Believe it or not adding your borders can help square up your quilt. It also prevents tucks and puckers and the dreaded 'wavy' border.
I'm adding the top border to my quilt top. The best, most accurate way of measuring and cutting borders is to measure your quilt through the left side, center and right side for side borders. After sewing on the side borders measure through the top, middle and bottom, average those numbers and cut the border to size.
For this quilt the measurements were: 62 1/2, 62 3/8, and 62 1/2. (they are not usually that close) Add those three numbers together equals 187 1/2. Now divide that by 3 (the number of measurements taken) and you get 62.5. I cut my borders 62 1/2.
Here is what I do:
I mark the center of the quilt side I'm adding the border to and the center of the border strip, match them and pin the center. Next I pin both ends of the border and quilt. Then I follow what I call the rule of halves.: I pin about halfway between the center of the quilt and one end. Then I pin halfway between the pin I placed and the center and pin. This makes it easier if I have to ease some border fabric in or slightly stretch border fabric to fit.
Long explanation.
The pins I'm using are from Taylor Seville and have a wonderful grip.
