Hi. We made millions out of nowhere on our Dark Souls Kickstarter and decided to swap our business model over to IP board games with extravagant models to the detriment of our flagship game. When due to our change of focus we failed to deliver for over a year on Guild Ball releases and presented low quality goods and service we decided to cancel it. Now years later as the Guild Ball Community has started to pick up again with the fan based rules and models we decided to cash in with print on demand models to minimize overhead and maximize profits with almost zero effort on our part. We love you, the game we abandoned, and we're sorry. Please give us free money.

You abandoned the community that helped build your company and boost Guild Ball into a status rivaled only by Warhammer in the miniature gaming space. You squandered that to pursue a never-ending bombardment of mediocre board games based on video game IPs to make a quick buck on Kickstarter. One could easily forgive you for ignoring Guild Ball to pursue other financial opportunities but instead of telling us the truth, you blamed us for your failure. This is the funniest video I've ever watched. I can't tell if this is some sort of apology video or if I'm about to be sold another crappy product. If your intent was to apologize for your behavior, maybe the format of the video shouldn't have been two guys talking in a room as if the viewer doesn't exist and rather address us directly. This will likely get our KZitem channel blackballed by your company from receiving games in the future but I don't care: I hope the relaunch of Guild Ball fails miserably and that the fans of the original game continue playing the wonderfully supported fan-made updates that continue to come out.

Learn to take responsibility and admit that you were in fact wrong not just for what you said but also for how you chose to say it and then make a point not to act this way going forward with your customers. That would be the true apology, not one in which you blame it on something that was happening to everyone.

Video feels incredibly disingenuous when SFG is presently struggling with the exact same lack of communication and follow though with their other games. I got hooked on Godtear, which has some of the best game design I've been able to find, when there were frequent releases, web content, beta scenarios, and SFG staff were active in the community Discord. However, SFG abruptly went radio silent on Godtear 8+ months ago. With SFG showing a clear pattern of abandonment and disregard for the community, it is going to take more than an uncandid video to convince me not to actively dissuade friends from investing in their games (and that says a lot considering how much I REALLY enjoy playing them).

As someone who supported the game wholeheartedly, to the point I was playing every day, purchased the entirety of the game bar a few models, and was a pundit/tournament organizer for years, the cancellation hurt. You’re correct, the statement delivered felt like blaming the players. And worse still, it hurt the pundits especially. We were given no heads up, no warning, we were as surprised and shocked as everyone else. Suddenly, the game we’d hyped up, that we’d gotten people interested in (potentially even right before the announcement of production being stopped) was gone. It felt as if the flagship game was thrown away in favor of Godtear and the IP tie ins. And for people like me, who had spent a substantial amount of money on the game, I didn’t want to have to purchase an entirely new game. --- With all that said, I still love this game. I still love this community. I made some of my best friends playing this game. And the potential that even some people may show a renewed interest in it is an exciting prospect. And finally hearing an apology is….nice? But I wish it had come sooner. Choosing to stay silent on the issue for 3 years definitely burnt bridges that I’m not sure can ever fully be repaired. I hope they can, but I’m not holding my breath.

This video was a bit rambly so I may have lost attention at a critical point, but as far as I can tell the information in this video is only: 1) Our message wasn't what we meant to say 2) We should have corrected it sooner 3) We still think stopping Guildball was the right solution 4) The minis will be available for Print on Demand 5) We're going to work with the Guildball Community Project to incorporate their work in the rules And that was it, that was all the info in the video? Which is fine, but you handled it poorly. You DID blame the community. Despite years passing, we haven't forgotten. This wasn't an apology. You aren't looking in the camera, nor do you actually claim to be sorry. You did make a mistake, and you made another by trying to lie now and say you didn't blame the community for the game being cancelled. Forgiveness is given when there is actual change, but you haven't. You're still the same individuals that ended things and blamed everyone else. You won't take responsibility for your actions. You're here now, looking to cash in on the fact that the community YOU scorned is continuing where you left off, without you're input. You're seeing dollar signs. Blaming the community, whether intentional or not, was painful to read as someone who cheered for Steamforged and excitedly helped build that community. That said, I don't have it in me to hold grudges. The most fun I've had with some of my locals this year was digging out a few Guild Ball teams and having a couple matches. I'm not sure how many ways you were expecting people to take this. You flat out blamed the community for the game that you made. "We set out to make the cleanest, most balanced miniatures game you could play at that time. And we achieved this hands down, flat out, nailed it! Guild Ball truly was a competitive player’s dream. It rewarded player skill and experience, with a very flat probability curve to minimize variance. The competitive scene grew and grew. But this ended up hurting the lifespan of the game. Guild Ball became the type of game where you win your first game (demo) and then lose the next 100 games. When matched against a lesser skilled or inexperienced opponent, a better player would simply win the vast majority of games. As the competitive scene began to dominate, the design space for wilder, more ‘fun’ elements began to shrink. New minis were either ‘OP’ or ‘trash-tier’ the second they were announced. Why take a new model when model XYZ already filled the role? The style of gameplay changed to low-risk, ultra-conservative play where the ball was often deliberately side-lined. This wasn’t the Guild Ball we envisaged."
@Ironhawx
8 ай бұрын
This phenomenon is common in any kind of organized play. Competition will dominate the space and drive sales as players hunt for the best combos. If left unchecked the environment can become toxic to nurture newcomers. Keyforge tried a unique approach by inviting players with their worst decks and chaining to temper the “best decks”…price point also matters, a Keyforge deck was $15CAD whereas a Guildball expansion could be upwards of $100CAD

As gutting as it was to have one of the best games removed....I think I speak for the majority who can say we would be incredibly hyped and happy to have GB back. For me personally, this was the ONLY game I have tried where the community was as good as the gameplay. I tried Xwing, was put off by meta-gamers who were rude and frankly unwelcoming. Same with Warhammer, same with other tabletops. GB was the only game that made me excited to take part in "competitive" gaming because the community were welcoming and the fun/whacky/weird elements to the game worked well to keep it that way. Forgiven, forgotten. *grabs wallet* Take literally all of my money and release these again. Welcome back!

