@@zoebidule3397 That’s a reasonable point, Zoe. I have found myself infatuated with an artist or composer who’s new to me, only to find my devotion waning as my taste matures, and then waxes again for some brighter star (by the new assessments), rising in a more select sky. Sharing a common scale by which arts or humanities are measured is more elusive than consensus enthusiasm in the sciences, which require objective detachment, period. Anyone who cheers a Malofeev over a Lang Lang is asserting their subjectivity, while no serious scientists would argue that pandas are more important to rescue from extinction than the Monarch butterfly, or that dolphins share more empathy with humans than do elephants. Sentimental preferences like those would be obstructive in astronomy or zoology, but are irreplaceable in Goya or Brahms, and are indispensable in architecture, or sociology. And yet, Alexander clearly sounds as disciplined in classical pianism as if he were a scientist, and is possessed of dexterity and physical comportment that could describe an Olympic gymnast-one who perhaps trains in a new style called choreographed geometry! In fact his playing sounds like he studied topography, calculus and chaos theory as well as music theory, harmony and counterpoint. I have a hunch that he’s the product of obsessive parents and the martial rigor of Russian educational culture. But really, only a sweet kid with a tender heart could master the works he’s tackled. It helps that he’s an authentic prodigy, blessed with sandy-haired, sullen-jawed, Slavic charisma.
