as a new convert, what drew me to the catholic church was traditional, traditional morals and history of teaching spanning 1000s of years. It tires me living in a world that praises new, modern, ,move on, forget the past, experiment, do it different. The church service is a time for me to concentrate on one thing, it then allows me to sort out all the other things in the crazy world. I loved dance music as a kid but dont want that being played while i concentrate on the one simple thing. im afraid Dr Mary this sounds like a new church, I want the old to keep me focused as the new world made me loose my focus.

I couldn’t go to church as a child but have always had the love and direction of the Holy Spirit in my life as I was baptized Catholic as a baby. As an adult attending Mass the whole Trinity is present and there’s not a moment that’s not exciting and filled with the sacred. In experiences with the Holy Spirit I have learned that there needs to be both deep solemn worship of the Lord Jesus and then the joy and happiness that is experienced as children of God.

I grew up in a community very influenced by charismatic theology. I was never able to feel the way they say I was supposed to, or let loose in worship the way they say I was supposed to. As a result, for years I avoided thinking about faith because every time I did I despaired because I thought I wasn’t good enough. It wasn’t until I dived into other theological traditions that I was able to feel spiritually fulfilled. Charismaticism is fine for those with the right disposition I suppose, but it was only ever damaging to me.

that's a very honest story, and i find your view perfectly ok and valid. But i think some in the movement are immature, so if they said you had to feel something (a misunderstanding possible in a movement that includes emotion though not exclusively), then they didn't need to say that to you. the more mature would have said, "you are good enough, and fine in your very honest reactions". meantime, God seems to be moving here in some people's lives... i'm sorry for you in that expericene, i hear you, i respect it greatly. but keep a door open if you ever feel like trying another group, but be cool, don't expect much. maybe just celebrate some people benefit and come to Christ there... you're awesome, man!

My experience with a community was 40 years ago. But that doesn't invalidate my experience and it doesn't automatically assume that the same things may not be going on today. I never received the gift of tongues, and was made to feel "less than". The leader of the Life In The Spirit Seminar asked who wasn't speaking in tongues. Some of us raised our hands, and we were "rebaptized" in the Spirit. I also noticed that when I did "speak in tongues", I was actually just imitating the leader. If I had stood there and said nothing, I don't know what would have happened! I would be careful. I have heard stories of people who knew Latin and were listening to some of the utterances that were coming out of someone's mouth. The people who were speaking in Latin were profaning God. We are to test the spirits, but even the fortune tellers say that they need to be careful that the wrong spirits don't get a foothold in. One more thing: I have heard about training people to manifest the gifts of the spirit. I have to agree with one of the posters here. Very dangerous. That's what the new agers do. The bible and the church clearly state that we are not to do that! God is the one who chooses what gifts He will bestow upon us, not us!

I have to say I experienced the Baptism in the Holy Spirit in 1974. It was powerful and transformational. My love for the Lord, and the Word has never waned but has grown. At 74 I am still on fire for the Trinity. I lived in New Orleans when the Holy Spirit fell on that city and surrounding areas like a tidal wave because of the move of God that fell on that small group of Catholic students up north in the late 60’s (I can’t remember the college name maybe Notre Dame). I had a friend who took me to my first charismatic meeting in 1973. Back then they were held in the priest rectory. I didn’t totally understand what was happening but it was beautiful. Just a handful of people singing and praying and sharing. I never experienced anything wild or emotional ever at any meeting. It took me a whole year to pray and study about it. I remember reading Pat Boon’s book A New Song about he and his family’s experience with the Baptism of the Holy Spirit. But When I read the book of Acts about how the Holy Spirit fell upon the 120 souls in the upper room at Pentecost and this is the kicker that Mary, the blessed Mother was there and received the Holy Spirit with the evidence of speaking in tongues I was sold. By that time, a year latter, they held the meetings in the church and every Friday evening a city wide prayer meeting was held at Loyola University and nuns and priests and Catholics packed out the students auditorium. Mass was the most beautiful powerful God filled holy presence that was tangible and visible like a smoke filled the place and was heaven on earth. Most joyous. Everything came alive and reading the Bible all made sense. Seek the Baptism in the Holy Spirit and evidence of tongues. Tongues is a supernatural gift the Holy Spirit gives that is a powerful prayer language and the Holy Spirit prays God’s perfect Will through us. You life your walk will be taken to new life in Him. ❤

