Anthropologist Prof. Thomas A Reuter travels to Central Java, Indonesia for an encounter with Maharishi Pamungkas, a Javanese mystic and spiritual teacher he has met several times over the course of eleven years. Although Maharishi Pamungkas has gradually revealed portions of his complex system of spiritual teachings and practices to Prof Reuter, he has declined permission to publish his teachings, or even to have his photo taken, until now. What has changed? According to Maharishi Pamungkas, after a lifetime of spiritual teaching and practice in Java, the time has come at last that people everywhere are ready to benefit from authentic teachings in preparation for the coming stage of global, human evolution.
Maharishi Pamungkas is known to spend most of his time absorbed in meditation and fasting in Java's mountain forests or living simply in a village setting without material possessions. In this film we meet him during a brief sojourn at the home of one of his friends in Yogyakarta in Central Java, and spend an afternoon with him as he expounds on camera his core teaching for living a spiritually meaningful life and achieving perfection of body and soul.
Maharishi Pamungkas expounds his method for attaining perfection of body and soul in terms of awakening the 'seventh level' - terminology redolent of Indian kundalini yoga - and reaching the 'Omega' or ultimate state of being. He describes this system as 'an exact science based on natural law'. Attaining this 'Omega' state is comparable to splitting an atom, transforming matter into energy. Until now, he explains, everywhere on earth humanity is overwhelmingly oriented towards materialism and the pursuit of temporal, worldly power, but we are reaching a threshold of transformative change.
Without prejudice or favour, this film aims to provide insight into an ancient but little known Javanese spiritual tradition.
