+gaz88 That wasn't the problem. The problem was he wasn't used properly. When Adam came into to it he seemed like he was going to be a straight, normal character. However, they added layers to his personality and made him into something special. Mark was there for the second best season of the show (IMO) and he could have been special with a proper path.

I still have the last episode of season 2 in my phone. That blueprint he gave to Leslie and Leslie's red tape going away present for Mark scene was one of the emotional and heartwarming episodes for me. The start of new beginnings. The show pivoted into a new direction after this scene.

Honestly, he was my favourite character from the show. And the first two seasons were the best. Regular guys like Mark are what we get to see around us. And alongside him a nonchalant hardcore Republican, a delusional democrat, a hapless common citizen, a corrupt govt official and a douche bag bf. That was the perfect recipe for a political satire. But no, realistic and dark comedy is too intellectual for the regular crowd. It has to be nerfed down for commerical reasons, for people are too scared of looking into a mirror. Instead of focusing on the political content, make it a show about relationships, dating and friendship like every other bloody show and clowns will start clapping. Ugh!

Hah, what a useless character he became. And having him "involved" with Leslie in the past was a huge failure that I'm glad was never revisited. They definitely gave him the appropriate send-off, which, compared with Ann and Chris's sendoff, was downright pathetic. And while we're talking about useless characters -- I don't think the show every knew quite what to do with Ann either.

I always liked Mark. It's evident that Schneider felt there was nothing interesting for him to do in the show. Then Ben was introduced who was insufferable and boring for a long time, until they turned him into a nerd much later. They could've given all of Ben's story lines to Mark. Schneider made the right choice to leave, but I still think they could have treated him better.

@zimzimzalabim

@@anushkagupta8799 Both were boring, thanks to the poor writing. Both played "straight man" opposite to the rest of the cast, which was redundant. The writers never fully developed Mark, that has nothing to do with the actor. What personality did Ben have when he arrived? None at all, he was Chris's sidekick and that was it. He was not a nerd from the start, that was something the writers came up with much later in S4, after he started dating Leslie, as well as to establish some connection to blend in with the rest of the cast. His nerd traits (GoT, calzones, board games, Star Wars and 90s alt music) are so bland and basic that they could've been written into Mark's stories, without ever having to introduce another character. Adam Scott is a good actor but Ben was the weakest link of the show in every season he was in.

@@zimzimzalabim I guess judging who is "boring" is subjective but in my subjective opinion, Ben was one of the most interesting characters, with a backstory, with insecurities and also unique personality traits. But I do understand that opinions are subjective so who's to say. One thing though- you say that Ben's traits could have been written into Mark. The show didn't do that, that's the point. Regardless of whether some people would find them bland, there wasn't even an attempt of any personality with Mark. Which is why I would still say Ben is better written than Mark