What scares me is how much a lot of these comments sound like things the Pharisees would say to Jesus."How dare you heal on the Sabbath"/"This man has the nerve to dine with sinners"/"Who are you to forgive sins?" I'm new to the Catholic understanding, and a lot of things seem really compelling at the core of church teaching, but it's disheartening on the ground when you see Catholics afraid that Satan is going to possess them through the use of drums. I say that tongue and cheek, please don't be offended. But isn't it clear to us by now that Jesus isn't concerned with these trivial things, but rather with the heart? The letter of the law kills when applied on it's own by means of human strength. That's not to say, "All tradition is harmful". No. To say so would be just another legalistic dogma. Tradition can be a beautiful way to preserve that which is sacred for future generations to experience. EMPTY tradition is harmful, because it quenches the spirit and sucks the life out of you. This is a big roadblock holding me back from the Catholic church at present, simply because it makes me sad that the people claiming to be the True Church can simultaneously have such a low resolution understanding of God.

I appreciated this discussion. As a former protestant, who was exposed to the protestant version of the charismatic renewal on a regular basis, I would only share similar concerns as I might to any movement within the church in regards to guarding against excesses. And just as I consider myself a traditionalist, but find many of excesses in the rad-trad camp problematic, I am sure the same exists in the charismatic renewal. As a protestant, seeing a certain giving into emotionalism, performance, false or pretended gifts, etc. But otherwise, within the proper bounds of the Church, their is room for this movement as well, and the Spirit has worked through them to the good. One particular point of concern is in the understanding of the gifts. I'm not sure how it is in the Catholic Charismatic Movement, but in the protestant, everyone claimed to exercise any manner of gift from healing, to tongues, to prophesy. Where the scriptures are very clear, that the Lord distributes the gifts as He sees fit, that there is need of every member of the body. To the effect that not just anyone can prophesy, or speak in tongues. This is one aspect of Charismatic belief that I found troubling and doctrinally erroneous.

The separation between “science” and “passion” in our cultural is the direct effect of Cartesian Dualism. René Descartes popularized the view that the mind and the body are separate entities, such that their activities have no significant bearing upon the other. Think “ghost in the machine”. The Catholic Church rightly teaches that the body and mind (soul) are harmoniously interconnected and interdependent, holding that the activities of the body affect the soul and the activities of the soul affect the body.

CR continues to do that work of the first meeting, setting faith on fire, and vast majority interestingly! come out passionate about the Church's teachings and very open to latin mass, tradition, etc. i.e. because the Holy Spirit is present there with real power, i.e. God in the Church doing His work for a renewed Church, saving souls. The Church has been charismatic from the beginning. I think that Matt Fradd just has no idea what charismatic worship is. I don't find the STEREOTYPE of charismatic prayer or worship attractive AT ALL. I'm highly skeptical of anything that smacks of 'emotionalism.' But having read a book by the Polish authors Bishop Andrzej Siemieniewski and Miroslaw Kiwka: Christian Charismatic Movements: Threat or Promise? - I have learned that charismatic prayer is biblical and nothing new. It's also wrong to characterize it as 'emotional,' because that implies whipping up the emotions and calling it the Holy Spirit (which some people definitely DO; I found that on a visit to a Baptist Church - it was exhausting the way they were manipulating emotions with music and preaching and dancing in the aisles). It's more about releasing control and letting God express himself through you. When soon-to-be-King Saul was seized with the Spirit and prophesied in a frenzy, he wasn't giving himself over to emotionalism; the Spirit rushed upon him, and Saul expressed what God was doing within him. The Holy Spirit overshadowed Mary, and her spirit burst forth in the Magnificat (a song that sounded a lot like a song she would have already known from Scripture). When the Holy Spirit descended on Mary and the Apostles, they prophesied in languages. It wasn't them whipping up their emotions, but God working within them. I'm not a charismatic, but I have at least learned that looking at it from the outside, you will think that its emotionalism and fraud. But looking at people kneeling before a statue of Mary and praying the rosary - if you look from the outside - will look like idolatry. Might be a good idea to just listen to genuine charismatics telling you what's really going on - and maybe opening yourself up to it, just once. Go on, give the Holy Spirit a chance.

