It's funny how as a black guy people call me too white for listening to shoegaze and dream pop, when these guys were the one's to coin the term "dream pop" in the first place. It sucks that ppl assume blacks can't enjoy alternative music when they actually had a big role in pioneering and influencing it, bands like these should get more accolades but are relegated to pure footnotes, these guys said in an interview that when they performed ppl expected them to play reggae and were shocked when they started unleashing bouts of feedback.

Kevin shields has stated that they weren't influenced by cocteau twins, based on the production and sound that they don't saw it interesting, in the other hand a r kane for me are in a way better than mbv in terms of ideas and sound

Some of younger 90s bands mentioned AR Kane and MBV as influences in interviews. That's how I found out about AR Kane. I'm glad they did!

Part of the magic of A.R. Kane was the group's co-producer, Ray Shulman. He was a former member and the bassist of the then-obscure English band Gentle Giant (1970-1980), a progressive rock group who were recognized for the highly eclectic and technical arrangement and sound owing to each member's capacity to perform a wide array of instruments beyond the rock's standard, some of them were highly versed in music theory, alongside the group's own stated "mission" to raise the bar beyond what's considered as acceptable in the popular music convention at the time, despite at the expense of their own popularity.

@@dklustick Look up the video “Loveless: How shoegaze became shoegaze” by Trash Theory here on KZitem. There’s a section on AR Kane and their influence on shoegaze. That’s how I ended up here. MBV are specifically mentioned in the bit about AR Kane, and it also suggests that AR Kane came up with the term “dream pop” to describe their music, which is a genre closely related to shoegaze.

They did break new ground. You should listen to their first few EPs if you haven't already. Those are my favorites by them. I heard they were pretty good live, I can't say for myself but I love my MBV loud. It's part of their sound. They are almost like a drone band, Kevin's guitar playing is all about chord progression. He really is quite good at what he does. I understand the loudness of their shows can be a bit pretentious but I've always wanted to experience it. "Another man's trash..."

Well, I never assumed you didn't hear their early stuff I actually was going to put that but I didn't really have space. I want to suggest stuff to you but you aren't really making it fun for me with that last comment. You know a lot of people like to use the phrase "rip off" to describe a band's "sound" but that doesn't mean a musician is without their influences. Why can't we just leave it at that? Also, I know from experience that years can change your perspective, in music especially.

It was kinda like an asshole wink tho lol. Idk, it's hard to even say what breaking ground really is in music. That is somewhat left to opinion too. Is it "Who did it first?" or "Who did it right?", you feel me? Ok so I'm gonna actually gonna send you a small list in message form then, you can tell me who they rip off lol I'm interested.