First I want to thank you for put out this video. Many people, like me, loved Guild Ball. With the way it ended there is going to be negative feedback regardless of how you present it. Things that I would love to hear during the live stream tomorrow: What were the struggles/pressures that lead you to the decision you made. What can we expect as a community with regards to the quantity, quality and transparency of the communications going forward. Many people felt burned with how the season transition was going and the way their feedback was being received and even more so when the game abruptly ended. What assurances would you give to the players to assuage their concerns about a repeat further down the line?

That was the worst apology I’ve ever heard. You never apologised to the community and to the people that promoted and built up the game. This was just two blokes having a chat over a cup of tea. You should have been talking to the camera and to the people that watch the video, not to each other. There was no apology.

It’s a great game, welcome to the community! Try to ignore all the kids whining in this thread. The company certainly made a blunder in the way they announced the pause in support, but it happens. No company is perfect. I’m sure they had a decent commercial reason for not supporting it. They apologised and are kicking it all back off again which can only be a good thing. Onwards and upwards!

I wish I did your lads PR - great opportunity here for a well constructed apology and to build excitement + new vision. First part just needed a to camera apology, second needed you to own fact this initiative is pretty cool and pioneering

Meh. The game was ok. Some cool miniatures that I used for other things. In subsequent years, plenty of good games and plenty of good miniatures. If they add something to the current market, good on them.

Guys guys guys.... You forked it up already. Barring some ultimate miracle, you cannot fix this. And this is the totally wrong way. You just cannot make a completitive game and then stop making it blaming it on the competitive players. Losing your face wasn't the right call! As a former FLGS-owner and someone who still plays GB, I am ashamed of you.

Oh no, they easily *could* have fixed this, they just haven't yet. When they shut down they *could* have just dropped all the STLs for everything, and said honestly "Y'all, we are making far more money doing Monopoly level milking of random video games we never played. We are taking a break from Guild Ball to focus on that and until we come back everything is here free, including those captains we barely printed any of. Enjoy!" But they chose to wait literal years of doing nothing after blaming the players. And now they are planning on charging who knows what, but I bet it's minimum 3 bucks a model. Expecting the people they abandoned to just crack open their wallets when they didn't actually say they were sorry for abandoning us to make, again, mediocre video game ports.

I just want to play Guildball again, love the game setting, the system, and the player community! Ran several events, Bourbon Trail was my main event, and really endorsed the game locally, and in a lot of neighboring states. Hope it can come back, I am very excited to have a chance to get into the game once again.

I never forgave GW for killing Warhammer. If Steamforged thinks they will be forgiven for what they did to Guild Ball they're nuts. They were too lazy and selfish to even finish what they had promised. Didn't release the STLs for people. No, just focus on shelling out as much crappy video game IPs as possible while blaming players. They *could* have concluded the game properly and never did. And they know this.

I have wanted to play guild Ball for years and finally printed my own paper copy last month - I will very excitedly print my own minis and I love that you've revisited the minis and doing quality update. I'd also be very excited to see any new content you can release and I love that you're respecting and including the community rules updates. Does this mean official lamplighters minis?

Since the models are print-on-demand, why can't they be sold as individuals? Or smaller groups to make them more accessible? Or benches for the minor/major teams to fill in those crossover players?

Sorry, but I'm not buying into the game again. I don't trust that SFG won't kill it off unceremoniously again, let alone if the company survives another year. Best of luck, but I don't plan on coming back.

Just sell the IP, you need to make money desperately and this is the only way you MAY achieve that. SFG has lost all trust in the community to ever have any kind of resurgence.

FINALLY! I suggested you guys made STLs available back when you announced the news... OK the market has increased considerably but why would you not want a way to make easy cash off existing assets?! Looking forward to the Falconers and Shepherd's Guilds - they were all out-of-stock back in 2020, and that set of the Falconers I did manage to pick up had a failure on the one figure I liked the most... I hope other companies follow suit making old assets available.

Oh, this sucks - it's not all STLs, it's 40£ print on demand sets for the specialised teams... get your first taste free, then shell out the big bucks for stuff you can't then print out to have different liveries or digital kitbashes of. Any chance of STL versions of the other teams? Not cool once more.

Name a game that Streamforged have made that they haven't bungled. It's better for them to make a game that the license will sell, rather than a game that the game will sell.

I've not played a game of Guild Ball since it was dropped, despite the community picking it up and continuing to support it. I personally lose enthusiasm for a game if the manufacturer is no longer behind it. If you officially brought it back I'd totally dive back in. As I'm sure many others would.
