4:10 You know that KOEI wasn't just some JRPG developer, right? They created THE most massive and intricate grand strategy games of the 8- and 16-bit era, titles like Romance Of The Three Kingdoms and Bandit Kings Of China. They were probably the only developers on the planet in the early 90s who'd be capable of properly porting Civ to console.

Truth be told, I only really know Koei as the now Koei Techmo so I didn't know much about the games the made before. But suddenly, how they pulled off this port so well really makes sense :P
@jasonblalock4429

What I'd honestly love to know is WHY they did the port. To my knowledge, KOEI of that time never did another port. I can only assume that they must have really liked Civilization, to spend time working with it rather than publishing more of their own games.

I remember trying the DOS version a long time ago and not being too fond of the graphics, lack of soundtrack and the anti-piracy "prove your royalty" nonsense. Saw your review a few months back about the SNES version and tried playing it. Instantly hooked. Beaten it on Earth mode in about a month. Now that I have more experience and feel like playing it again I decided to try to beating it on the default mode to see how different the traditional experience can be. I used to think the bomber's attack power is not worth the investment, but I can understand their utility now. The fact that bombers have twice as much sight range, huge movement range, ignore zone of control and can't be attacked by ground units makes them perfect for scouting to prevent my ground forces from being ambushed. Also, after doing an first strike assault with my tanks on enemy ground forces I can use the bombers to finish off any remaining enemy units in range getting ready to counter my tanks on the next turn, since attacking with a bomber is still more cost effective than defending with a tank. Another thing they're very efficient at is destroying ships with multiple units inside. Honestly, this game just get more and more fun every time I play it, so thank you for recommending this. I really appreciate it. JUNE 16 OF 2024 UPDATE: Finally managed to beat it on default mode and prince difficulty after having my spaceship reach Alpha Centauri in 2009 and buying the last city of the last enemy civilization in 2010. But you know what? I'm still not satisfied! I'll play it again to make an attempt at triggering global warming and beat all other civilization under those conditions. I love this game to death. It's at least the best 2D strategy game I ever played, I'll say that much. Really addicting.

Sounds like a great liitle Civ game on SNES there. Pretty cool that it actually got a port of this back in the day. And it seems like it was the only home console up to that time to receive a port as well, which makes it doubly impressive that it made into on SNES. :)

I appreciate that you did a whole review of Civilization on the SNES. I play that game sometimes and try to beat the game quick to the space as Japan or The Aztec if the spawn at the original earth map and mountains contain gold and diamonds at the swamp tiles for high research points. other countries could work if aggressive seeking location that offer high research points.

@@LEXXPortPatrol Fair enough. I definitely think it's worth a second look if you ever have the time. It's my favorite game in the series personally, and the way it integrates story with gameplay is without equal. The maps are big, but the total number of them is much smaller. Likewise the total unit count is pretty comparable to other FE games; they just frontload a lot of them.

As some others are saying, this was my first CIV game as well. I was renting it constantly from the video rental store. I already had the mouse and pad, so it was just natural. I went on to play it for many years on emulator with mouse and keyboard for many years, until one day, I was browsing the local FB marketplace. I saw the game for sale, along with the mouse, and pad, and I instantly messaged and bought it that day. I still play it using the emulator because I want to preserve the cart, and the mouse. But easily, one of my favorite games of all time!