The Catholic charismatic renewal started in 1967, but yet the attendance at Mass has decreased. And Catholic's moved to protestantism. I spent 3 yrs attending a Catholic charismatic renewal meeting weekly. A good learning experience, but will never go back. Catholic's don't need any movement or renewal, including the charismatic one. We need "... one Lord, one faith, one baptism, and one God and Father of all, over all, through all and within all..." Go to the Catechism, Church Father's, Doctor's and Saint's writings. Read encyclicals and exhortations etc.. Spend time in the Bible daily and say the rosary daily, and see what the Holy Spirit will do through you. Praying the Litanies and Novena's will do wonders in your life. And there can never be enough said about spending time with Jesus in Adoration. Catholic's have been Blessed with so much to get us this earthly experience, we don't need to be looking elsewhere.

People would fall in the spirit, and would peek through their eyes to see what was going on. The sign of the cross was never done. Our Father. Creed was never prayed. The Rosary never mentioned. The only Priest that would speak always had his personal secretary with him.She travelled with him.HHHMMM. He did not wear his collar and he never spoke Catholic. The Catholic charismatic renewal is a protestant prayer meeting or some of the protestant church's. And I say church"s lightly. Dr. Mary Healy never mentioned any Catholic traditions or teaching's. But she praised a Protestant speaker. Her prayer was only 4 minutes long. I have heard prayers as long as 20 minutes. Which makes them compatible with Matthew 6:6-7. Catholic Litanies and Novena"s are compatible with Isaiah 6:3 and Revelation 4:8. When you don't know how to pray there is always the Psalms.

To insinuate charismaticism led to the decline on attendance at Mass is a logical fallacy. It is also logically flawed to claim that the Church and the faith itself were in fine shape until 1960. The assumption that so long as we had tradition, the faith was growing and its adherents were actually believers is as naive as believing every fruit of the charismatic renewal has been authentically of God.

No such lack of faith should tempt our heart. We are certain that everyone receives him” - Since then he is received nowadays too, somebody may say, “why is no one speaking in the languages of all nations?” Because now the Church speaks in the languages of all peoples. Previously the Church was to be found in one people, when it was speaking in the languages of all. By speaking with the languages of all it was signifying what was going to happen, that by growing among peoples, it would speak everyone’s language.” God no longer needed to give the gift of tongues because the Church now speaks in all languages. It's one thing to believe miraculous healings are real or even common. It's another to believe they are an "on call" power to be expected anytime one asks for it. The Church believes in prophecy but condemns divination. What's the difference? It is not that divination is always false. Exorcists confirm that demons access the foolish through Tarot, Ouija, and other occult practices and demons can certainly perform supernatural feats. The difference is that prophecy occurs at God's inititiation for God's own purposes, whereas divination attempts to control the spirits or claim supernatural powers for oneself. If a saint can regularly perform miraculous healings, it is because that saint is exceptionally receptive to the Lord's will. He or she knows when God offers a cure and when He will answer prayers in a hidden way. I have known very faithful people who had experience of healings, had confidence that the Lord would answer, and yet did not apparently heal the person they prayed over. That's fine. The Lord is good and surely answered in another way. I sympathize with the Charismatic Renewal in that the Lord does indeed continue to accompany His teachings and with signs and wonders, including the sacraments. We should ask and expect more from our loving Lord. But this on-call view of healings seems as false and reckless to me as Herbeck's claim that the gift of tongues is an on-call personal prayer language, rather than an occasionally inspired ability to communicate clearly across boundaries. We should ask the Lord for help with expectation of a response, but not presume to know the Lord's will apart from inspiration. His miracles are for His plan and not for ours.

I don't think Dr. Healey said anything about "on-call" healing, but to your point about tongues I think Paul does give indication that tongues is not an uncommon phenomenon, but something so regular that he says he desires that everyone pray in tongues but even more that they would prophesy. Seems to indicate it being a pretty common reality. Herbeck is spot on in my experience. I'd invite you to go to a Life in the Spirit Seminar and see what the Lord reveals.

