Hi, Mark! I hoarded some Palmolive Shave Sticks. Just those sticks would last me a long, long time lol. I like Super Speeds a lot. As to your question, I use a combination of lengths of strokes. That TV Special would be a nice addition to my den.

Palmolive always get thin on third pass. It's not the best soap out there. Shorter and repeating strokes is a necessity if you have hard stubbles. Long strokes doesn't work at all. Wish you a great weekend 🌞

That sounds like a challenge, to get a great big thick lather on the last pass. No, of course it's not the best soap, but I'm enjoying it. Ah, I see - short strokes for hard stubble or where the stubble might be the same but the skin is more tender. Now, that makes perfect sense. Thanks buddy. I hope you're well. All the best to you.

Hi Mark, isn't it great when you buy a distressed looking vintage razor and restore it to its former glory. I find it so satisfying and it's testament to how well these old razors were built that we can clean them up decades later and discover that they still deliver a fantastic shave. I'll pass on the excellent giveaway from Paul as I already own a boxed TV Special. It'll be a wonderful prize for whoever gets it. Always look forward to your videos, Mark. Keep up the good work.

Hi Derek. It is terrific when you manage to bring a razor back to it's former glory and I've been lucky recently to get a few razors at good prices which seems rare these days, at least on eBay. That's a good question do you prefer shorter movements or longer movements with a razor? I guess mix them up, probably no set pattern. Sometimes against the grain when the razor wants to jump or something I might do shorter ones. Remind me if I have a riding lawn mower and some really tall grass I'm trying to pull forward then hit the clutch and then pull forward and clutch it again.lol

Hi, I enjoy using yout channel.. It would be super cool if you can give the actual blade an aggressive score out of 10.
@FriendshipShaving
4 жыл бұрын
Hi George. To my knowledge, a razor blade is not normally graded in terms of aggression. It is the razor itself that determines the aggressive of a shave and that is primarily determined by angle of the blade; the size of the blade gap; whether the razor has positive exposure and how much blade exposure there is. One razor blade will therefore be entirely different in two different razors. For example, a Mühle R41 and a Gillette Tech - one is an aggressive razor the other is mild. Cheers.

Unfortunately its true, Polsilver is out. Just few days ago, one shaved with 'Super Iridium' (Blade name), made in Russia n both the shaver n myself were thinking, its Polsilver, just another makeup. Not to my knowledge, anyone else used the super iridium wording, except that Gillette factory in St. Petersburg. Myself do use long strokes for cheeks n neck, but those areas with curled growth (for me the neck), short strokes work best. Cheers mate.

Interesting question about choppy v longer strokes, Mark. I was also wondering about this as I noticed I do the same as yourself: longer strokes on "easier" areas, shorter strokes on my more sensitive neck. But, what I recently discovered from another video was that my neck strokes needed to be made at a shallower angle and that enables me to have longer strokes now. I think it's very easy on the neck to slip into an angle that is closer to 90°and that causes problems. Have a good weekend! 👍😊
@FriendshipShaving
4 жыл бұрын
That makes sense, doesn't it? To use longer strokes where it's easier. Johnny pointed out that for a coarse growth (Desperate Dan) short strokes are pretty much essential. I wouldn't say I had massively coarse hair but where the skin is softer it seems easier. That is a good point about slipping into a 90° angle on the neck. You too, mate. Have a great weekend. I can't it's here so quickly! 🙂

Simple, the reason I'd like to win/have this TV Edition Super Speed is that is unique, in my opinion, in a "Ironic" way in that it does not have the Special Colored Tip(s) or Blade Gap Openings, it does not have a Limited Edition Gold Plating, it does not particularly stand out from the Crowd at Gillette with one exception, it was the razor of the "Gillette Cavalcade of Sports" and produced with vertical knurling as opposed to the bi lateral or checkered knurling of the typical Super Speed. More importantly, for me, it comes from an era of TV and Radio productions which quite different from what we know today and to have a object that is a tangible reflection of that time which happens to be item that I collect and use would be fantastic. And that's my entry. Thanks. ;-)

Hi Mark, another great shave. It's funny that you asked about short, choppy razor strokes v longer stokes as I've just watched a recent video by Geofatboy about slow strokes v faster strokes. I tend to use short, slow strokes so my next shave will be longer, faster strokes and I will keep my styptic pencil handy! Another beautiful job on the razor...I find long strokes to be very effective and use them where I can, but I have to be careful. I think they encourage the use of more pressure--both to keep the razor on the skin while going over contours and because the speed of the motion is slower, so more pressure is required to cut the whiskers. Shorter strokes allow you to use a very light touch (speed makes up for less pressure)--that's my theory , anyway, for why they work better in more sensitive areas.
@FriendshipShaving
4 жыл бұрын
The shorter stroke with lighter pressure feels very much like a buffing motion, to me anyway. I find I'm more successful with the long strokes going with the grain; it feels very comfortable, while shorter strokes feel more comfortable going against the grain. Thanks for your thoughts - I find it interesting but perhaps I need to get out more 😅 Cheers.

@@FriendshipShaving Short strokes, I think help me keep more consistent the angle of razor head over curved areas such as chin/jawline. I am a fan of the Palmolive shave stick. In fact, it is the only shave soap I own. I decided to start with it, because it's inexpensive, smells like soap, is tallow based, and is really intended for face lathering. I don't own a bowl, and wanted to keep it simple. It is really ideal for travel. I am saddened to hear that PolSilver Super Iridium blades are going out of production. Where did you hear this? They are my favorite blade so far. I got ahold of a box of 250 of them, new old stock, branded Wizamet from the 1990's. Incredibly smooth, sharp, and long lived. I hate it when I find a good product, and then when time comes to replenish, it is no longer in production. But, apparently, that is what is going to happen.

It is a great soap. It was one of the first soaps I bought and I decided to squash two pucks into a bowl - it seemed to on forever and ever. It was at least the whole year; I couldn't quite believe it. They were very cheap, at the time and they still are a bargain. I read the Polsilver SI news on a website, a little while ago now but it was dated 2016. I'm not sure if they did stop production or not. I couldn't verify the information or find anywhere else that talked about it. I definitely will buy some of these old Polsilver stainless.

@@FriendshipShaving Last I heard, I think from Matt Pizarsic (sp?) at Razor Emporium, was that Gillette no longer had a distribution agreement on PolSilver blades, but that they were still in production in Russia. It seems, according to availability on that auction site that PolSilver blades are distributed in Baltic states, namely Bulgaria. They don't seem to have any sort of distribution channel in the EU or North America. They were, as you said, originally a Soviet era Polish made blade, distributed throughout the soviet sphere of influence. In the 90's production was moved to Russia. I am of the impression that the plant in Russia is not controlled by Gillette (I believe they have partial ownership, not control), but that Gillette has distribution rights for many Russian made de blades; some of which bear the Gillette brand, and many which do not.

When he switched to electric in the 80's, I did as well. We never considered keeping the old gear. Shame! I've wanted to get a vintage one for the memories. Hey Mark nice video although i don’t like the particular blades. My grandfather used to have one the same but it’s been lost, and i didn’t think i would find one again. It has a sentimental value to me

Would love to add this to my small but growing collection of vintage Gillettes. They all deliver and any of them would qualify as my desert island razor.

I have tried many different razors in pursuit of the perfect shave but have not got a vintage Gillette and it will enhance my shaving experience, 🤓
