Prof. Mark Levi is an applied mathematician who uses geometry and analysis to understand physical problems. He writes a monthly column titled 'Mathematical Curiosities' and books for a popular audience, including 'Why Cats Land on Their Feet' and 'The Mathematical Mechanic' (Amazon top 10 bestseller for science in 2009), in which he uses physical intuition to prove well-known mathematical theorems.
Prof. Levi had chosen - with some live input from the audience - a few short topics from the list below. He described that while some of those were just for fun, others were eye-openers for him.
Euler’s polyhedral formula E-V+F=2 proved using electric circuits
A water-based proof of the Cauchy-Schwarz inequality
Finding curvatures and areas using a bike
Finding roots of polynomials using flotation
How to open a wine bottle with a book
No background beyond basic geometry is needed.
