Nice review, new to your content. I'm a huge fan of the brand. I still own my 1987 Cerwin-Vega! AT-15's, love them. Another individual said that it would be nice to see a modern D-9. That's how I feel about the AT series. And why all this hate on the red surrounds? I never got that. Nothing wrong with standing out, being different, and having your own look. Most people don't complain about Klipsch's copper drivers. Either way, nice to see a revival of the brand. Looking forward to more of your content. Subscribed, thank you.

For $269.99, I can't think of a better speaker at this price point. I was really impressed with their dynamic range, bass, and high frequency smoothness. Even the cabinet and crossover punches above it's weight for this price point. If I was a consumer and I had the choice between a $800 sound bar or a pair of these, I would chose the LA165 every time. They really are that good.

I spoke to Cerwin-Vega's VP of sales and at this time there is no plans to replace or upgrade the current SL and XLS series. I do agree that bringing out a heritage line that would include an updated D9 would probably be really good for the brand judging by the feedback I have received. The speaker market for these, ( around 250-300 dollars ) has become so good that Cerwin vega had to make something much better than it did years ago. With Elac, Kef, Klipsch, Q Acoustric, etc., all making something really great for $300 and under, the question is, has Cerwin Vega made it good enough to compete. The Elac UB5 is under $300 and went on sale for $200 just days ago. I don't know how a company like C.V., that use to use 6db crossovers and a ugly finish just years ago, can get their speakers in todays market without lots of KZitem / Media reviews. Good to see them trying again but I really think it's going to be a tough battle...

Cw sounds like crap, they play loud and hit hard but thats about it, their no detail in the music, and sound quality is not there, i prefer quality over quanity, i listen to both the xls and cls series even the ones with dual 15 inch woofers, they hit hard and play extreamly loud, but the sound is not refined, no hifi about it, my old b&w 683 s2 didin’t play as loud, but sound much better at levels they can play at, and currently sits with a pair of b&w 702 s2 i know this is far from a fair camparsion considering its price range difference, but outside of spl they eat the cw alive, i am not worried about bass because an Arendal 1723 1s subwoofer is have that covered, and that sub plays much desper than cw and more refined, the cw dosen’t go deep for it size, maybe trying to switch fronts to Arendal 1723 tower or tower s to have speakers that can play extreamly loud to without sacrificing to much of the sound quality or details,

The bucking magnets that you call it in its day had a metal cover over it to reframe from bothering television screen picture tubes. My Klipsch R-15M have that magnet on the drivers like those do. I’d be impressed if they made those baskets like the old 8/10/12/15 inch drivers , out of aluminum. The screws & nuts being steel isn’t gonna make any difference in sound if they was copper or aluminum etc where a magnet doesn’t stick. I still have my 1991 D-3 Vegas & they are perfect. Only had to replace the surrounds . I still own the boxes they was sold in. They was boxed 20 years. They aren’t made like those anymore.

Woofer vs. subwoofer frequency ranges The frequency range for a woofer is typically between 50 Hz and 2,000 Hz, while subwoofers will usually go as low as 20 Hz or even lower than that and only go up to 200 Hz. The LA165 has a woofer, that is why I am referring to it as such. Hope this helps. descriptive.audio/woofer-vs-subwoofer/

I have a pair of these in cognac finish for about 2 weeks now and have been looking for reviews...so thank you lol. Great review. I agree with you on the quality of these Cerwins. I never really liked the looks of the SL series but these caught my eye, so I took a chance on them and I'm glad I did, I love these speakers. I use an Aiyima tube preamp/dac into a vintage Kenwood amp with two OSD Trevoce 8 subs and I am in hard rock heaven. These things love to be played loud. I turned off the subs for a few sessions and bass is present at lower volumes but really comes alive when giving them the beans. But, agreed, pair them with a sub or two for best results.

@@generationbehindhifiit’s probably just made in the same factory. Wharfdale also makes one with a similar cabinet. Keep in mind there is only so many factories that make speakers and by having brand crossovers this helps keep the cost down. I’m willing to bet the CerwinVega! Has a better power handling tweeter with higher sensitivity. But just a guess

Hello! Like I said in the video I think the bucking magnets are being used to increase the speaker's sensitivity as well as lowering the Q-factor (speaker Q). That's just me speculating though.

Actually it's quite helpful if you know what to listen for. "The knuckle test, unlike tire kicking (performed at various locations around the cabinet panels), can certainly tell you if the box is rigid from the pitch of the sounds it makes when knocked." The knock test is absolutely a good test. Especially on larger speaker a more inert cabinet makes for a cleaner sound especially in the low end. Bracing and damping makes for a tighter bass, and can help allow the music to play louder before distortion

In a blind listening test, no-one is EVER going to hear an improvement from using non-ferromagnetic terminals. Is it really worth the effort?
@generationbehindhifi
9 ай бұрын
Perhaps, but speakers are the sum of their parts are they not? Every little detail matters to maximize sound quality. To use ferromagnetic parts vs steel is maybe a dollar more at best, especially at the volume these manufactures are buying them at. My question to you is if it didn't matter, then why do all the high end manufactures use non-ferromagnetic parts in their designs? This includes Bowers & Wilkins, KEF, and Sonus Faber. I'll tell you why, because they are trying to squeeze every small performance gain they can to distance themselves from the rest. As an audiophile, everyone should be thinking this way. IEEE did a white paper on ferromagnetic parts in audio connectors and its a good read. Basically the study proved that ferromagnetic parts introduce passive intermodulation, aka 3rd-order harmonics distortion to the signal! Simply put, there's a reason why high end speakers use non ferromagnetic parts in the signal path. Paper can be read here: ieeexplore.ieee.org/ielaam/22/8681220/8632973-aam.pdf

@@turbomustang84 In my opinion the red surrounds are a must for their big enclosure "party speakers"!!! But if they really want to capture the audiophile crowd, then they really need to lose the red surrounds for their small format "audiophile" grade speakers. Even my wife said "Too bad about the red surrounds, those will clash with a lot of peoples decor" and I think she is right. No matter how nice the cabinet is, it's going to be extremely hard to convince your significant other that these speakers with bright red surrounds will look good in the living room.
