**APOLOGIES FOR POOR SOUND QUALITY - I recorded a few videos with bad sound settings which I have now corrected for future videos!!
There is a big belief out there that 'belting' is purely chest voice. I have also come across some that believe a 'belter' to be a voice type.. Well both of these are untrue! A good belt (i.e. a strong tone in a higher register) requires the perfect mix of head and chest resonance. And there is no one-size-fits-all because the mix changes from person to person as it does from song to song. Because singing is a lot like baking (hang in there with me!) - there are many chocolate cakes in the world and after that there are many different ways to make them. Likewise there are many different 'belty' songs out there and again different ways to sing them. Is belting a bit shouty? No, but it can be overdone. You need to put some style to your shout!
In this video we start as always by grounding ourselves and finding our breath, breathing in, holding and exhaling our breath then work our muscles with a few cheeky choo choo train sounds. Our SOVT (semi occluded vocal tract) exercise is some lovely lovely lip bubble arpeggios repeated three times. After that we do some interval slides to a NEE vowel accessing that lovely nasal resonance before getting some strong chest to our mix with a HEY vowel to five note scales. Our final exercise is some octave slides (some high octave slides...) to a NAH vowel. Time to power up your voice!
New videos come every week so let me know in the comments what you'd like to hear about (Technique? Song breakdowns? Singer analysis?) We're a democracy at MusicForMy... so you get to chose!