"On call" healings are not the belief or practice of (orthodox) charismatic Catholic circles. I've spent the last 5 years in a charismatic community and while this may be a first impression, it quickly became clear to me that these small miracles are not something that God gives just because you want them. They're not even really gifts *for you:* rather, they are given when they lead to greater glory for God and conversion. Think of the Acts of the Apostles: all of the signs and wonders performed at that time were always for the advancement of the Kingdom, and those who would try to wield that power pridefully (like the Jewish exorcists that Dr. Healy mentioned in this interview) were met with disappointment. As I continue to grow in my faith and see the charismatic and traditional communities that I'm a part of, it frequently astounds me how despite the differences in expression, the underlying orthodoxy is the same.

@@T_frog1 That's like saying that there is no orthodox monasticism, since the "monastic movement" had a beginning. Furthermore, given the photo on your profile, I have to ask, do you believe that Vatican II and the Novus Ordo are valid? SSPX is not an authoritative representative of authentic Church teaching. If your response to that is that the Charismatic Movement is not authoritative either. I am not claiming that, I am claiming that the charismatic nature of the Church has been affirmed again and again by recent Popes and that does bears the weight of authoritative representation. Beyond that, I would never advocate for joining a "movement." I think the use of the term movement denotes a subjective reality rather that acknowledging the Charismatic nature of the Church and inviting people to join themselves to the Holy Spirit, the "Mover." Also, to be clear, none of this is intended to call into question the validity, beauty, etc, of the TLM. My charismatic pastor has an affection for the TLM and celebrated it as his first mass. I love tradition, it's rigidity and structure because I know when we pray, when we sing, when we worship liturgically and also in community the prayers and songs are objectively sound in theology, no risk of heresy. The prayers were written by theologians, they were written by the saints. Therefore, I can then let my defenses down and open my heart and worship God knowing the prayers are not heretical. When she was praying I tried to get into it and open my heart but I was on guard listening to see if she would pray heretically. I did not feel the Holy Spirit rather I felt defensive. I want to add something to my original post. We have to define what it means to praise God. In my mind, I am always associating the word 'praise' with Mass. Praise and worship does not belong in the Mass at all. The church, over two millennia, refined the Sacred Liturgy into what it was before the 'reformers' got a hold of it (Cardinal Begnini was proven to be a freemason; apparently his mission was to weaken the Liturgy to weaken the faith, and boy was he successful). For me, I'd rather stick to what the church has always prescribed for the Mass; the solemn sacrifice of the Mass. Solemn (since we are brought to the foot of the Cross), as opposed to exuberant or joyful. Doesn't sound like much fun, but offering a sacrifice is not 'fun' per se. It is for God...not for us. Protestantism is listed in the Syllabus of Errors promulgated by Pope Pius IX: Number 18: "Protestantism is nothing more than another form of the same true Christian religion, in which form it is given to please God equally as in the Catholic Church." That statement alone is enough for me to reject praise and worship music. Without a doubt, there are some songs out there that I like, but strictly for entertainment value; nothing more. Yes, music stirs emotions which is why we need to be very careful about the type of music. Lastly, I totally agree with Dr. Healy on the point she made about reason being in charge and in control of emotions. I am afraid the everyday person does not know that in or out of the charismatic renewal.

Of course the term renewal is the only term that can be used, because it does not fall inside Sacred Tradition, there is not an unbroken Apostolic Continuation. Because, generally, after the apostolic age, the specific charisms granted at Pentecost tended to fade out. Miracles were still ongoing and God still bestowed gifts on his people but it was not in the same manner where everybody coming out of the baptismal font or being chrismated could speak in tongues and prophecy and heal. These gifts didn’t disappear all together but rather were granted on an individual basis, few and far between. For example, St Vincent Ferrer could speak in tongues as did the Apostles… but that was about 1200 years removed. St Augustine says the gift of tongues disappeared from the Churcb because it had served as a sign that the church would embrace all people and that, by his day, the church had already spread to many lands so that sign had already accomplished its task.

