Incrementally moving through the modes one accidental at a time following the Circle of 4ths is quite useful. C->F->Bb->Eb->Ab->Db->Gb (all starting on the root) with the outlier of the Lydian preempting the initial Ionian. Using the Circle of 4th (counter clockwise in most "circles" :) For the Key of C = LIMDAPL or Lydian (G scale), Ionian (C scale), Mixo (F scale), Dorian(Bb), Aeolian (Eb), Phrygian (Ab), and lastly Locrian (Db). LIMDAPL (Let's Implement Modes During Any Practice Lesson). Love the lesson. Gratefully

LIMDAPL, nice pneumonic device to find those major scales, just added to my circle of fifths, very easy to remember and useful, thanks! One a slightly related side note, as heard in Hey Joe, the circle of fifths also adds an accidental if you move in the other direction, i.e. each fifth, but changing key each time. It helped me realize that it's nice to modulate as you improvise over the song, instead of playing that E minor blues and major pentatonic the whole time.

@@nebula0697 Glad that helps. For my mind its the easiest way to spot play a mode if someone asks... Play Bb Mixolydian mode if might be easier to sort out in your head using LIMDAPL. Start with Bb then reference the mnemonic in your head to know that is Eb major starting on Bb. Assuming you know your Circle of 4ths by heart. Alway start the mnemonic at the "ionian = I" verses L for lydian. Lydian is on ramp to the Ionian :)

@@winddealer1 Yes, I'm starting using it as of today :-). I dabble in both guitar and piano so I can pictures the fourths or fifths in my head pretty quickly. Theory is so great because I started without it and sort of discovered the diatonic system by just playing around on the piano but then quickly realized most songs didn't adhere strictly to it and when I wrote progressions I certainly didn't. So to then find the "rules" that govern breaking the confines of the diatonic system is just awesome. Maybe a bit off topic, but it's another thing that wonderful circle is good for.

@@nebula0697 Interesting how the Guitar community seems to embrace the Circle of 4ths practice workflows and the Keyboard community seems to be more Circle of 5ths oriented. It is simply perspective after all, but from a Chord Progression perspective it seems more "natural" to follow the 4ths circle for me. To each their own, no right or wrong way, after all it is an art and a matter of what resonates with your "self".

Brilliant! 1st video I've watched on modes that actually makes sense to me. I mean I understood the other ones but could not understand the practical application of the theory.

Quite a brilliant exposition of modes technically but more importantly in an artistic vein. To think in modes shifting on every chord is impractical. I prefer to "hear" a flatted sixth or passing tones as such, but I appreciate the insightful clues to appropriating modes and their use. Thanks!

Tony💯▪ Played guitar and piano since 1972. Mainly an 👂 player. I never had heard of modes untill about 1994. A good ear player often is using them in songs like Autumn leaves or Fly me to the 🌙. Last 🌙, before watching this vid., I was thinking about going down from the C. (C Bb Ab G F Eb Db C.) Descend. Steps (W W H W W H) Still watching. More comments.

Tony, could you say in reference to the Bm7b5 that your scale is C Major with a flat 6 added. A.K.A. C Major 6th Diminished Scale or as Harris puts it the Diminished 6 Scale. Phrase your 5 chord as an E7b9#5 and the root as Am9 and you can play said scale over all three chords in your minor 251 as practice of this Be-Bopian-esque little wonder. N'est pa? This is an idea for beginners, not necessarily pros like you.

Tony, great video. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. Can you explain some of the modal techniques Pat Metheny might use in his solos? He has way of changing the “emotional” feel in his soloing. Here’s a great example: kzitem.info/news/bejne/t5V3zoN5hJyIdZw

Maybe not a subject that interests you personally? It helped a lot of people, everyone else seem very happy, which seems to indicate that it is in fact a great video. You should consider that not everyone is at the same level and that we all have our own ways of learning. Maybe it's not advanced enough for you, or maybe it is beyond your current level, which also often gives the impression that something is useless.
