Maugham was so wise. Friendship, laughter, patience, no unrealistic expectations, those are the solids foundations of a good marriage.

Maugham writing in the first-person, putting himself in the shoes of a man looking for a wife, is amusing because he wasn't even in the closet. He was openly gay and that's why he never married - and partly why he lived so much of his life abroad.

@@dontaylor7315 you are partially right, Maugham was a homosexual. But he got married to Syrie Wellcome in 1917 and they had a daughter, Lisa. Their marriage lasted for 12 years and during most of these years the couple lived apart and Maugham had a male companion.

Tealky loved this story! Thank you again for such a lovely tale of a successful marriage. It could easily be close to reality. The beautiful description of the folk sitting on the deck on a starlit night with the Italian belting out his songs was perfect! I didn't even have to close my eyes to imagine the stars/ the waves below the ship/almost listening to the singing being sat on deck with that lot! Maugham forgot to mention the flying fish, the shiny diatoms that shine like stars on water to match the sky

Perfect for our times. What is a woman? A song filters through my head…Dean Martin singing “ You’re nobody til somebody loves you.” Maugham’s way with words had me smiling and laughing out loud.

I loved this story, but it does belong to another age, when marriage was for many reasons more necessary for both partners. And I totally agree with the comment that the practical attitude shown is straight out of "Pride and Prejudice" (although nothing on earth would persuade most women to marry Mr. Collins from that book). I think it's one of Maugham's "observations of other people's relationships" stories, given that he always wrote as an outsider, for many reasons.

I am French so understood all the bits in my language. Very amusing and an interesting theory. However I wonder : the author seems obsessed by the weight of his characters.

I don’t believe he means overweight in the flesh, or do you? Did he mean Mr Maugham writes heavy on the characters and the plot is usually subtly between the heavy characters.