I too am a former member and deeply love this parish (I entered the Church and was married there, but then God called us to move out of state). The Charismatic renewal isn't "added" to the Mass, but, as Martha said, integrated. The liturgy is not changed (and often the original Latin/Greek words are used for Mass parts), but there is greater participative reverence by the lay people: they actually sing for starter! the corporate Mass parts are truly their own "Kyrie - Lord have mercy" - is truly penitential, while the "Gloria" is a joyful acclimation of praise. The Eucharist is reverenced deeply; the true Presence on the altar is adored from the moment of consecration throughout the duration, with appropriate postures of adoration to the King. There may be certain physical postures that people take as they participate in the Mass parts that encourage participation. For example, a bowed head and hands held out for the Kyrie, or joyful hands raised for the Gloria or great Amen. These are simply outward signs of inward expression. In addition, outside of Mass (at least in the past) they have had wonderful prayer meetings, healing ministries, courses on deepening your spiritual life (Doctors of the Church, etc.)

You need to ask yourself in prayer and privately why that is, then ask yourself if you gave that priviliged movement a genuine try for a year or two. I may know it far more deeply than you, growing up in a family very involved for years - so how do i take your comment seriously if you reply to this that you only dropped in a few times but were too timid to leave your space and make your self vulnerable to God acting ? Read the Book of Acts for more info. It's a book of Holy Scripture, the first after the Gospels. But really, I'm teasing you, but did you read it well? Dr. Healy is right when she says the usage of classical music in Mass, and the use of all the smells and bells, is an aesthetic experience rather than a spiritual one. That said, that “aesthetic” experience is still indispensable and to be preferred over others. This is why: the *ethos* of that aesthetic is one of regality, of sacredness, and of mysticism. Whether or not people make a spiritual connection to the Heavenly Father (which is of course the ideal and one of the primary purposes of liturgy), the aesthetic makes an objective statement about the nature of God and the demands he makes of His creatures. Even when the King takes us as sons, His Fatherhood does not do away with His kingship. When we have Him as our Father, we do not cease to be His subjects. The filial intimacy, though it transcends the formalism, needs to be fostered /within/ the formal context, not apart from it. *DISCLAIMER* I am not a theologian nor a teacher in the Church. Take my word only for what it’s worth.

59:56 Regarding music, when I experienced Catholic Charismatic Renewal for the first time, I realized the truth of the words I was singing. "I want to be holy, set apart for You, Lord. I choose to be holy... ready to do Your will." It changed my life, my husband's life; it changed everything. And we are still involved 30 years later. ❤

Thank you for such a wonderful prayer of praise and thanksgiving, Dr Healy. Thank you, Matt, for bringing this wonderful program so that we could hear the beauty of prayer in alignment with Jesus. May Catholics everywhere come to experience the saving power of Jesus, and seek a deeper love through the Holy Spirit. Jesus is at work in His Holy Church, and as His children, He longs to teach us more and more!

I don't usually go to praise and worship services unless I'm with my protestant friends. I used to hate it when I was protestant, but since I've become Catholic I've found it's a good time to meditate and read scripture. I don't usually cry, though. The first time I cried at Mass was at the Easter Vigil when I was confirmed and the second time was yesterday at the mass for the Assumption of Mary. But each time I cried was during the hymnals.

I also cry out of love for the words and music which adore our Lord. . My tears just roll over my cheeks but it is not the same kind of extreme emotions and falling on the floor, writhing etc. which happen during the charismatic sessions. That is definitely not normal and exorcists all say that that happens to the people who they exorcize.

I have another question. The mass is also described as the wedding feast . Do we dance at weddings? All kinds of music goes on at a wedding and that music is a celebration of joy. The season of the liturgy should reflect in the music. The babe leapt in Elizabeth’s womb. Everyone who receives Holy Communion in a state of grace is privileged to carry the Christ . I have been to Easter masses that where more like a Lenten Dirge. Yet Jesus is with us no matter how bad the music , or how great the homily or even If the celebrate himself believes or not.

@@ilonkastille2993 You ought to talk to people who have experienced resting in the Spirit themselves rather than falsely claiming that this gift of God's presence and peace is demonic. It is the very opposite of that. For me, it was a foretaste of Heaven, an experience of being surrounded and filled with God's love. It was life-changing for me, and for many others.

