_Shadow of the Vampire_ contained one of the most memorable (for me) lines, from the obsessed fictional Murnau: "If it's not in frame, it doesn't exist!" The hybris of the obsessed director who thinks he is creating reality to the point where he disregards the real world as a mere irrelevant shadow.

The first and only time I managed to see _Shadow of the Vampire_ was in 2000 when I found the movie by random chance, as a university student, browsing the Scifi/Fantasy/Horror section of the local video rental shop. It's a brilliant movie, darkly hilarious in scenes and psychologically creepy in others. And it came at the tail end of the "vampire craze" of the 1990s with novels/movies like _Interview with a Vampire (1994), Blade, The Lost Boys, From Dusk Till Dawn, Near Dark_ and a remake of _Dracula_ and others, TV series like _Forever Knight,_ and (in the gamer scene) pen & paper roleplaying games like White Wolf's World of Darkness RPG universe with its _Vampire: The Masquerade_ sub-setting. IMO _Shadow of the Vampire_ should've been far more mainstream-compatible than, say, _Blade?_ It had big name stars, it was a clever "funhouse mirror" take on Murnau's the original _Nosferatu_ (which is quite well known, at least here in Germany). And yet _Blade_ starring Wesley Snipes made big money because it aimed at the Action movie viewer demographic instead of the Fantasy/Horror/Vampire genre audience. The 1994 version of Anne Rice's novel adaptation _Interview with a Vampire_ starred Tom Cruise and Bratt Pitt, kirsten Dunst and Antonio Banderas and was gorgeous to look at. So I guess _Shadow of the Vampire_ was just... too artsy to be brainless fun, too weird for mainstream audiences, or just didn't get any promotion? Or did it come too late, because the Virtual Reality Cyberpunk Scifi subgenre that had emerged in the mid-1990s alongside the early Internet broke into the mainstream in 1999 with _The Matrix_ and thus nobody was interested in vampires anymore?

The portrayals of Murnau and Shreck could have been drawn from the remake's director and star, Werner Herzog and Klaus Kinski. Kinski was infamously temperamental, Herzog is an eccentric, demanding perfectionist, and their relationship was...fraught, to say the least.
@trustno173
Жыл бұрын
I'd say Kinski was more than temperamental. When he arrived to do the film Creature aka Titan Find, he casually placed an arm around the director, William Malone, as if he were an old friend and casually confessed to raping his daughter, and then laughed at the shocked and horrified expression on Malone's face. Later, during a lunch break, Malone claims that Kinski had a teenage girl sitting in his lap and was shamelessly flirting with her, and when she left Malone asked where she came from and Kinski's reply was a creepy smile followed by "Well, you know...I like to hang around the school yards." And most infamously, his behavior on the set of the horror film Crawlspace, which had been rewritten at the studio's insistence so they could hire Kinski, was so awful and caused so many fights that director David Schmoeller actually came across the producer and some crew members plotting to murder Kinski. Kinski notoriously would do this with young, inexperienced directors who didn't have any power or influence in the industry, this is likely why he turned down the role of Major Toht in Raiders of the Lost Ark. While he claimed it was because the script was 'moronically shitty', it's more likely he knew powerful guys like Lucas and Spielberg wouldn't tolerate his madness.

This movie is a rare case where I felt it was too SHORT. Not as a serious flaw or anything, but the premise has such potential, there was so much going on in the film, they could have gone for a slow but epic escalation into the absurd; what we got felt like it was leaving a lot on the table. Only 92 minutes, there was room to do more, but they rushed to the third act, and rushed that to the climax.

@@akungoogle9631 Oh yes, I know of that. I'm excited to see a new version of this story with modern production values. But Shadow of the Vampire wasn't just the story, it was a fictionalized story-behind-the-story. I don't think anyone's going to take another crack at that, nor should they. This was a good enough movie, and very niche. Just a shame it felt incomplete, almost like they ran out of money or something.

I love how a movie mocking method acting despised method acting so much… the main villain isn’t even a method actor, to suggest that method acting is THAT bad that they prefer a real vampire over an intense method actor pretending to be a vampire. After the shit with Jared Leto, can’t blame em.

Wow, a greatly underrated movie. It looked like they inserted a few short scenes from Nosferatu. The ship board scene with rats and carrying coffins down a cobblestone street. Surprised to find that William Defoe played “The Count Orlof”. Edit: I think the flaw in the film is that it doesn’t tell us enough. When Orlof was drinking with part of the crew I wish he told us more about his past instead of “I can’t remember”. How frustrating! And the film did seem rushed. Good synopsis. Thank you.

If I have to describe this movie in one word I would say that it is: "pretentious!" Film about self-absorbed narcissistic artist who thought that horror flick they were making is some kind timeless masterpiece... as well as self-flagellation of filmmakers; "look how pretentious and self-absorbed we really are!" Also this film brake main rule of filmmaking; "show, don't tell" - by almost constant commentary of director, describing what is going on in movie he was making... The only thing I really like about this film is vampire as tragic, lonely character who have immortality but who payed to high of a price for that gift and he fell longing for simple things - he lost and things he cannot have such as love and even sunrise. If movie was just about this vampire it could be better. Cool idea for a film but so-so execution...
