You ever run across any black bears out there in the backwoods? Reason I'm asking is I encountered one a few days ago in a rural residential area in Mason County. Popped out into the road about 40 yards ahead of me. I was going slow up an incline otherwise I'd have practically ran into him if I'd been going faster down a descent. I got off the bike, he stopped and looked at me for 2 or 3 seconds and went running off along the road in the other direction. You ever worry about that kind of thing while you're out there?

Sorry my late reply! Yeah, I have seen a black bear once. My encounter was somewhat similar to yours. From what I have read and heard from people, black bears wont mess with you unless threatened and generally don't need to be worried about.

What size tires were you using and what is minimum you recommend?

Sorry for my late reply! I prefer big tires. In my opinion there isn't much you lose by going bigger. I have 48c tires at the moment and love them. For rough gravel roads and getting deep in the woods, big tires make a huge difference. I'd recommend 45-48mm if your bike can fit them. But if you are riding smoother gravel roads you can go smaller and it would be fine also

Lame. Sorry about that. Yeah I think we do have ticks here in the northwest, but they aren’t as common as over there. I haven’t heard of anyone I know getting a tick around here