I was born and raised in a catholic home. I went to catholic school and I am totally in tune with my faith and that is the main reason I like traditional mass, however, catholics that are "lukewarm" or teens (like my daughter) that have an attention spam of a squirrel (lol) enjoy the carismatic approach and will keep them going back to mass due to the vivid ambience. I don't see anything wrong with that. Many many manyyy times I see the congregation falling asleep, checking their phones, talking and at the end running back to their cars. We live in times of constant stimulation and if carismatic masses keep people coming back, why not.

Uniformity with God's will begins by taking action in accord with your duties of your state in life and doing all things with great love for God. What is one doing by seeking signs or inspirations? Did not Christ say it was a sign of a perverse generation that seeks signs and wonders? Could not the devil inspire you? I am sincere because I have seen terrible fruit from the CCR in my community.

Matt 17:20 He said to them, “Because of your little faith. Amen. I say to you, if you have the faith the size of a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, “Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing shall be impossible to you.” And you surrender to God’s Holy Will. But I am always asking for God to increase my faith. I would hate think my lack of faith was in the way of anything God wants to do.

@@maryshannon7551 Epbesians 2:8-10 says we are to do the works God has prepared for us to do, and 1 Corinthians 13 says you can have faith to move mountains but unless you have love you are nothing. We must do all things for God's sake, for love of Him. As Saint Therese teaches us, do small things with great love. What does it profit our souls to ask for great signs and wonders (Matt 16:4)? It is by our love which we are judged, not by miracle worked through us. The devil is cunning and can and will lead us astray with all sorts of illusions...if it is wonders we seek.

I think there's a pretty generous distinction to be made between believing such signs and wonders are within God's will or can be manifested even today, and believing based on the signs. It is the difference between being skeptical and being gullible. One tends toward doubt, and the other toward credulity. While skepticism could certainly be said to be safer, it can lead in short order to rejection of the supernatural or miraculous wholesale.

These are the extremes I am referring to. As well as desiring the lower gifts and asking for them...what good does speaking in tongues do in a community that all speaks Spanish and English? Or rather when no one else can interpret the gibberish coming out of the supposed ecstasy occurring? It is an immature and immodest show...not in line with Tradition...many put it on just to fit I. With the hysteria.

I know the charismatic movement is getting some negative press, for having Protestant-izing Catholicism, which Ms. Healy and others are scrambling to deny, but in this excellent interview by Matt, she admits that her “journey” is full of Protestant authors, healers, etc! I spent over 25 years in non-denominational churches, and you can’t distinguish her talk and theirs. Why isn’t the truth of real Catholicism enough? As someone said when I returned to the Cath faith, “why would you choose hamburger, when you can have prime rib?”

Before I watched this video I watched a KZitem short of Russel Brand speaking about how after you start reading the Bible you start to notice coincidence all around. I definitely feel this was the Holy Spirit Speaking to me today.

I'm not really sure how you can be familiar with Catholic doctrine, and theology and not listen to this and have every hair on the back of your neck standing up in every red flag go up... I really even struggle to think of a time where (even my interpretation of) historical Church figures would accept this movement and not immediately suppress it and use it as a reaffirmation of among other things layity needs to know it's place as well as women. I get that I'm a cave man, but do you guys see this as well but just think the church would have been wrong to do that? I don't think I've ever seen a movement that's more obviously satanic.

Dr Mary Healy using examples from the Saints...i.e St Thomas Aquinas to " push back " against Matt's " push back " .... I just loved that. I love gregorian chant but as she says it's a minority form of praise and worship, modern forms are in the majority, so the Lord is using them in His Church to touch His children. St Louis Marie de Montfort did the same. He took the modern, secular songs of his day and composed hymns to Our Lady this way. St John of the Cross too. Union with God is the key. Matt, with all due respect is canonising the means [ gregorian chant ] for the end [ union with God ] I'm all for gregorian...but I'm more interested in whatever form of praise God wants for me and that UNITES me more completely to Him. What serves Him? That's subjective too though... and it can change in different times and places, one time it is chant, another it is happy clappy pour your heart out, all out praise and worship, arms in the air scratching the ceiling!!! It's a pointless discussion for me because the Church recognizes both, She allows both, and both lead us to God and deeper union with Him according to His grace and good pleasure. Dr Healy when she quotes Aquinas and the emotions making acts " more virtuous " had me punching the air for joy!! Emotions are not the enemy... the lack of union with God and His Will and Wishes.... now that's the enemy!!
