This month, Dean Kevin J. Vaughn, Ph.D., highlights many successful events from this summer at UCR University Extension. One of these events was the 25th year of the highly successful Advanced Placement Summer Institute (APSI). High school educators from across the nation came to UCR University Extension and took classes ranging from biology, physics, calculus, computer science, human geography, African American studies, to U.S. and world history.
The STEAM Summer Day Camp at UCR Palm Desert Center for Coachella Valley kids in grades 3-5 was also a big hit! All the students received full scholarships to the program and UCR University Extension hopes to grow the STEAM Camp and scholarship opportunities next summer.
UCR University Extension’s Early Childhood Education Program launched a new initiative that combines study abroad with an educational tour. Students had the opportunity to participate in classes at the Universidad Iberoamericana in Mexico City that helped provide a global perspective on early childhood topics. While studying abroad, students also got to visit iconic sights such as the Museum of Anthropology, the Basilica of Guadalupe, and the Pyramids of Teotihuacan!
In addition to sending students abroad, international students from around the world came to UCR University Extension to study Intensive English, Culture and Language (CAL), and participate in the Disney programs. Students from the Universidad Tecnologica de Queretaro in Mexico and ESIC University in Madrid also participated in customized, 3-week programs in Supply Chain Management and Entrepreneurial Leadership and Innovation.
One of this year’s graduates, Ngoc Dang, came to UCR University Extension to seek training in a new area. She completed the Postgraduate Diploma Program in Logistics, which included placement in a successful and rewarding internship. Her company was so impressed with her abilities, work ethic, and performance that they offered to sponsor her H-1B visa! Ngoc is now a full-time procurement clerk at a company in La Verne and has paved a pathway to a completely new career as a result of her perseverance.
