Hey folks cool to see this video getting more attention right now! Obviously when I wrote this I didn’t know Boomhauer’s accent was based on a real person’s voice, and I hadn’t heard anyone with that dialect! I wish I could change that part of the video! If you like the rest of this analysis you should give some of my other KotH videos a watched, I’m really proud of the Hank/Bobby vid and the Luanne vid.

I feel like another really interesting take away from the Patch Boomhauer episode is that Jeff has a suprisingly strong respect for honoring commitment. When he sees his brother acting in the lead up to getting married similarly to how he does as a single man, he disparages him because "talkin bout' vows, man. Vows!" That adds an interesting context around his solidarity. He'd rather hop between relationships than be unfaithful to a committed partner, because commitment is something he takes seriously. Even if it doesn't always paint him in the best light, there is a weirdly kind of honorable nature to his bed-hopping when you frame it as a product of him not wanting to settle down unless he's sure the person is someone he can commit to. He also frequently shows a lot of mature restraint and respect around Luanne despite her being of-age and very attractive. Also to his credit, in that scene where he hits on every woman he sees, he actually can seem to take "no" and move on in stride. There's sort of an odd honor-code to his habits. Hes not just a horndog.

I'm fairly certain that his friends do indeed know about his job, it's just that Boomhauer probably treats his professional life and personal life as incredibly separate. @dancollins2568, Maybe it’s just about time that he just limited himself to Heimlich County only! Therefore, with Tammi Duvall for his wife, Boomhauer is bound to get an avalanche victory of votes over Mumford who’s been taking payoffs from Ted Wassanasong to keep letting narcotics filter through Heimlich County. So, when incumbent Sheriff Mumford tries to run Boomhauer into the morgue in a game of bumper tag, Boomhauer uses the 1967 Ford F250 he’s driving as he crosses one of the few remaining one lane bridges in Heimlich County to get Mumford where he wants him before the primary. No sooner has Mumford also crossed the bridge, Boomhauer takes his vehicle to the other side and runs out onto the bridge wielding his souvenir stick from the Buford Pusser Home & Museum. Mumford guns the regulation police interceptor engine of his 1993 Chevrolet Caprice cruiser and charges as Boomhauer ducks under the bridge for safety. Suddenly the Chevy leaps off the ledge and into the creek bed as the engine explodes in midair. However, it’s not deep enough in the creek as Boomhauer notices the deputy floating face down in the creek. Quickly, he pulls the deputy to safety, but he can’t help Mumford who’s trapped in the burning cruiser alive with almost less than a week before the primary election. Eventually, Boomhauer wins the election, and things work out just fine.

I like the episode Patch Boomhauer as a good character piece myself. I think the part that really speaks to Boomhauer’s true character is when Patch hits on Luann and he steps in to put a stop to that. He’s a serial dater, but he has limits and standards and any family of his best friend is off limits to anyone. Also, my favorite part of that episode is the very end where he asks Hank, in his own way, if Hank would be his best man someday and Hank replies “Boomhauer, I’d be honored.”

@@smozbie1074 No they don’t. Hank assumes they were because Boomhauer brought Luanne home when he had set her up on a date with another guy. Luanne only moves in with Boomhauer because she feels frustrated that Hank is badgering her despite him not being her father, which prompted Hank to play the landlord card. Boomhauer even objects to her moving in and is clearly frustrated with the situation between Hank and Luanne when he was setting up the couch for her to sleep as she is unpacking her thoughts about her fights with Hank to Boomhauer. He even assures Hank that he “ain’t no dang ol’ Woody Allen with that little ol’ Soon Yi, man. I say nothin’ happened”.

Funny thing is, if you have a good ear for accents and speech in general, you can understand pretty much everything he says. Like when the old football coach asks how his folks are doing, he tells him they're in Florida after winning the lottery, and are doing fine - no problems, to which the coach - not understanding a word and being a pessimist - says, "I'm sorry to hear that."

My theory about his job: It's not a secret, we (the viewers) just weren't shown it. Canonically, Hank, Bill, Dale, and everyone else all knew Boomhauer was a Ranger, but the job is just considered boring and mundane in-universe. Just like the FBI (and similar investigative LE agencies) is in real life. Most of the time, you're not kicking down doors, doing surveillance, or going undercover.... you're doing a *lot* of research and paperwork, and eventually... after months and months of casework, you finally get to do the thing we all see on NCIS and similar shows.

@@Johnny2Cellos it just wasn’t relevant. Like you said, there’s two episodes that focus on Boomhauer. His whole schtick is that you can’t understand a word he says. I wouldn’t be surprised if they didn’t even have an idea of what his occupation actually was until they were writing the last episode, which is all about tying up loose ends ie Hank and Bobby finally truly connecting Idk, I just don’t see it that way. Not that your interpretation is invalid, I just think that the show had a dedicated fan base and it was ending and they wanted to tie up loose ends.

@@dstinnettmusic I also don't believe that Boomhauer was _ever_ a Texas ranger, including in the series finale. I really think it was just a thing to tease the audience and an inside joke. The badge is a fake badge to pick up chicks, but the audience just thinks he's some cool undercover ranger. There's a lot of context clues to support this, such as him pulling the badge out with a piece of paper that has "call me" written on it in lipstick, and the fact that the zip code on the badge is for Oklahoma; not Texas.
@eurosomething
3 жыл бұрын
I agree, that is just how Texas rolls. Boomhauer’s job was never a secret to his neighbors and a huge part of why Hank worshipped his friend. Also why the shows shenanigans were never ending in jail time, boomhauer would have a word with his buddies and flash a badge and they’d move along. It’s just funnier that we couldn’t figure it out.
