Keep in mind that once the marble gate is open, multiple marbles can drop because of the "almost not touching" design of the gate in the first place. So all he has to do is make a "double dropper" module that can quickly reopen the same gate to drop another marble. Alternatively, he could have two droppers over the same note and two channels for that note. Finally, he could run a double Xylophone with double notes to solve this problem, I mean you saw how wide his sketch was, so why not.

i think the size of these pins makes it super obvious what the concept is. but there's a lot of room for variations on this pins what's important is that in the new paradigm, the release is no longer tied to the position of the programming wheel holes it seems likely that meeting other challenges can be done here while maintaining this critical functionality of course, in the new paradigm, he has a very specific approach, pause and release time. he probably can't play notes faster than that at all, and he seems to be ok with that. but a pin could be designed to perfectly match that required profile for two notes in a row. or maybe he will figure out the profile required for two quick drops and put up with a bit of variation on the second drop?

Just trying to pressure test the profile idea - you have different profiles for quarter notes positons in a bar, but the length of the profile runs longer than the 4 quarter note positons. What happens if you want to play more than one quarter note in a bar or even eighth notes in a bar on the same track (same note). It looks like the profile pin would give you unusable space for at least 2 bars so music repeating the same note (for example, like in beethoven's fur elise) would not be possible - am I wrong with this assumption?

I think you should include a recuirement about the user experience of swapping these pins out during a worldtour gig. like you said these are more complicated than just simple pins where you now have to pick the right pin. It is my assumption that you are not going to swap out an unique programming wheel per song (so having as much programming wheels as there are songs in your set) but have a team programming 1 or 2,3 wheels during a song and swap those out quickly. Making sure no human mistakes happen when picking the right pins under a time limit will be no easy task. Yeah that's a good point it seems overly complicated with this design, and the clip mechanism is going to be material dependant so he can't prototype it properly and will have to redesign the clips again for the final materials. IMO he should have channels along the wheel so it looks more like a cog and he can just slide in/out the sections of a song (containing the parts for all instruments in one big piece), with 4 people it would only take a few seconds to replace a section of the wheel and with 20ish sections you might be able to get a whole wheel swapped out in just a minute or two and you could probably get it down to 8 sections or less making it even faster. When prototyping the sections could just be split up into separate parts for each instrument and you just slide them in individually in the correct order.

@RedTurtleGoon
Жыл бұрын
It looks more like the legs are only in tension on insertion and removal. Also, I imagine that Martin is just using 3D printed parts here for prototyping. For the size and volume of these parts required, he'll likely use other materials/methods for the majority of these cam profiles, with occasional one-off parts for unique musical expressions.

You can completely get rid of the divider if you have the marbles tracks never merge. I think this can be achieved by have the return mechanism be inside the programming wheel. so once a marble gets to the bottom it goes into a lifting mechanism that is part of the programming wheel. The programming wheel could be organized so it has the pin ring for a channel then next to it a lifting mechanism with this pattern repeating for every channel. This will make it so each channel has it's own dedicated marble track that bypasses any kind of divider.

You could print the "pins" in different colors so basic notes are easily identifiable. Maybe not as "nice" looking at as all black, but an immediate visual of which are quarter/half notes, etc.

Keep up the good work! I had a thought that the issue of selecting the correct profile could be solved by color coding. Each profile would have a unique color, and the programming instructions would be by color instead of by text descriptor...
@Tsudico
Жыл бұрын
The issue with using color is that if anyone in his crew is colorblind it might cause problems. I agree the text isn't great for quickly changing the wheels though. Perhaps a pattern could be used, so that it can be either be seen or physically felt.

My initial thought is that those profiles are massive, so they will either limit your resolution, or you would have to scale them down a ton and that might cause issues. My suggestion would be to laser cut them out of thin material. That way you can stack like 3 or 4+ profiles into the same slot. That way you could have more notes per profile section. Like, you could stack a 1, 2, 3, 4 profile next to each other to play 4 notes per profile.
@petermgruhn

The triggers would have to be narrow and crammed together. And it adds a layer of complexity with fancy triggering. How about if we just look at it as multiple normal tracks per note? That exposes the problem you were solving - space. The drum is only so wide. So make all the triggers the same narrow. So maybe the interesting thing we are really looking for is not a way to trigger special, but a way to make each drum track not strictly tied to one machine response. "See track 7? That is always tom1." vs. "For 'Stairway to Heaven', tracks, 7, 8, 9 go to tom1, tom2, tom3; but on "The Black Page" they are all tom1.

