➡️ Workshop presented by Dr Elizabeth Carter and Thérèse Harrison at The Icon Book and Paper Group 2021 Conference Mod Cons - Modern Conservation. Modern Constraints. Modern Conveniences
📜 X-ray fluorescence (XRF) spectroscopy is a ubiquitous tool in the analysis of cultural heritage objects and material and is commonly used as a first-pass tool for gaining an elemental understanding of the material composition. Instrumental advancements in portability, affordability, sensitivity and improved detection limits have given rise to the widespread use of portable XRF units in conservation labs globally and it is important to understand the possibilities and limitations of this accessible technology.
This workshop outlines the practical application of X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy while offering some basic theory, tips and tricks. This will include basic instrument setup and operation using handheld technology, important parameters for data collection and a brief discussion about data interpretation including differences between quantitative vs qualitative data. Important safety considerations associated with ionising radiation will also be addressed.
The presenters of the workshop are from Sydney Analytical, a Core Research Facility at The University of Sydney in Australia. Sydney Analytical’s Museums and Cultural Heritage node undertakes both routine conservation science analyses and pioneering research to develop new scientific protocols and methodologies to support the investigation, understanding, conservation and preservation of cultural heritage objects and materials.
