I'm sad that crunchyroll is so adverse to unionization that they're throwing away such significant talent over such a simple request, I hope they reconsider and I wish you the best of luck with whatever comes next
@DrCranberry

It's sad that many are adverse to unions in america. As a union member, do I think unions 100% work? Yes, I do. Do I think there are shitty unions that DON'T work? Yes, I do. There are jobs that are impossible to unionize just because of how unions SHOULD work effectively. Unions work most effectively with contracted labor, Welders, Carpenters, Voice Actors, ect. who move from job to job, company to company, role to role. In the case of many unions grocery stores, railways, teachers, ect. I think these unions are harder to get anything done and in most cases become horrifically corrupt under themselves, because you arent contracted workers selling your skills to anyone but 1 company. Thus they can do whatever the hell they want to you and you can't fight back or just move onto the next job. The fact that Crunchyroll is Anti-union is incredibly sad, especially after buying Funimation, they've realized they have a monopoly on this. Which is funny by the way, because Crunchyroll used to steal subbed anime from more talented individuals and then copyright strike their piracy acting as if it was theres. NEVER, let Crunchyroll live that down.

This hurts and it's deeper than just "my favorite show is getting muddled and tainted by corporate greed, fear and arrogance," it's also about people's livelihoods. Unions are to protect people trying to make a living and wanting to be treated fairly. Even the word "union" makes big industries flinch. Not only does this situation hurt Mob Psycho, it might ripple into more projects. I don't even like anime that much, there's only a select few I enjoy but Mob is just my favorite show in general. I feel bad for anyone this is going to effect be it the actors or the fans because there's passion from both sides. It's personal. Not every actor is in it for the paychecks. Some are fans too and just want to do right by the material. And yes, there's bigger problems in the world right now but it's stuff like this that helps get people through these tough times. For the 25 minutes someone gets to be happy watching something, that might be the only joy they have in that entire day. Sports, video games, other hobbies or interests, these things to some are (in extreme cases) the reasons they're still living. I've been fortunate enough to have been dealt a decent hand and while I still have my demons, I know a lot of people have it way worse. It really is the little things in life that makes everything worth it. Anyway, I respect his decision to hold his ground to Crunchyroll. It sucks, yes, but it's also necessary within the industry. Voice actors are often disrespected and treated as replaceable compared to live action actors. That's something that's gotta change and unfortunately, that change had to start with the last season of Mob Psycho 100. But hey, I guess the backlash and possible loss of viewership and revenue was worth not having a conversation

On a similar note, my dad wants me to apply to Walmart instead of my current job because it pays more. What he doesn’t get is that, Walmart is non union, while my workplace is. It’s not just about money. It’s about guarantees that you can’t be fired for no reason, you have the union to back you up. It’s about guaranteed breaks so that you don’t kill your body, it’s making sure the “benefits” of the company are actually impactful. Companies like crunchyroll know this, and they would rather lose talented employees than lose a single cent of profit. I hope the workers at crunchyroll can find a way to get the union rep they deserve.

@@kneau I am aware Sony owns Crunchyroll and I know not all unions are equal. However, he met with Crunchyroll representatives about simply setting up a meeting with SAG-AFTRA representatives to potentially negotiate a contract. Nothing was set in stone. They could have had the meeting and decided against forming a contract. Union work (in the most basic sense) provides fair wages, health care, retirement and general security to the actors. They're freelance workers after all so they can't really get any benefits besides pay from the studios they work for. He was even willing to do this season off union just for a discussion. Given I've been trying to keep myself in the loop with any information I can, I feel I'm well informed. You can blame Crunchyroll, Sony or any middle man potentially involved, no matter how you slice it this is a rough situation for all parties involved. So with all the facts I've gathered, the people I'm going to push the most blame to is Crunchyroll because they are the face of the issue and showing our frustration to them will find its way to the top

I haven't watched the dub but do love the series and I'm a big supporter of unions. I hope Crunchyroll change their minds, it's pretty disappoiting to say the least that Crunchyroll weren't willing to even talk about it. It just highlights the importance of unions all over again. In general companies, even good ones, exploit their workers to hell and back when unions aren't involved. I will certainly look to watch the dub before my subscription ends. If this is how Crunchyroll wants to behave and this is the route they want to continue down, I honestly would rather not support them. I'm unfortunately not in a position to join a union that would fight for my rights as the union in my industry has little to no teeth and it feels like they are not willing to do anything to upset my employer.

