I was onboard the Nimitz when the movie was made. I was a jet engine mechanic with VF-41 the Black Aces. I was assigned to the ships jet engine shop so I worked on the engines for both VF-41 and VF-84.

The Axis of Time Trilogy by John Birmingham takes this premise and expands on it by having a multinational fleet(American, British, Japanese and, I think, French) show up in the past and staying put. A interesting twist is that not all the ships showed up at the same time/place.

That's the Axis of Time trilogy, Weapons of Choice, Designated Targets and Final Impact. I Google weapons of fate figuring it may have been a regional thing but I only came up with a video game, a series of fantasy books, and a similar name for a Warhammer novel.

Compare this to Zipang, the Japanese book and animated version. The captain and crew of a JSDF Aegis cruiser go back in time to just after the battle of Midway. And they don't come back. They have to deal with being a part of the past, and changing it even through involuntary actions. It's a pretty good story with real character development and interesting twists.

There's the Axis of Time series by John Birmingham that follows a similar plot where a modern (2014 iirc) coalition fleet centered around the new super carrier the USS Hillary Clinton or Big Hill is sent back in time when a civilian science ship attached to the fleet blows up and sends them back in time. They are also stuck in the past and have to deal with issues, the fleet arrives the night before Midway right in the middle of the US fleet. Someone on the 1942 side sees a Japanese flag on a 2014 Japanese ship and all hell breaks loose. They do things like use historical knowledge to liberate internment camps, they track down Elvis as a child and give his family the rights to his future music as cultural items from the future are already making their way into 1942 culture, Hitler manages to get ahold of some 21st century technology etc. I wish the author would have kept the Japanese officer who assumed command of the 2014 Japanese ship alive, I think there was something interesting there. Oh, the captain of the Hill os of German heritage and catches some flack for that.

As well as co-creating the Cybermen (with Kit Pedlar), Pedlar and Gerry Davis were responsible for a brilliant and much admired BBC TV show called 'Doomwatch' the first sci-fi to tackle environmental issues. Kind of 'Day of the Triffids' if it were written by Greta Thunberg

There’s one thing that always pisses me off in relation to this movie. There is a scene in it where an A-7 is coming in for an emergency landing without a tail hook. They have to erected the crash barrier to save the plane. Siskel & Ebert tore the movie apart over this scene. How completely contrived it was and totally unrealistic. They went on a rant about it. But… the scene was real. While the production was filming aboard the Nimitz they had an actual aircraft emergency. So the movie crew turned and filmed it. It was a perfectly handled emergency. Everything was textbook and the pilots life was saved. Since nobody was hurt they asked for and received permission to put it in the movie. The scene was in truth the ships crew actually being the best in the world at what they do. And these two pompous arrogant media elitists called it fake and contrived.

Yep an age of patriotism with one in four homeless being vets, and the US military being most frequently depicted in Hollywood as the baddies. Like in the ATeam - who are being hunted by the military. And Rambo. And Alf. Military characters could be good IF they had broken with the military. In fact you'll be hard pressed to find positive depictions of the US military outside of small B movie productions.

Implying star war's empire is the us military. Come on chuck, those British accents by all the imperial officers, screams us military?
@starwarsnerd100
3 жыл бұрын
The British accents were because parts were filmed in Britain. The whole “imps are British and Rebels are American” thing wasn’t intentional. (Notice the stormtroopers don’t have British accents, and Leia had one talking to Tarkin).Lucas said the Ewoks were supposed to be Vietcong. So “the Empire is the US military” isn’t as outlandish as you might think.

This movie is one thing; pointless - nothing was achieved, nothing was changed in history! So, what was the point? In my country, Poland we have similar thing; www.1939.com.pl is first in trilogy of books about contingent of modern polish soldiers send back in time to stop German invasion of Poland in September 39. Sure, in long term they didn't succeed but at least reading about Polish Special Forces wiping the floor with Wehrmacht was more than cathartic...I thought that this will be the same thing for Americans, but I was sadly mistaken...Oh, well; at least dog was cute!
