“We were naive but hard headed. We are what we are today because of that well-known, pitchfork-wielding Devil filling a bucket from a dye-loaded barrel… kind of what we were also doing in that backyard back then!”
What does a Footwear brand from the 20th century and Grog have to do with one another? The answer is one that may surprise you, the series of events that led to their intertwining story is one of necessity, coincidence, and luck or even mistake and one that has laid the paving for anyone who uses the graphic sign in its purest form.
What if that special something hadn’t happened? This question raises itself whenever we talk about the journey and development of Nero D’Inferno Chronicle Edition.
The story starts with a dye made for leather shoes, that managed to connect a community of people who saw something other than a dye purely to regenerate boots, a mouth-to-mouth movement so raw and authentic, it could only be achieved by something rooted in the underground scene.
What if, in the early twentieth century, the streets hadn’t been so dusty and damaging to leather shoes? Perhaps Mr. Pietro Rossi would never have seen the need to create a dye strong enough to revitalize worn-out leather.
And what if, more than half a century later, no one had thought to use that powerful dye to tag every surface that came into view? Or even then to later share that discovery with, for example, their crew members. It would of course be completely illogical, if not impossible, to attempt to trace it back to that first person who used a shoe polish to write on the street, unaware of the shockwave that such a simple action would set in motion. I imagine him, bored, waiting for a bus at the bus stop, pulling out an old Pilot from his pocket, newly refilled with Nero D’inferno dye and slam his tag on the bus shelter getting stunned by the outcome.
And let’s face it, back then, everyone was intrigues by a “phenomenon”, so much so that they had to be a part of it just to fit in. Maybe it wasn’t anything profound or worthy, maybe it was simply CIAO - hello , a word that (dis)graced every wall throughout Italy in the 90’s, one adopted by wannabes who would write it anywhere in order to try out their tools. But somewhere in that tangled web of events lay the root that would grow into an ever-evolving saga.
While the shoe-dye trick was on its way to stain the subways all over Europe, the licence holders of Nero D'Inferno’s chemical compound had to change the recipe to make it less toxic, modifying its special durable properties. This change brought Nero D’Inferno to become even a better product for the original purpose but much to the disappointment of many in the graffiti field...