Mob 100 was one of the few shows I would watch dubbed. The voice acting cast made the show and played their role well. Sad news to hear. I wish the best for you and this series. But I am probably switching back to subbed :/

honestly, your voice is a big part of what got me into MP100. I've been a fan of yours since I got into automata and fire emblem echoes around the same time and hearing your voice acting is always a treat! I started up MP100 a few months ago without knowing you were involved and was so charmed by your performance that it really elevated the show for me

i really hope crunchyroll reconsiders. If they don’t I just want to express my gratitude and thank you for your talent and hard work. I love how you brought mob’s character to life and you were one of the many reasons I loved rewatching the dub. Even though this is such an unfortunate situation, I have so much respect for you. Standing your ground and advocating for yourself is admirable. Once again, thank you for all your hard work!

Very sorry to hear, Kyle. But thank you for standing up. Sony and Crunchyroll have been making some huge mistakes and greedy moves as of late. First, they refused to bring back Mob to Toonami (and apparently literally everything else, Sony's trying to create a "Crunchyroll Jail" with their monopoly), now they're refusing to bring back you guys to the show for season 3? What a joke this monopoly has become. For the sake of anime as a whole, things definitely need to change.

As a director myself I can certainly see both sides of this Union contracts offer more protection for the actors, but increase production costs and SAG-AFTRA typically don’t like you using non-union actors on union productions Crunchyroll could take the meeting, but if it were to go south there’s always the risk of SAG-AFTRA saying “ok you don’t want to play ball, then no more Union workers” and tell their members not to take any jobs from Crunchyroll. It certainly wouldn’t be the first time SAG-AFTRA has tried that approach But I know people who swear by the guilds and people who want nothing to do with them Is it worth having the conversation yes, but in my experience it’s better to have it in an unofficial capacity between two colleagues first as it mitigates the concern of losing either Union and non-union actors
@KyleMcCarley

Hiring non-union actors on a union job is exceedingly easy. Production fills out one page of paperwork called a Taft-Hartley. In the event the actor is deemed ineligible to work, production is given notice and plenty of time to rectify it before any penalties are incurred. At least in the VO world, I have never heard of a Taft-Hartley being rejected. The idea that non-union actors would be unable to work is, at best, an outdated misconception, and at worst, outright misinformation. Union members are already breaking Global Rule One if they're working non-union, so the threat of SAG-AFTRA issuing a Do Not Work order is present with or without a meeting. I would think it's higher now than it would have been had they taken a behind-closed-doors, let's-see-what-middle-ground-we-can-find, no-strings-attached meeting. Especially because current wages at Crunchyroll are so close to current SAG-AFTRA minimums, meaning finding that middle-ground should be a very simple matter.

@@KyleMcCarley I’ve seen and heard it happen plenty of times on live action productions, but that’s just in my own experience. It maybe far less common for VO work, but since I don’t have much experience with VO I’ll take your word on it True it is against the rules and hiring a union actor for a non union production is always a risk, because they could flip the production. Still sometimes you have a friend who’s Union that you want to use, but you don’t have the money to go full union and they don’t mind doing it because they’re a friend and they like the project As for Crunchyroll you’re right by refusing an official meeting they’ve likely put themselves on SAG-AFTRA’s radar as a company to be wary of. If I remember correctly it was a similar situation with a game developer that eventually lead to a SAG-AFTRA strike for video game VO work a few years ago As for Crunchyroll I can understand some of their possible concerns with taking the meeting, but I can’t understand refusing the meeting all together as it does put them in an awkward position moving forward. I would think given the recent merger they could ask to delay it until the two companies have finished merging. Plus they might end up in a union situation regardless if Texas repeals it’s right to work laws
