Good video this is the last good Nightmare film until New Nightmare I don't count FvJ that's more a hybrid movie. This movie has some clunky script moments like why does Freddy kill Kristen when he's logically going to need Kristen to pull more people into the dream world no way he could know Kristen would send her power to Alice. I was never bothered by him killing the dream warriors their powers never did anything to Freddy in part 3 except hold him off so with only 3 he should be able to kill them easily. The movie has some clunky spots but Lisa Wilcox is great Freddy is great and fun here with great one-liners and terrific special effects dream sequences like the movie theater. This film has great visuals and effects probably the best of the series, to be honest, some of the characters like Debbie the tough girl are a little one-note but the brother actor who plays Rick is a fun super likable character and the black nerd girl is good. The cast is overall good despite some one-note characters Alice is very likable and is a better actor than Heather as Nancy in Nightmare 3 or 1 shes also better developed. The ending has the best Freddy death of the series special effects-wise. Really the franchise could have stopped here this movie isn't great but it is a really good popcorn fun B movie 8os film. The studio made the mistake with Dream Child of trying to make a dark gothic Nightmare movie instead of keeping it fun as people wanted after Dream Warriors. I actually think Dream Child is decent though.

The best memory of this film for me, I went to the park near where I lived and they were filming the beach scene. I saw how they did all those tricks to making the film. From the glove in the water... sandcastle explosion...and more memorable... Freddy Krueger himself. Not Robert Englund, but Freddy in full makeup. He stared at me and yelled... 'STARING ISN'T POLITE!" He signed a poster I had for him to sign...

I think what some people don’t like about Alice is that she’s technically stronger than Nancy as she survived Freddy twice only Elm Street final girl to do so. But it’s obvious. She’s the Dream Master and Nancys only dream power was that she was fearless Wish they stuck with Alice and Jacob for Freddy’s Dead instead of making it a soft reboot and retconning all of Freddy’s lore that was developed. Like Freddy living in Nancys house making the dream sequences in 3 and 4 involving a rundown version of Nancys house seem like Freddy actually lived there instead of having his spirit tied to it because of his glove kept in the furnace. New meaning to “It’s not just a house, it’s his home.” Making it seem like it’s actually his home rather than a lair of some sorts. Also having Nancys house actually looking abandoned in real life in part 4 didn’t really set right as it was perfectly fine in Freddy vs Jason as that’s canon to both Freddy and Jason’s lore. Even if Freddy really was smart he doesn’t seem to be able to live a double life where he would be a loving father and husband and also a killer. The first movie established he was homeless of some sorts as when Nancy was walking around the boiler room towards the end she ended up in a room where there was a lot of household things like a makeshift bed and other items before Nancy finding Tina’s cross. Even if it was a dream that boiler room still would’ve existed. Most of the environments of Freddy’s dream worlds are real life places in the movie. Also Freddy’s Dead and later Freddy vs Jason retconned Freddy killing kids and being burned alive in a boiler room. They made it so he did all of it in his basement in his house. Also instead of the trail of gasoline burning Freddy the parents molotoved him (setting fire to alcohol)

Time travel through dreams still sounds like an untapped gold mine of game changing possibilities. The time cycle in this installment where Freddy plays with time and traps some of the characters in a recurring loop really played with the audience's head in a perfect mind bending way. Playing the same scene twice of them running out in an escape attempt was so convincing in terms of the narrative, I still remember half the sold out audience in my opening nite crowd turning around yelling up at the projectionist to change the film reel. That's an awesome fake out moment where the movie does the rare feat of transcending it's medium and effecting us on a reality level. Like somehow Freddy really had left the 2 dimensional film strip and jumped out into the real world f*cking with our showing and mind F*cking us. It's the closest feeling to what it might be like to actually expirence Freddy Krueger messing with us It's so genius, I must be dreaming....

