If you really wanted to test the ‘radiator’s effectiveness, you have the tools available to you to do so. The thing displays the temperature of the air coming through it. Do something intensive for a set period of time with the radiator in place and active. Then, open it up, unplug the fan, reassemble it, and repeat the process. If it helps move more air through the Switch, then it will help with cooling, because more cool air will flow over the heat sink(s) over the same period of time. If it doesn’t help move more air, through, it will do nothing. If, somehow, it *hinders* air movement, the Switch will be warmer, because the air moving across the heat sink(s) will have more time to warm up.

Fair warning, people should just avoid these. Your consoles are already designed to run cool and making them cooler isn't going to make your games run faster. All your doing with these intercoolers are increasing the power draw on your system and shorting the lifespan of your capacitors and your drawing in more dust with the increased airflow, just don't use them. The best thing you can do is clean out the dust if it ever does actually overheat, which doesn't really happen anymore, it was only ever a problem on the launch Xbox 360's.

Here is what I have done. I put a small metal fan that is not much taller than the switch itself and point it at the dock from the side. I have a thermometer that also checks surface temperatures. So after playing the same game on the unit in handheld mode (no fan) and in the dock (with and without a fan) I checked the screen temperature in various places. The result was that with the fan while in the dock (taking it out to check the temp) the switch would have the same temperature as when used in handheld mode; without the use of the fan while in the dock the temperature would be about 4 to 5 degrees higher. I figure if I can keep the temperature down (while in the dock) to the same as when using it in handheld mode that can't be a bad thing and didn't require anything other than a small fan to accomplish.

So I'm into keeping hardware cooler. Few issues with the video. The reason why the air is cool. 1. The fan was set to max, 2 the internal heatpipe is over designed so the switch isn't to warm in handheld mode. My android tv (nvidia shield 2nd gen)has the same cpu and is well cooled by a tiny metal heatsink. First gen shield had a copper heat pipe too but nvidia saw they didnt need it. 2. You said the switch is cooler to the touch but the fan doesnt work. It works better than the other fan. The switch doesn't produce enough heat for warm air to come out when it's set to max speed. The heatsink fins at the end of the copper heat pipe right under the exhaust fan( fins are coated in black) faster moving air provides more cooling. This will work great for hacked overclocked switches. They make these for laptops and a good ones work. Like this one. It doesnt need to interact with the internal fan because it's a helper fan. Now that back cover one might help a little. The docks electronics get hot and is cooled by the airflow of the switch. There are vent holes in the back. The right vent closest to the cpu cooler in the switch gets pre warmed air by the dock components. By having increased airflow it would help with that issue. Sadly the dock helps the switch get super warm, but not to overheating temps. I still liked the video overall.
@anastassogoldschmied

10:54 But the "Top Part" of the Switch is one of the main cooling parts, because on the top part are the cooling finns from the heat-pipe. When it cools down the top finns, it also cools the heat-pipe (metal transfers heat). So it can cool the switch in the inside. Not to mention the air that needs to come through the entire Switch.
@Dethneko

As I've always understood it was the best way to cool your computer or other electronics was to cool the entire room. As I've always understood it, cold air going in is going to have the best chance of cooling the inside while also helping to cool the outside. There's a reason any well designed server room is really cold is all I'm saying. If anyone knows more about this, I'm happy to learn.

You would have better luck just having a small desk fan blow air across the back of the switch. I used to do that with my old Asus 2-in-1 laptop when I would play games on it because it would get REALLY hot and thermal throttle. The fan eliminated my thermal throttling issues and gave me better FPS, but of course this was on a laptop that was never made for gaming. You wouldn't get as big of a performance increase (if any at all) doing that with the switch, it would just make it run a little cooler.

I am surprised that Nintendo didn't incorporate their own cooling fan into their Switch dock, that's linked to the Switch's cooling system. There is enough room as its mostly empty space inside the thing. Most people who have problems with their Switch overheating, usually have a lot of other electronic gear next to it giving out heat, the trick is to have your switch with lots of space around it/out in the open so it can get proper airflow and not have it sit inside a cupboard or TV stand next to DVD players, other consoles etc. Doing this cuts down the odds of your Switch overheating and shutting down, In my experience. Maybe Nintendo will release a premium accessory, that is a replacement dock with cooling installed at some point?

