Thank you! I’d be interested to see what you make of Tomb of Sand. It’s quite deceptive, both because of the layout making it go by quickly, but also challenging at some places to grasp everything, I think.

Yay for Claire DeWitt, Zen Detective. So pleased you got a kick out of it. She's such a deliciously self-destructive genius. I've read the third in the trilogy and I have to believe that there will be more DeWitt to come.

Thank yooou. You might like those! I’m not sure if I’ve seen you read something like them. Tomb of Sand I’ve not read anything like at all. It’s quite unconventional though. Claire probably hinges on if you vibe with the humour or not. It’s kind of weird I did? I usually don’t! Yeah I really don’t care where the red fern grows apparently

Well I know Shelly wasn’t super into it. I think it was a meh for her. I just really don’t like the depiction of masculinity around certain things, and I never grew up with pets, so it was a big miss for me hah Yeah I forgot to compare Claire DeWitt to Dirk Gently Holistic Detective agency. It’s kinnnnd of like that, sans supernatural stuff.

It's great to hear your thoughts on Tombs of Sand. I have usually read Partition literature in my mother tongue, Bengali and few English novels by Indian authors. If I do read Tombs of Sand, my hope is to attempt it in the original Hindi. Thanks for a great discussion.

Wow! I have never thought of Red Fern in those terms at all! 😂 I did read it first as a child and I had grandparents that were from Oklahoma. My friend Christine really enjoyed Tomb of Sand. I usually jive with Lispector. I don't think I've read the one you spoke of though. One of these days you and I are going to read a book we both like and can gush about it together! ☺

I’m sure it’s of its time and place. Pretty sure if I asked my parents for two dogs growing up and I refused to eat and cried about it to try and manipulate them into it even though we didn’t have any money, it’d go a much different way. Tomb of Sand and Lispector are both endeavours in their own way. I’m sure we’ve read plenty we agree on. Didn’t you recently read and like The Ravens Boys? I liked those books a lot. One of my favourite YA ones.

Well the translator does mention there’s a ton of partition fiction that has never been translated. Which seems wild, considering the west’s appetite with Indian fiction specific to the topic. The popular out of it seems to be about it…?

Wow going from Where the Red Fern Grows to Tomb of Sand is quite a leap in length and content- though maybe they both deal with grief and longing? Not so sure on a book focused on staring at a roach?! Though I admit I am one of those who take bugs outside over killing them whenever possible. 😊
@SpringboardThought

Hah yeah there’s no rhyme or reason to my selections usually, I’m flighty! Though sometimes there will be weird emergent connections. The big book was a weird and wild one. I think there’s a dichotomy between her initial reaction to kill it and the connection she feels to it afterward that ends up being quite empathetic.

Nice to hear your opinion about the book Tomb of Sand. I have not yet read the book in either Hindi or English. But when I read, I must first read the book in Hindi and then read it in English. Tomb of Sand is very difficult to translate into English because of all the word play and the puns, alliteration obviously that can't be conveyed 100% in English and so translator had to create the illusion, the same illusion the feel of that word play in English. That's why I prefer to read this in original language. But I will say one thing that many such good novels in Bengali language ( my mother tounge) are not reaching the readers of the world due to lack of translation. Despite the fact that Bengali is the sixth language in the world, books written in this language have been translated to a lesser extent.

It makes sense to read the original if possible, I’d be surprised if it wasn’t better. And it is stupid more things don’t get translated, the translator notes something similar in her note at the back!

I’m not sure there was a part I got to where he doesn’t cry. Very emotionally manipulative and often his tears get him his way. He is never rebuked for his selfishness but usually rewarded and then all to go hunt and kill something anyway? Not something I can understand and wasn’t even explained, just his most fervent desire, why bother explaining what even appeals to the boy about it, other than he saw some hounds once and also wants them. Maybe if I grew up with animals I’d understand it better.
