There are a lot of advantages to be had from visiting the Bluebell Railway early on a quieter running day. Join me and a surprising number of ducks on the platform at Sheffield Park as we watch the first train of the day to East Grinstead being prepared. The beautifully turned out (SECR) H Class locomotive No. 263 coupled to a rake of Maunsell carriages wakens the sleeping ducks as it is shunted into platform 1. Only the railway staff are about at this early hour, offering plenty a opportunity to get that perfect photograph. It’s time to board the train with a handful of other passengers for a trip along the line. At East Grinstead I met up with a good friend to spend the rest of the day visiting all the stations and riding both the trains in service on the day, the second one being formed of mainly Mk 1 coaches and the railway’s SR Maunsell Q-class locomotive No.30541. Being a quieter day, the staff and volunteers have time to share their experiences on the railway, offering an insight into the part they play in the day to day running of trains through the beautiful Sussex countryside.
