To all the ❄️❄️❄️ out there: this wasn't filler or forced. Malcom was another reason for Otto to keep living. With the time he had left, Otto housed, taught, and cared for the child he never had

And as extra defence, this was not added filler for the movie. It was in the book, which was published about 10 years ago.

There was a comparison I read, some years back, of the difference between West Coast people and East Coast people. West Coasters wished you well, were polite, sent well wishes, were nice to strangers. But East Coasters were brisk, sometimes rude, impatient, but would stop to help you change a tire while fussing at you for not knowing how or being a AAA member. Otto is the poster child for being what the article referred to as East Coast.

It's the same in Sweden, where this story originally comes from, but the geography is switched. People on the East Coast are polite and "correct", while people on the West Coast are rude and behave boorish but are genuinely helpful.

My only question is.. did he have to be trans if he was already written as a gay character. Seems like it took a lot away from the original.

It is a modern version of the story they do that though out the film to make it better set in today's world.
