A lot of / Lots of
First of all let’s understand the use of ‘a lot of’ and ‘lots of’. Both these words carry the same meaning. So, they can be replaced by one another. ‘A lot of’ or ‘lots of’ means ‘too much’. The most important thing is that it can be used for countable as well as uncountable noun. It means both the words can replace ‘much’ as well as ‘many’. Both the words are adjectives.
Examples
For countable noun in place of many:
I have a lot of friends. = I have lots of friends.
He saw a lot of boys. = He saw lots of boys.
My father gave me a lot of pencils. = My father gave me lots of pencils.
She memorizes a lot of words everyday. = She memorizes lots of words everyday.
For uncountable noun in place of much:
I have a lot of money. = I have lots of money.
She drank a lot of water. = She drank lots of water.
He paid a lot of attention. = He paid lots of attention.
My mother gave me a lot of advice. = My mother gave me lots of advice.
A lot
‘A lot’ is used as an adverb. It means very much. This is the opposite word of ‘a little’.
Examples
He ate a lot last night.
She loves you a lot.
I like cricket a lot.
‘A lot’ also means ‘again and again’.
Examples:
I used to go there a lot.
I come to this place a lot.
I meet my friends a lot.
