Hi! Thanks for the kind note. The prices for the Rollei 35S are high because ... 1. It's a Rollei 2. Of the production models, the 35S is the most desirable because it has the best lens. 3. It's a solid, well-built camera. 4. It's not prone to the problems that other old cameras have -- sticky shutters and light leaks. The shutter springs are especially strong. 5. There are quite a few collectors out there who buy them to put on a shelf. 6. It's unusual, but also easy to use.

@waitew Hi -- The battery operates the meter which, oddly, only operates in the auto mode, where you set the shutter speed and the camera sets the f-stop. When not in the auto mode, the camera will work as a mechanical camera, so, yes, it will operate without the battery. As for sunny 16 or a meter, I'd always go with a meter, but they're getting more scarce these days, and you can't trust an older meter for critical (slide film) work.

Hi @ad0331. All of the 35 S production was in Singapore. The early Rollei 35 production was in Germany, from 1966-70. All of the Rollei 35 variants from 1971 through 1980, including all of the "S" models, were made in Singapore.
@randallstewart175

Not so. The first 35S models were made in Germany before production shifted to Singpore. For example, if you pull up the old Modern Photography issue with the Rollei 35S test in it, they were testing a German made version. I've owned four versions, 2 35S and 2 35SE, all made in Singapore. There is literally no difference in overall quality for lens performance between the bunch and the few German 35S units out there. My first was a Silver Anniversary model, which has to be the ugliest Rollei 35 ever made. (Sold it to a Japanese dealer many years ago for a huge profit.

@jackthehatphoto I totally agree. Using it upside down with a flash is a real pain, and you'll need a quiet place to sit down when it's time to reload. But give it this much. When you're on a hiking trail in the Rockies with only a small backpack, it'll give you better color slides than anything else even twice its size.

You're right. I forgot about the little Minox. I tried to pick one up after production ended, but. alas, I waited too long. Maybe you should do a Rollei vs. Minox "smackdown" video someday. Still, for full-frame 35mm cameras, they're both amazingly tiny.

Right. The iPhone light meter app is spot-on, and the meter on a 40-year-old camera is often suspect anyway. If it's sunny out, shoot at f16 with the shutter set at the film speed.
@jburgie

@karmacpro Hi -- well, your shutter speed should be at least 1/60th or greater. Try pressing the camera against your face while you press the shutter release. Or, brace the camera and/or yourself against a tree, rock, parked car, etc. The Rollei 35 doesn't have a self-timer, which also can be used to steady the camera in some situations.

@waitew Hi again -- ignore my last reply -- i thought I was talking about another vid I did about a Canonet. Anyway, the battery only operates the meter, on the Rollei 35S - that's it. It will work fine without the battery; shutter it totally mechanical. The Minox and Olympus XA are both smaller but are plastic. The Rollei would be a contender for the smallest all metal body full frame 35mm but the Lomo I think is all metal as well and is smaller. But it's safe to say, it's the coolest small 35mm.

I used this camera quiet a lot.I have that one made in singapore. I think it is ok. the lens is not good as tessar that i have on a t5 yashica. i like it. it is smal as compact but is totally manual, it is great. It is a cool camera to have it. It is a bit slow to use it with the manual focus and you have pool the lens out.

Ahh...yeah, wide open you have to use a little care on that score, and maybe a tape measure for critical work. With practice, you can get pretty good at it. It's pretty forgiving when your subject is beyond 2.5 meters or so, and if you know the length of your arm extended, you can use that for close ups. Minimum focusing distance is .9m/3ft.

hey do u need to pop out the lens and twist it in order to actually advance the lever?
@jburgie
8 жыл бұрын
+carp fever Hi. Yes, in part because you can't collapse the lens unless the shutter is cocked in the first place. The shutter springs are strong enough to remain cocked all the time, unlike many other cameras. Also -- I just tried this -- the film advance lever won't advance without the lens twisted in place, either.

