The belief that we cut grasses only in the spring has grown strongly. Some people believe that cutting grasses is even necessary, because without it they will die. In this case, tell us how all these grasses live in the natural environment? 🤔
Let's be honest. Cutting ornamental grasses is just a matter of aesthetics in case of low frosts in winter. Nothing will grow out of the dry parts anymore, nor will it interfere with the newly sprouting leaves and shoots. The only aspect is that they will litter in the winter-spring orkes, and when they begin their vegetation the dry parts will mix with the green ones (consequently, the green parts of the plants should mostly cover the dry ones).
Spring pruning has become established only because it is the safest scenario for grasses in general especially of foreign origin. The second factor is the hardening off, quality and condition of the seedling itself that you purchased. If it grew in the ground then, after rooting, propagated in pots on outdoor container gardens rather than in the warmth and shelter from the winds in plastic tunnels, it will endure much more and its survival percentage increases strongly.

It's hard here to give you a 1:1 indication of the ideal time to cut grasses. Pay attention to what climate zone you live in, check what frost resistance your grasses have and where/from whom you bought them. If the producer in question grows grasses in the aforementioned way, then there should also be no problem with them in your gardens.
When is it better to cut - spring or autumn?
Autumn - at the time when the grasses dry out in November-December (after the last season we have conclusions such that the vegetation of plants is prolonged by the warm autumn) you can undertake to cut them. This will prevent them from littering with dry plant parts and possibly seeding. A condition in favor of this timing is:
- good condition of grasses
- hardy varieties / species of grasses
- sheltered place from the wind also increases the comfort of overwintering plants
living in a warmer region of Poland
- seedlings have already been growing for several years in the garden and may have adapted to the prevailing conditions
- soil conditions are conducive to the germination of plant seeds (more permeable substrate)
- in the case of cold winters or pre-winter, it will be necessary to cover grasses that will be on the verge of frost resistance

Spring - if you don't have time for autumn and are not measured by the sight of dryness in the garden, then spring as much as possible can be the term of cutting. In addition to aesthetic value, cutting grasses in spring helps animals survive during the winter. Birds take dry parts of grasses to build nests and feed on grass grains, small rodents, insects and other small animals hide at the base of naturally covered with dry grass leaves. The condition that supports this term is:
to help animals survive
increased percentage of overwintering grasses
pampas grasses necessarily cut very late in the spring, or not at all if they are green with leaves
we do not worry if spring frosts will damage the grasses in any way

Most species wake up quite late after winter, but not all have this affliction. Among those that wake up quickly after winter are turf bold, holly reeds, fescues, swards or sesleria. Grasses that partially retain their green leaves (such as fescue) can be cared for in two ways. The first way is to comb out the withered leaves in the clump, and the second way is to cut (a little higher than for example miscanthus) here we leave about 10cm of the clump and cut the leaves with a knife for cutting bread. Why is it better with a knife and not secateurs or shears? Because in the case of fescue, which has very dense and fine leaves, secateurs or scissors are not able to cut more leaves and the cuts are not as even as with a knife on the whole plane of the plant.

Fertilizing ornamental grasses. This is usually done in the spring so that they have enough nutrients for a good start to vegetation. It is recommended to use fertilizers with low nitrogen content. This compound causes the plant to grow very quickly, but the shoots, due to the rate of growth, are limp and brittle at a later stage. You can use a natural fertilizer such as granulated manure. Spread it around the root ball and mix it with the soil so that the manure does not volatilize. Fertilize grasses once a year in the spring. Excessive fertilizer will reduce the attractiveness of the plant and cause the shoots to lodge.#OrnamentalGrassesCare #TrimmingGrasses #GardeningTips #GardenCare #ClimateChangeGardening #SpringOrnamentalGrasses #SpringGardeningTasks #FertilizingOrnamentalGrasses #FrostResistantGrasses #FallGrassCutting #GardenAesthetics #HardyGrasses #GardenEcosystem #PampasGrassCare #GrassFertilizers #Garden
