I love this...born & raised in Edmonton of immigrant parents from Canton, China. I am 61 years old. My parents were very active in the Chinese community as long as I can remember. They were connected to many societies & clubs in Edmonton, their whole life in Edmonton. So proud of my own heritage. My parents were married in the Chinese United Church on 96 Street..just across the street from the Double Greeting restaurant. (When it was a sweet little white chapel church, my brother was married at that church too.) My Grandma ran a grocery store just down the street from where Double Greeting sits now, on the other side of the street...Jimmy's Bi-rite grocery store. It is now a parking lot. The first Chinatown was where Canada Place sits now. My Dad's restaurant was on that block...Ly Chee Gardens. My old stomping grounds. Spending Saturdays at The Dreamland theatre watching the Saturday matinee special. Cartoons & 2 movies for .50 & able to purchase a hotdog too. The theatre sat where the Conference centre sits now. Such great childhood memories. This is awesome. Thank you for sharing your experience with us. 👍😊

I'm 1/4 Chinese, we also went to Double Greeting in the 70's with my Chinese Grandpa. He used to visit the Chinese Benevolent Society.😊

I have been visiting China Town for over 40 years. Shopping and dining out. The pandemic, LRT construction, economy in general and perhaps neglect from the City of Edmonton’s perspective have beat so much of the life out of the area. The LRT construction is done now, although not running yet, COVID is better understood, the economy is sorting itself out (fingers crossed) and the COE has had their feet held to the fire and is moving, all be it slowly, in the right direction. Hopefully, we can all have a hand in helping bring the area back to life! Cheers!

Beautiful story. Great to show and tell such rich, meaningful and decorative history.

Sadly, the dying of Chinatown is happening in every North American city 😢
