I find myself in the heart of Romania. I visit Salina Turda, a disused salt mine turned amusement park, and Corvin Castle, one of the largest castles in Europe. There have been salt mines in the region of Turda since the Romans. That place is truly out of this world, and by far the strangest and most memorable touristic site I have ever visited. It hosts the only underground Ferris wheel in the world.
The pace of life and travel is perfect for me during this period in my life. I find wonderful legal free campsites and often stay in one place for 2-3 days. I see animals of many kinds, and of course I have to photograph them all. They are allowed to roam more freely than what I am used to in Western and Nothern Europe, and I much prefer how it’s done here.
At my last camp by the river I visit a few Dacian ruins (the third one of the Seven Wonders of Romania that I mention at the beginning of the video), but I don’t take any videos there. It’s incredible to try to imagine what life would have been here in the classical era, at the same time as the ancient Greeks and Romans lived.
Next I will head to the mountains and the highest paved road in the whole country. I am not used to mountain driving and I’m pretty nervous, but that will be an adventure for the next episode!
After this week I’m feeling much more comfortable in this country, and it’s feeling like home now.
I belong in this landscape.
