The last train is nearly due, The underground is closing soon, And in the dark deserted station, Restless in anticipation, A man waits in the shadows. His restless eyes leap and scratch, At all that they can touch or catch, And hidden deep within his pocket, Safe within its silent socket, He holds a colored crayon. Now from the tunnel's stony womb, The carriage rides to meet the groom, And opens wide and welcome doors, But he hesitates, then withdraws Deeper in the shadows. And the train is gone suddenly On wheels clicking silently Like a gently tapping litany, And he holds his crayon rosary Tighter in his hand. Now from his pocket quick he flashes, The crayon on the wall he slashes, Deep upon the advertising, A single worded poem comprised Of four letters. And his heart is laughing, screaming, pounding The poem across the tracks rebounding Shadowed by the exit light His legs take their ascending flight To seek the breast of darkness and be suckled by the night.

It remains their best song for me, no Mrs. Robinson or Sounds of Silence beats it. Hauntingly beautiful, tells interesting story and expresses so much love in 2 minutes! When I listen to it, I want to forgive everyone who wronged me, go out on the street and hug a random person :^ )

the GREATEST synchronized voices ever seen or heard in a duo. There was a magic that followed them and radiated boundlessly forth becoming sound and an impercievable light, while they were on stage. they could never be replicated nor should they be, the attempt would be futile and in vain truly it would be Insulting. No two men could ever have reach such a state of perfection singing Folk music again and never before was it seen and certainly never recorded. Flawless.

I'm almost certain Paul Simon said it was a dirty word. They were doing a photo shoot and noticed somebody had randomly sprayed or written the word "fuck" on the wall. This is Paul Simons imagining of how it took place. Masterfully done though. However you can take whatever meaning you like best and apply it to the song.

It seemed that as a young man, Artie was very shy? But then, it looks as if Simon was shy too, but still the more dominant of the two. I love these two so much, and wish them nothing but good. Wish too, that they would put stupid differences and egos, aside, and remember the good things that had brought them together in the first place.

"A Poem on the Underground Wall" is a song written by Paul Simon, first released as a recording on the Simon and Garfunkel album Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme. The boxed set Old Friends includes a live version of the song, prefaced by an story from Garfunkel about its origin: he explains that a photo shoot for the cover of the album Wednesday Morning 3 A.M. was ruined because the subway wall they wanted to use as a backdrop had obscenities written on it. Dont read to much into songs.

*grin* I was sooo pleased with myself when, as a teen, I figured out the poem... Ran into the kitchen to tell my folks (who turned me on to the music...) that I'd solved the mystery (they always claimed to not know what the song meant) and asked if I could tell them... I think they are still laughing about it to this day.

I think it's less to do with controversy over the word or even the political context and more to do with the methodology of the graffiti-'artist' and his single-mindedness. The focus on the task. I suppose the song gives a voice and 'face' to these otherwise anonymous characters. Favourite line 'seek the breast of darkness and be suckled by the night'. Paul Simon undoubtedly one of the greatest lyricists in the English language.

I recently replaced my S&G vinyl with CD versions, and I have to tell you... I had forgotten how much I loved this song when I was 14. I was amazed that I could still sing along riding in the car. My daughter is now 14... she sat in the car and rolled her eyes the whole time. Couldn't help it... S&G are imprinted on my brain, and the songs are even more relevant now, in the Era of Drumpf.

Respectfully, what do you you call "Sound of Silence", "The Boxer", "I Am a Rock", "My Little Town"? In fact, I'd argue most of their songs embrace the essence of loneliness, hate, and depression... Of course there's love, too. I think the reason their music is so great is the tremendous though and meaning behind the lyrics, the outstanding complimenting vocals, and their unique repertoire of eclectic music. Each song is unique in melody, verse, and feeling, and speaks straight to the soul.

Was it a dirty word? What swear words have the meaning, power, and depth that poem can contain? I think this four letter word could be a number of things. The song is clearly about a man who is planning on attempting suicide yet he waits for the last train as he doesn't want to delay others (selfless). He's holding a crayon which probably belonged to his child. the heart pounding is symbolic for life that he found renewed. Maybe "Love" was what changed his mind and what he wrote?
@thebananarepublican

It was indeed. Art talks about it on a live album of theirs. What swear word? It has plenty of meaning, power, and depth. If not, no one would make a fuss about it. Not love, but close.

Artie tells the story here: kzitem.info/news/bejne/pG-pvZ2rkJ9kaqw So yes, it was a dirty word. Or, in Art's more poetic way of describing it: "written there (on one of the pictures that was taken for their Wednesday Morning album), rather legibly, was (..) the all-familiar suggestion. And rather beautifully illustrated as well." When I first heard the song, I too thought it was about a man contemplating suicide. But I don't even think this is what Paul meant. Art said somewhere else that the song - and I'm paraphrasing here - "handled the theme of New York subway wall writing, but in a rather unique way". Paul obviously created this ominous atmosphere in the song, so it wouldn't surprise me if he deliberately planted the thought that the man might be there to commit suicide, or even to hurt others. But I do not believe we are to believe that this is indeed what he was there to do. He was there to write on the subway walls, and that idea is making him nervous but he is also deriving soms sort of pleasure from it. And Paul, I think, had sort of the same feeling about this song, where he is deliberately misleading us into thinking the man is down there for * something * far more nefarious than that.

@knoxrox167 not necessarily. your only looking at the vague outlook on it. about hippies, and just because they were about peace and love, doesnt mean that the music was always about that.... if you really listen to all of the songs by an artist.you will learn to find that music was played and written through every emotion. it kind of irritates me that you would say something like that too, because it kinda shows me that you are stereotypically saying that. wierds me out.
