When it comes to a guitarist deciding which chord to play and at what place on the neck to perform it - that choice is always better made if the guitarist has a lot of chord options.
Common chords (that every beginner and intermediate player know), are generally in root position. Basic chords like those sound balanced and work every time. However, guitar players do tend to play these chords for many years and eventually become rather bored.
Luckily, there is a way to quickly fix that boredom and all it takes is re-ordering the notes to create what’s called a “Chord Inversion.” This technique takes a note other than the chord’s root and places it as the lowest pitch tone.
The note in the lowest position is typically determined by the bass-line that we want. Some musical situations will better suit the use of the third chord tone in the bass. Other musical arrangements are better suited using a chord’s fifth.
This lesson will start by introducing a group of primary chords from the key of “C.” This group contains the most common chords of this key, (C, F, G, Am).
When these chords are performed in open position or if they are played as basic root position barre chords they can be almost too broad. That said, they are remarkably safe sounding and are popular amongst all levels of guitar player out there. But, this lesson changes all that by introducing inversion process.