I love the detail of the mirror full of photos, that everytime that someone dies, Alice removes a picture of that person, then being able to look at herself inside of it. A great character development that turns her from a shy daydreamer to a strong and proud girl. Beside this, I like this movie a lot, I like the visual look (the best in the series to me), the '80s vibe even if I'm from 1990s, it's fun to watch and it has a good sense of continuity with the previous movie. The Dream Master thing is basically a upgrade of the Dream Warriors wanting to be who they want in their dreams, and Alice says that she is in control of her dreams and that she becomes what she wants to be in there. It also has a good mix of creepy and horrorifc stuff and entertaining and "pop" moments, and there is no wonder that is known as the MTV "Nightmare On Elm Street" movie.

I think it gets shit on because people are butthurt about Nancy dying and saying 1 3 and New Nightmare should be the actual series. Also towards the later movies people are more so rooting for Freddy. I agree killing Nancy off was unnecessary but they didn’t know they were gonna make more sequels and Wes was fine with ending it at 3. He didn’t even plan for anything happening after the first one.

I'm glad I found this review of Nightmare 4 The Dream Master, you deserve all the praise for putting such a well-put together anthology to this awesome film. Nightmare 4 is my personal favourite of the franchise because it represents the absolute peak of this franchise. If you really want to see introduce someone what Nightmare on Elm Street franchise is, show them this film. It has the best of all worlds: the plot structure of the Original with the false protagonist of Tina/Kristen then have the main character in Nancy/Alice; the amazing Nightmare visuals of Nightmare 3 that it continued and enhanced even. Alice Johnson as a heroine is likely the most relatable final girl of the franchise, in a way she's like Sidney Prescott, the 'weak first strong later' archetype is very inspiring, especially making the audiences rooting for her, and her story arc really is about one gaining confidence through personal loss. It has an amazing soundtrack, with mixture of 80s synth and gothic tunes and IMO the second best soundtrack in the franchise after 5. The cinematography and the camerawork is once again, peak, there are many amazing shots in the film including the chaotic pan shot before Kristen falls asleep, Kincaid's chase scene, and not to mention the brilliant practical effects, it really pushes into the arthouse horror category which 5 pushes it to the series' peak leve. It really puts the 'Nightmare' in the title. It also was the highest grossing slashers of the 80s, and now it was forgotten, people literally sleep on this one cause of the reputation of 1, 3 and New Nightmare being the only worthy ones. It deserves a second chance, massively. If Nightmare 2 gets a recent reappreciation, Nightmare 4 absolutely deserves that and more.

Thanks for your thoughts about the false protagonist and parallels of Kristen/Tina. I never considered that and only had a suspicion that Alice/Lisa Wilcox became the final girl because they couldn't have Patricia Arquette return for the Kristen role. How else would they explain deleting a sequence from the Never Sleep Again documentary between Freddy and Kristen if she wasn't going to be the lead moving forward besides the explanation of time consuming? I thought Nightmare 3 set that up pretty well for Kristen to take the lead moving forward but they probably didn't believe in Knight as a leading actress like a Jaime Lee Curtis/Halloween. I do however enjoyed the decision they made with Alice/Lisa Wilcox and obviously many other fans appreciate her importance to the franchise just as much as Nancy's/Heather Langenkamp. Love this movie since I saw it on a bootleg VHS tape of my brother's back in the late 80s and my 1st introduction to Freddy.

It doesn't make sense for Kristen to be the dream master. All she does is spread Freddy around like a virus. She was never in control, as where Alice simply never got the time to develop her powers. My only real criticism for this movie is that she doesn't ever actually use her powers to counter his until she reflects his evil back at him at the end. For instance, saving someone other than Dan by willing them awake, or making one of his attacks stop because she wants it to, albeit with a price of great exhaustion.

While part 3 is the better of the two, part 4 is still a big guilty pleasure favorite for me. The one thing I would have changed about it would have been to have Ricky be the one who makes it to the end with Alice, so that in stead of it being a boyfriend/girlfriend couple who were up against Freddy, like we´d already seen, it would have been a brother/sister couple in stead, which would brought a different element to the movie that we hadn´t seen before. That way it would also have felt like Alice had more on the line when we got to the end, if she was fighting to save someone who had been the most important person to her for her entire life up to that point, rather than a guy she was only just getting to know. Tuesday Knight is to me very under rated as far as her performance in part 4 goes, especially considering that she had a near impossible task in following up Patricia´s performance in part 3. You can say what you want about Patricia´s decision to leave the series, but looking at the kind of career she´s had since, you can´t deny that it was probably the right choice she made. I think that seeing how hard it had been for so many other young actresses from horror movies, even a big name like Jamie Lee Curtis, to get away from being boxed in as a scream queen and be accepted as more than that, might very well have been an influence on her decision too.