I recently bought a rollei 35 in bargain condition from KEH.com and a m9 adaptor for the battery so i can get the correct voltage. I popped in the battery and the needle moved and seemed to read accurate but when i went out in the sun the needle immediately started to wiggle back and forth till it went all the way back and it hasn't moved since then... :| does anyone know what to do? is it dead or can it be fixed? i have a film loaded so can't check the battery until i'm done shooting that roll. Thanks for help

First, you unload the film and remove the battery and M9 voltage regulator. The meter itself can be defective. A prior battery failure may have leaked acid on the wiring and damaged the power lead to the battery (my problem). The M9 unit may have failed. The battery may have been old and died. There may be a bad electric contact somewhere in the batter/M9/battery compartment. You just have to test each option with a voltage meter. Odds are that you have a bad electrical contact or a failed M9. These voltage regulators are poorly made. (I had a $50 one from Gossen fail at one year of age after two uses.)

Thanks for this. I just picked up a pretty mint condition (minus the natural dust/weathering on the body) 35 SE on eBay and since I have not been in the film game much at all, this helps out a lot. What about the battery? I read somewhere that there are new non-mercury batteries that work out that should be pretty easily obtainable. Can't wait to start sharing some of my manual film photos.
@randallstewart175

The bulk of the 35 models use a 625 mercury cell battery, which you cannot get and is not the easiest to replace. The voltage of that battery (1.35 v) is the reference for the meter, so if you use a similar battery with different voltage, the meter reads wrong. The last two models, the 35SE and 35TE, have a different meter technology, which gives readouts by diodes in the viewfinder. They were designed to use a 5.6 volt mercury cell battery (now also gone), however the electronic display requires that a voltage regulator be included in the meter circuit, so you can put 6 volt batteries (easy to find) in the SE and TE, and the camera metering will work just fine with no user adjustments.

I have a SE and I love it. But it feels so fragile, that I'm always worried that it breaks.
@randallstewart175
6 жыл бұрын
The 35SE is exactly the same build as this and other Rollei 35 bodies. They are not as fragile as most other small cameras, which are mostly made with plastic bodies which crack open if dropped hard. The soft brass exterior body panels pick up dings if hit, as shown here. The SE is a best choice version of the 35 along with its brother, the TE, because the light meter takes batteries which are still available. Any common 1.5 volt battery which fits into the camera will be auto regulated to the required 1.35 volts. I use a modern lithium 625 battery which works perfectly.

@gjvtorres Those Wein "Air" cells are unreliable after a few weeks, I've found. I use the alkaline 625 battery (available at Radio Shack and on-line) and compensate for the higher voltage (1.5 vs 1.35) by setting the film speed to about half of what your film is. Take a couple test rolls before shooting anything critical.

@karmacpro Hi -- Well, just because the camera came with a new battery doesn't mean it's a good one. Those Wein "air" cells, for example,are notoriously unreliable. Drop in a new alkaline battery that's been confirmed on a voltmeter and try again. Also scrape the battery contacts a little.

Great lens, great company but this design is just terrible… what were they thinking? Having the shutter speeds and aperture on the front of the camera, when it's not a waist level finder is ergonomically terrible. Focusing and no viewfinder seems awful. Goes to show how much cameras evolved… although hey I'm sure some people love the camera and I can't judge.

They certainly sacrificed some user-friendliness to put the camera in a very tiny package. It's not quite as difficult to use as it seems in this video -- until you put a flash on it and have to hold it upside-down to avoid creepy-looking shadows.

Tessar lenses are superior to the low end Sonnar. Mine is a made in Germany original. Not an Asian made sloppy second with a cheaper lens.
@randallstewart175
6 жыл бұрын
They'll let anyone in here! The Sonnar, a 5 element design is optically superior to the 4 element Tessar. Not so much as you'd notice at more distant subjects, but particularly focused closer in. The Sonnar on the Rollei 35 tested back in the day as optically equal to the Leitz 50mm 2.0 Summicon, which was, till then, unmatched. The vast majority of the various 35 models were made in Rollei's Singapore factory, along with all of its other 35mm SLR. They have been tested over the years as equal in quality to the early German made cameras.Since the only difference is the location stamped on the removable back, when a "Germany" 35 dies, the dealers will pull the back, substitute it on a "Singapore" version, and mark up the price by 50%. So, do you really have a German version?

I love the look of the Rollei 35 but I must say it's one of the most stupid designs ever. Everything is different and extra awkward. It's a downright pain to use. Nevertheless, it's an important part of photographic history and the world would be poorer without it.
