 (No pressure, right?) For your own entertainment check out Freewill from this concert. When they do the instrumental break the entire crowd is doing the ' we're not worthy' bow ( ala Wayne and Garth). It's awesome!

I like to make the point that this song does have lyrics. The songs name is said several times over and over at the beginning. The fact that most people would not recognize the lyrics performed by the instruments in the form of Morse code, doesn't mean they are not there.
@stpnwlf9

I used to be an air traffic controller and my brain unavoidably absorbed a ton of 3-letter identifiers for US and Canadian airports. So when I first heard the song, I knew instantly the YYZ was the ident for Toronto's airport and the drum pattern at the beginning was obviously (to me) Morse code for YYZ -- I'm not a genius, it's just an occupational hazard that I knew instantly what was going on.

This song is generally, per Geddy Lee, about life on the road of a traveling band, YYZ is the airport designation of their local airport (Toronto Pearson International Airport, Ontario, CAN), and the blistering changes are the generally the excitement of leaving on a new tour, living on the tour, and the exhaustion of coming home to decompress after a long tour. The song literally speaks volumes, without one lyric (outside of Morse Code) involved. Brilliant. The crowd is yelling - Y - Y- Zed, to the tune.

Neil Peart: Best Drummer EVER!
@markstromberg1148
2 жыл бұрын
Sorry to piggyback an earlier comment (yet again), but two things occurred to me that I thought would be important for you to know. First, Neil Peart's drum kit changed - substantially - over time. If you want to see him using most of the percussion instruments in his kit when YYZ was recorded, check out the video performance of "Xanadu" from "Exit Stage Left" (1981). The kit had more drums and more percussion instruments, but did not have the electronic drums he later added and began to use (for the first time) when they performed "Witch Hunt" from "Moving Pictures." Second, Rush's best instrumental (IMHO) was "La Villa Strangiato" from "Hemispheres" (1978) - a musical masterpiece that showcases one of the best guitar solos of Alex Lifeson's many great guitar solos; I think you are probably now ready to review La Villa Strangiato.

Yup. Both Alex and Geddy play pedals for bass fills when Geddy is playing keys; they also use those for triggers. Neil uses triggers in his kit. The video documentary of the Rio show was really enlightening. Rain. Tech problems. They overcame and gave Brazil two wonderful shows. Okay ... don't know if you've tackled The Spirit of Radio. I'd suggest a studio version first, then live. Then, if you really want to see a visualization of Neil's playing, tackle this: kzitem.info/news/bejne/smaJvGpua3erZZg For a deeper live dive try Best intro Ever (I think this was the R30 intro): kzitem.info/news/bejne/uomK1X-Zm4mrZKA

These are the most serious musicians you are ever going to see on stage. Watch every live performance. You will never see them staggering around the stage because they are plowed. You will never see them high. You will never hear about them in-fighting. You will never hear how this one can't stand that one. Geddy and Eric have been friends since middle school. Their first drummer was a good drummer who liked to party and wouldn't show up for practice. Got plowed and forgot gigs. You can hear him on their first album, he was good. Their second drummer was Neil. And that was that. There were no fights about money, they split it equally. If you want to see Neil use every piece in that drum kit, watch his solo in Frankfurt. If you want to see him on his original drum kit that will make you die laughing, knowing what it developed into, watch an early concert video.

John forgot to mention the intro riff to this song is Morse Code identifier for YYZ. I remember reading the band heard the code on one of their flights back to Toronto and built the song around it. In regards to YYZ being nominated for a Grammy. The nomination was for YYZ, from Moving Pictures, I believe. Neil adds a drum solo on a live performance, which would be from Exit Stage Left. Also YYZ lost the best instrumental Grammy to "Behind My Camel" by The Police. What a joke.

In case you're wondering why they had clothes dryers on stage, here are a few possible reasons: after Geddy started plugging his bass guitar into the arena's sound system, they needed something to balance out the huge stack of amps on Alex's side of the stage; after all those years of performing alongside Alex's hijinks, Geddy wanted to have some fun of his own; they were responding to a music critic who had said that watching one of their shows was about as boring as doing his laundry; Geddy wanted his voice to have that fresh, clean sound. Okay now, enough talk; it's time for Xanadu, Exit Stage Left!! 🎤 🎹 🎸 🥁 🎸 🔥 🔥 🔥

They used to put band t-shirts in the dryers and toss them into the crowd at the end of the night. My favourite was when they had the rotisseries on stage, and someone would come out during the show and baste the chickens.
@LiteralistReactions
2 жыл бұрын
Doh, here... I saw both of the tours you mentioned. Dryers and Rotisserie. Hilarious. Fact is, as soon as the band went to in-ear monitors, the stacks of amps were nothing more than empty boxes for show and/or endorsement money. When Geddy didn't feel the money was that important, he allowed his sense of humor to rule the day. Just awesome. Note, most bands still have empty boxes on stage. They don't get jokes and aren't creative enough to come up with something original. Go back to YES' 9012Live Video, filmed in the early 80's. See any amps on stage? And that was almost 40 years ago. Granted, Jon hated IEM as the tech was in its infancy, so his monitors were below the grate of the stage floor.

The video cuts. The director chose to mirror the frenetic energy of the opening of YYZ and rarely holds a shot for a whole second before cutting again. The first time he does finally hold a shot long enough for your mind to "see" it is when he goes to the audience and takes a shot of a beauty. As the song progresses, the "cuts" settle down a bit, but this director clearly believed in short takes.

Rush songs are almost always better live. You've mostly been in their radio-friendly "Classic Rock" rut, as I call it. They were influenced and tried, almost too hard, to sound like other bands of the time. I say it wasn't until 1982 that they really broke free of that, and by 1984 they took off into their own sound. That's where the Rush fan base splits in two; one group is comfortable in that zone they shared with The Police, Genesis, Zeppelin, etc. and lost interest when they shifted, while the other group paid extra close attention and took a very fond interest in Rush finally sounding like a unique band. I'm the latter :) Red Sector A, Afterimage, Mystic Rhythms, Marathon, Mission, Time Stands Still, The Pass, Scars, Ghost of a Chance, Dreamline.... even the naysayers won't deny those are some freakin' amazing songs!

Doh, here... To some degree it depends one's perspective and when one starts listening. Clearly, RUSH were much more progressive prior to the 90's, and I'm a bigger fan of progressive music than straight rock, so, I prefer the early stuff and don't view it as RUSH trying to mimic any other band.

Geddy has a sets of pedals, literally organ pedals, that can either play bass when his hands are on the keyboards, or play synth notes when he's playing bass. YYZ being the airport code for Toronto, after a long tour, when they saw YYZ on their luggage tags and tickets, they knew they were finally going home. Neil's gear stands screw directly into the riser boards, rather than simply resting on stands with feet, with the exception of some of the large floor toms. He has, essentially, two kits: one mostly acoustic, and one mostly electronic (the one with the tiny kick drum is electronic). The drum riser rotates depending on which kit Neil wants to play facing the audience. Even his acoustic set has some triggers built into it, some in custom tom shells. Also featured prominently is a Mallet Kat MIDI marimba which, in addition to being an electronic marimba, can also be programmed to trigger any sound effect he wants. The kit also includes extra foot triggers adjacent to his bass and hi-hat pedals, as well as multiple strategically placed blowers to help keep his hands dry.