Interesting NOES5 the Dream Child is one of my favourites. 3, 4 and 5 form a nice 'Dream trilogy' and each of them really put the nightmare in the title of the film, 4 and 5 really got into the arthouse category and are so stylishly made I love them lol

Drowning Joey was the best way to nullify his dream power. Kincaid was able to get some shots in, but at the end of the day, physical attacks don't really hurt Freddy in the dream world. The fact that Freddy was still able to kill Kincaid only shows that he was afraid underneath the bragging and boasting.

I don't even mind that they killed the Dream Warriors survivors so early, as they needed to explore new characters and "push" the new outcomes, like in wrestling when a veteran has to loose to a younger talent to create a new star. Yes, that was rush, but you see Kincaid and Joey being some dicks in this movie, so you don't mind their loss, and the movie telss you that Kristen doesn't seem to have a real friendship with them, and it's more like a "duty team", as if they stick together only for consequence and to make sure Krueger stays dead, but true friendship feelings are gone

Around the 32:50 mark you flash on the 900 number and that it says it was 2.00 a call. That I can tell you is not true at all. My grandmother whooped me from one end of the house to the other because I racked up a 300 dollar bill to that number (I was 9 at the time). Now how much of that 300 was really me and the Freddy number I'll never know. This was during the time when you only called outside your area code after dark because the rates were lower. But I'll always remember that butt whooping and the reason why. Edit: I called my mother and confirmed. First off, vivid memory for her. She remembers her mom reaming her out on that one. 😂 And she said it was $9.99 initially followed by a dollar amount per minute. And apparently, I called it a lot until I got caught. Anyway, it definitely wasn't 2 dollars a call. lol

Dan was HOT. Let's face it. That was the main reason I loved this film. I wish they would've shown him more shirtless at school though. Danny Hassel was the guy to be in the 90's. He was the poster boy for all guys back then. They then showed him shirtless in part 5 which was nice right next to the swimming pool.😁😁

I dont see why ppl think 3 is the best, I think its this one...most arguments I see are "it started going downhill with 4 because 4 started the comedy corny stuff" I think 3 is more corny...sure Freddy has more 1 liners in 4.. but 4 didn't have a kid turn into fkn wizard and I actually thought the actress playing Kristen was actually better and more believable in 4 imo i never liked the one im 3 and i just watched them both lastnight and still dont same with joey and kincaid..theyre not in 4 aslong but i feel their lines and acting Was better in 4 alice is also great...plus the soundtrack was miles better 4 to me is peak freddy...the dog pissing to resurrect freddy is pretty weird though, but watching freddy mold together was cool as hell and those camera shots of freddy in the junkyard barely showing his face in distance in the shadows is top notch

I totally respect that! I personally think most of the series is pretty good, the only truly awful ones are Freddy’s Dead and the remake. Dream Child has problems but isn’t totally irredeemable. Even Freddy’s Dead has some cool ideas but is too wacky to be scary or take seriously. The remake is just utterly soulless and is truly a “nightmare” in the worst possible way.

Freddy's Dead was the WORST. It was so sad that they spent all that money on 3D glasses for only 10 minutes of screen time. What a waste of marketing money. The whole film would've been better in 3D had it been the WHOLE MOVIE...not just 10 minutes at the end. The script made NO SENSE, Roseanne Barr was in it, and this whole thing about him having a daughter totally ruined it. He's the son of a hundred maniacs....HELLO?!?! I agree with you. Freddy's Dead was the WORST in the series. Part 5 was not scary at all. I wasted my allowance to see that junk. Now I see why people hated Freddy's Dead. What a waste of money and time. Part 4 was the best in my opinion.
