I'm extremely grateful for this excellent presentation which highlights perhaps the most mysterious period in the enigmatic life of Bobby Fischer. John Donaldson with his eminently listenable voice, deeply researched material, and balanced account has set an enormously high standard for any who wish to follow. Now that just leaves the strange life of Regina Fischer, Bobby's mother, any takers?

Magnus Carlsen drew Garry Kasparov when he was 12. He stated he had a winning position, but was nervous because he was facing Garry Kasparov. Yet, after Magnus became the world chess champion, a 12 year old beat him. With the advent of chess engines, there is an opportunity to play against harder opponents, and learn how to counter grand masters like never before. The question "what should I have done instead?" can now always be answered.

Endgame is a shocking book, its nothing but pure conjecture and offers not a single piece of empirical evidence that Fischer was mentally ill despite its sensationalistic title.

+MSK Chess I don't mean to be rude, but wouldn't you agree that Fischer's life-choices (after winning the world championship) would indicate serious mental illness? I'm not referring to his choice to not defend his title (that decision was, arguably, a principled one); I'm referring to the entire trajectory of his subsequent life - from his joining a cult and giving them his money, to eventually moving to the Philippines and becoming a deranged ranter on late-night radio... I realize that the movie didn't go into any of that, but if you check the historical record, I think you'd have to agree with the movie's conclusions. Stephen White

No i would not agree that it indicates any degree of mental illness. Fischer liked to read the Bible and was attracted to a certain religious message. This may be indicative of poor judgment of character in failing to see through the scams of his church and its leaders but its not indicative of mental derangement. One can in fact argue that its evidence of generosity and a certain innocence. Are we to seriously think that people who emigrate to the Philippines are in want of their mental faculties? Ranting against the hypocrisy of Israel or the USA might have a very valid basis none of which can be linked to any mental illness of any kind and infact may have a perfectly valid and rational basis.

+MSK Chess Well, he was absurdly anti-Jew, and from his quotes, highly anti-women, at least in the world of chess, but maybe otherwise too, (these two former points came from his mother and father issues) he became obsessed with war, Jews taking over the world etc in his later years; at such time he deeply hated U.S.A and became highly paranoid and so on, at the very least, this is irrational, some say schizophrenia (which is a mental illness), most aspects of his life infer many personality disorders. But I do agree with you, he clearly had a weird patch with the religious, he later found them to be scams and he left, so meh, but the rest is very strange and is at least irrational and a display of many personality disorders, I would not like to say that he had schizophrenia, most likely this is going too far, although just because it is not proven that does not mean it is not true, however, one would indeed need evidence in order to believe it, basic logic. However, to some degree he was a great man too, many say he was a kind child, his mother pushed him in front of the cameras - which he clearly hated and this shaped him poorly, a very lonely, troubled childhood he had and later he kicked his mother out of his life and did not see his family for many years, he died holding a picture of his mother and sister (both of whom died shortly before, at around the same time). When he took a stand to play chess even at the cost of the U.S sending him to prison could be seen as honest, brave and strong, he also had almost no life whatsoever outside of chess, from ages 6-29 as I understand it, therefore I try not to get into the man himself too much since, in truth, there is no Bobby Fischer the man, and of course based on his life-choices and our limited knowledge of him, it is unclear who the real Bobby Fischer was, in my mind there is only Bobby Fischer the chess player; he was chess; I may suggest the true life and sorrow of life and it is clear without chess he simply snapped. I am confused to why you are defending him so deeply however.

John Donaldson Thanks, John. Somehow I figured that out after posting. A good presentation. Thanks! I'll never forget the day I, as a young student at UW, tried to address Viktors Pupils in the Last Exit in Russian. Cannot reproduce the long list of expletives here. As legendary as Bobby Fischer was, you made the case -- his mom turns out to be quite a figure in her own right.
