I've seen them chase and they are fast. Was staying at a campsite in southern florida. Asked the man at admission gate if it was safe for tents overnight. He said it was even though there were canals. Thank God we had 2 tents, one for sleeping and one for cooler and camping gear. (There was no open food). In the middle of the night we heard a thrashing noice and a gator was attacking the tent with the cooler and camping gear. Crap it could have been our tent. The next morning we went down to the canal about 100 ft away from our site. All of a sudden a gator started chasing us. I got on top a picnic table. The gator chased after my friend up a palm tree. Thank goodness my friend got to just under the ponds of the palm tree. The gator got pretty close but feel off. Note that this camping ground was just for tents, no RV's. Needless to say we never went back there. Scared the hell out of both of us.

I'm in the middle of a busy tourist area ... Alligators, Coyotes, Wild hogs ... They closed down the Magic Kingdom because a bear wandered in ... I’m like 90% certain the Gator thought he has a fish on his line. It’s pretty common for gators to run out of the water like that to try and grab the fish before the fisherman reels it in all the way. Only other reason a gator would charge a human on land like that is to defend a nest.

We have a house on a fishing lake in Florida. Let me tell you we see lots of Gators, mostly at night. You can see their eyes just above the water looking at you. Lots of young ones near our property. We have a huge bulkhead separateing the water from the land. We know that if they want on land they can climb over it. We are all fairly close to water throughout FL.
