Work by Marco Tripodi’s group in the LMB’s Neurobiology Division has resulted in a novel approach which provides, for the first time, a life-long ability to study neural networks, without affecting their normal physiology.
The scientists designed a self-inactivating Rabies virus (SiR), which retains the ability to jump synapses, thus reaching the entire neural network, but does not cause neuronal death. Instead, the virus labels the neurons and allows them to be genetically manipulated - hugely helpful for studying the neural networks.

About the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology (LMB):
The LMB is one of the world's leading research institutes. Discoveries and inventions developed at the LMB, for example DNA sequencing and methods to determine the structure of proteins, have revolutionised all areas of biology. Its scientists work to advance understanding of biological processes at the molecular level. This information will help us to understand the workings of complex systems, such as the immune system and the brain, and solve key problems in human health.