Hi Martin, happy new year! What does the increased pin size do to note repeatability?
@EaglePicking
Жыл бұрын
It's a great idea, but that was my first thought as well. It decreases note speed, but that can obviously be mitigated with a larger wheel or with multiple lanes per note. This is something he'll have to design very well to find a middle ground between pin/profile size, wheel size and playing speed. Still: I really like this idea, although it might need a few redesigns before it reaches maturity.
@Rykvp

He could also include 2+ notes on a single pin since he can choose whatever profile he wants. Although pin stiffness needs to be sufficient for it not to break
@enochs2119
Жыл бұрын
@@Rykvp Yup, I figured that was the plan for note repeatability, and I just figured the 3D print was just a prototype. The actual pin should be made from a more durable material that won't break outright and fail gracefully over time.

The fun project continues; I like the thought put into the programming pins! One caveat: I have experienced cam disks that wear over time, changing the timing of the equipment they were controlling. You should probably make the cam pins of something durable, keep checking the timing, and have a lot of replacement pins for when they wear down.
@Jer_Schmidt

I think this is a great idea. I've been realizing that it's often best to design for future flexibility, rather than trying to make it prefect right away. So I like the idea of having an interface that can accept whatever profiles you come up with in the future.

That looks Awesome! Towards the end you mentioned that it's also important to select the correct pin. I would suggest having each type of pin colour coded for easy identification, and perhaps for a little extra touch of class... create a dedicated carrier case that they can all sit in when not in use.

the pins are more complicated, but what of the wheel? he's no longer figuring out how to drill thousands of precise locations and how to precisely mate up four individual programing wheel pieces. the increased complexity allows the wheel to be WAY simpler, and that's very possibly a net reduction in complexity

I think this is a good idea to perfectly play a particular song, but if you want to play a different one you have to print the pins of the exact size and this takes much longer. I think that maintaining a module is better than creating unique pieces and all different each other
@AJMansfield1
Жыл бұрын
They're not _all_ unique pieces; there's just four distinct shapes for the four different places a quarter note can be in a 4/4 measure, or three pieces for the three places a quarter note can be in a 3/4 measure, etc. Then when the melody is down and he wants to add some articulation to the timing, he can file bits off of the end of the same standard pieces to shift the note timing forward slightly.

I still think you should use a digital sequencer. You proved in your previous videos that a digital trigger works perfectly to that 1/1000 s resolution that you always try to achieve. The plastic things will be inaccurate, a pain to program and will still break. With a digital sequencer, you could just record your notes via MIDI and change the programming in an instant, for example for different songs on a world tour without moving churchbell-sized archaic wheels all over the place. In the Marble Machine 2, the programming wheel was THE BIGGEST part that took up precious place for proper instruments. Now you're doing that same mistake again.

Great concept. I feel like most note timing could be achieved using a single pin with multiple standard presets, like a graduated toothed slider to set the trailing edge to 32nds. The idea would be to cover most needs with one bag of identical pins. Use an infinitely screw-adjustable mode for the odd exception, and only print custom pins for special profiles and reusable sets like "triplet pins" or "swing for " pins.

I've got another even more crazy and awesome idea for the music programming drum. You should make it a combination 3D printer and carving machine. You can have a 3D printer extruder move back and forth (and closer/further) across the drum to create "pegs" wherever you need, and on the same gantry you can also have a carving router to remove the pegs you no longer need. This gives you even more flexibility with peg shape and positioning, and all it requires is designing the shapes, slicing them, waiting for the printing/carving to finish, and, of course, redoing it multiple times to deal with failed prints or ideas that didn't work out quite right. 🙂

An Idea that came to my mind was that you could theoretically try to build it in a way that you could put the wheel in and out of the whole thing (everything you programmed and where you put it in+ the wheel where it is on). So that you can just pull it out, put it down from the wheel. take a already prepared programmed song, put it on the wheel again and then put the wheel intp the machine again. That would be theoratically way easier than reprogramming it when you go on tour. That means, in my theory, the stand for the big wheel with the programmable bits should be on a sliding mechanism. So that you just (for example) pull a lever down and can put it out of the machine and then just put it in again and secure it with the lever. I dont know if this is possible because it was just an random idea in my head and I also dont know if (the people who read this) understood my idea. Anyway, keep up the great work ! I admire how much you dedicate to achieve your dream of a programmable marble maschine. You are truly inspiring me to start with my own ideas.
