People, especially younger people, don't realize, that corporal punishment was the rule of the day and it wasn't just for slaves.....Whippings, switchings, and all sorts of cruel punishments for the smallest infractions was standard practice..Hanging by the thumbs , stockades, etc...People were very cruel back then in a way we can't comprehend today because we didn't live back then......Also, any cabinets cupboards chests or really anything with a door or lid, had a lock on it..You can see this in today's antiques....Why was this?...The world was different back then.

The narrator was very good and he had me engaged. Joseph was a humble guy to be sure because as bad as he made it sound I'm sure it was much much worse. The 1/2 mile kill shot of an enemy sniper is one of a few mentions of actual engagement, tho, it wasn't Joseph that did him in. So glad Joseph wrote the book and hope knows it's still being read.

What is really interesting is how many times he mentions the Irish soldiers in the "Revolutionary" army - Their role was clearly minimized in the subsequent official narrative of the American Revolutionary War - yet recent revisionist history suggests that they made up between 30-50% of the "Revolutionary" troops. A not-too-dissimilar approach (With similar figures - between Irish-born soldiers and soldiers from Irish families) appears to have been adopted when writing up the American Civil War.

So Joseph Plumb Martin I've had the patience to follow it to the end and don't regret it! (Reference to the ending part.) Those memoirs were sometimes a bit boring and repetitive but this is a good thing! Otherwise they would not be so authentic. Plenty of exhausting marches, awful approvisation, tedious camp work and relatively little fighting. I find it very interesting that during many years of this conflict government had not made progress in logistics and the soldiers were hungry till the very end. Not to mention that they were cheated with their pay and not given the 100 acres that they were promissed.
