I took it as the lawyer knowing that Columbo suspect him and bringing out how he would explain in court that the gun stayed in the victim grasp for a long enough time to explain the dried blood, and there are other possible explanations he could use, making it a useless evidence.

I love watching these over and over to catch little nuances. E.g., Columbo says "The information you just gave me is priceless" and Patrick's facial reaction shows he's both flattered and scared. These two actors are just so good together!

2:05 - Columbo "How does that look to you sir?" was his attempt to see if Finch would say "about right" and then Columbo could follow up by asking how would he know it is right? Finch being a superb lawyer who knows all the word tricks of the police didn't fall for it and answered "You saw it".

Oscar Finch should have told Columbo that he normally charges $1,200 an hour for his advice and for consultations. Which reminds me of a classic joke. A man approaches an attorney and tells him, "I hear that you're a brilliant attorney, and I was wondering: How much do you charge for your services?" The lawyer responds, "I charge $1,200 to answer three questions." The man then says, "Wow, that's a lot of money just to answer three questions, don't you think?" The lawyer says, "Yes, it is. And what is your third question?"

So you believe that witnesses to a crime should never talk to the police while the police are simply investigating? The events in this clip were not a police interrogation, and the individual was not a suspect, and had not been read his rights. At this point, using his right to be silent would be more suspicious than anything else. Columbo couldn't use anything he says against him in a court of law.

@@ctmdarkonestm A good lawyer would NEVER tell you to NOT talk to the police if your motive is to report a crime. They would ALWAYS tell you to use your right to be silent if you are being interrogated and have been read your rights. But there are lots of situations when you CAN talk to the police. Furthermore, this only applies in certain countries (like the US and Canada) whereas in other countries (like the UK) if you are silent when the police ask you questions your silence CAN be used against you in a court of law. And that's clear the way the UK police read you your rights: "You do not have to say anything. But, it may harm your defence if you do not mention when questioned something which you later rely on in court. Anything you do say may be given in evidence."

Well that wouldn’t make for a very good show if everyone was not cooperative in speaking with the detective Colombo, but for sure it would seem that if you were being questioned in suspicion of murder, you should not say a fucking word until you seek legal advice. The fact that this guy had such a crazy explanation at the ready is one of the shittiest things I’ve ever seen on the show. So I’m not a doctor, I’m a lawyer but I know all about a specific type of arthritis and I also know after only speaking with this person on the phone once nine months ago and then once again just to deny him legal counsel that he has this specific type of arthritis and it’s the first thing that came to mind as soon as I was asked why or how dry blood could be under the gun. I mean you have to be kidding me with that fucking explanation. And how fast it was.can’t be

It helped that Patrick McGoohan and Peter Falk were best friends for many years, indeed McGoohan was first pick for the role of Columbo but turned it down, recommending Peter Falk instead, as he felt Peter would act the character better than he could.

In Columbo goes to college, he actually mentions how he caught the perp with a bite mark in some cheese, to the class. I know these episodes inside out and back to front, but never get tired watching them. there is something comforting about them. No need for bad language or violence just a great script direction and fine acting.

At the end of this clip, the suspect pulls out a stick of gum and chews on it. And to top it off Columbo turns to see him do that. This clearly means that the gum will play a pivotal role in the suspect's capture. Because in any normal TV show nobody chews gum. So the gum is important.

@@PhazonOmega I've seen a few Columbo episodes, so the explanation is usually tricky to anticipate. So it won't be something as obvious as DNA or fingerprints on the gum. We already know he's the killer (that's how Columbo scripts work.) After thinking for 2 minutes, I am now speculating that is has more to do with the gum's wrapper rather than the gum itself. Maybe the wrapper could have fingerprints and was left at the crime scene. That's too simple for a Columbo plot, but that's all I have right now.

I'm guessing that a wrapper was found at the scene of the crime, and it either had fingerprints on it, or the brand of the wrapper was identifiable. EDIT: I see my first reply now. I can second that. I once shot one of my friends in the back with an 4.5 mm air rifle. We were a bunch of 13-14 years old, out shooting in the guns. When we broke up and went for home, someone had left the gun loaded and armed laying on the ground. (This sounds a lot worse than it actually turned out to be. All "my target" suffered, was a blue spot on his back.

He not only conveys that he hates Columbo for being a good detective and poking holes in the suicide plot, but also that he hates himself for allowing himself to get fooled by Columbo's bumbling appearance.

Don't feel bad for Oscar Finch. He hired another lawyer, Hugh Creighton (Dabney Coleman), who never lost a case, and who successfully won Oscar an acquittal. Although Oscar was disbarred, Paul Mackey (Denis Arndt) and his good friend Oscar went on to become successful lobbyists for the pharmaceutical industry where they made millions of dollars working only two days every other week, commuting from their mansions in Beverly Hills to Washington, DC.

This is one thing I dislike about Columbo -- the gratuitous recasting the same actors as villains enough to notice. I loved McGoohan as King Edward I Longshanks, though!

Columbo in this episode has a way more noticable smoker voice than usual, it's actually kind of distracting.
