So true, jazz bass drums are always tuned higher than I expect. Somehow the low end still comes through, probably a combination of the room acoustics and also having an imported real head

Yes my friend! You get the point that the low end is still there! I’ll say it’s the depth of the bass drum gives a lower tone.

Great sound. I’ve recently made a very similar change after hearing how high my professor tuned up his drums for a show. Didn’t even realize how high people really went till I heard it in person and now I don’t want to go any lower haha

I checked out the Italian drummer you mentioned. Very cool! You should also check out another Italian drummer named Franco Dal Montego. Some videos he is just playing a piece of gear he would be selling, but other videos are some performances and wow!!!!! The man is crazy talented! I really think you will enjoy. Any drummer with great taste in music and drums will like his videos 😊

Hello drake, in the jazz sound, is it common to use white frosted bottom drum skins, or do most people use clear skins?
@drakeondrums

It depends, but coated heads are most commonly used

Never understood people tuning just above wrinkle, there are no dynamics with low tunings and with the exception of really sludgy metal, usually sounds boring to me. I get the desire to have the drums pre-EQed by tuning and muffling, but I first fell in love with Joe MOrello on "Take 5" and think that is one of the best drum sounds ever.

OMG my man! I feel the same way! There are great drummer who play jazzy stuff but also get a lower tuning tho like Mark Guiliana and Keith Carlock, I’ll say it’s a different musical choice for each individual. But I second that Joe M had a great inspiring sound on the set!