Same principle as a push-pull configuration on an actual radiator, putting 2 fans in series helps with air pressure, so when there is resistance airflow actually increases. That being said, the fan inside the switch seems to be temperature controlled, so if the second fan is effective, temperature goes down and the fan inside slows down, making it far less effective. Would not use it on mine based on the mounting method alone.

Bought one of those DIY dock shell replacements a couple days ago, came in the mail today (the J&TOP one). It wasn’t too difficult to do, though the ribbon cable for the dock connector didn’t sit flush at first and I had to adjust it then quickly close the shell. I had a small issue once I tried to connect it up though, as my Skull&Co. grip case prevented my Switch from connecting. A solution I found though was to cut the TPU material where the Switch lays on the dock off the case, and afterwards it fit like a glove, so now I have my portable “Official” Nintendo Switch dock and it feels pretty good. One other thing, and this may have been covered before, but because it uses the official dock motherboard, it will not work in tabletop mode because the screen when docked originally is mostly covered up save the top to give you the battery indicator. Therefore the motherboard is not designed to display anything on the Switch’s screen while docked, and you will still need to use a third party dock for that functionality. Skull&Co.’s dock seems to work pretty well for me, though I know some people have worries about Switches being bricked so it’s completely up to the user to go that route.

And having a fan behind the switch works very well while docked. I have a 120mm computer fan behind all 4 of my switches and the temps are night and day.

Hopefully someone could make a internal fan that could move more air for the switch, maybe one that lets you choose different levels of rpm, would be interesting.

The Switch internal fan will always be most essential to cooling, but if the Switch case gets hot, and an external fan cools it, that's still worth something.

is it just me or does that radiator's fan look like the fan for the ps2 slim

A lot of views explain that the Radiator RDS-2827 either does whatever it wants and will turn on and off, or that the product itself becomes faulty after a month, supposedly the common reason as to why. Is due to the fact that eventually the usb pushes itself inside the device and causes the fan to either not work or to be hitting the plastic loudly. I cant say if this is true or not. But I am hesitant on buying this product from what I've read, and with no instructions. On one side though it does look like a solid product. But I feel like there is a catch or that it's one of those things that looks too good to be true.

so you're telling me that adding a faster, more air flow fan, pretty much directly the the heatpipe, wont cool your switch more.....? out of all the ones i've seen this one seems to be the one most likely to actually help

Does this radiator pull air or push it inside?? 🤔 If it pulls it might help a bit If it pushes it won’t don’t a thing
@hteekay

It pulls the hot air out, that's why it's on top, the way this dude explains it confuses us because he mixed the function of the "radiator fan" with the Dock fan. It's not radiator but at least it's an exhaust fan.

In my opinion just get one of those small tiny fans and have it rest right next to it. It' won't overheat since the fan outside of the console is pushing out the heat.

For best cooling I would use a dock fan and the radiator at the same time, so there’s more cooling difference

Actually these fans can work,. I've done thermal testing on products for a major company for years. As long as the fan is stronger than the internal, there is a good seal to the case, and it's moving air in the same direction as the internal fan; it can be quite effective. A fan that just sits by a vent with no seal will have very little effect, since most air is lost around the edges. A fan that is blowing air in while the internal is pushing air out; will cause cooling problems. I've seen people do this, and wonder why it's not working. Granted that is not a "radiator", but it does appear to be a fairly decent design for what it is. I'm not sure if the use of the word "radiator" was intentionally deceptive, or a translation issue, but as a fan; I'd say it would work very well.

Basically all i do when my switch is docked, is basically open the back panel for more hot air to escape and it seems to do alright.

That "radiator" is doing more than just sitting on the top tho. It's pulling air from the vent -- moving more air and seems like it works great.

I have a razer edge pro for people who don't know it's a mini computer in a tablet form and used a cooler similar to this product, it gave me 20c lower temps using msi afterburner to monitor it. Why not play the switch for a hour then While its running still attach the fan and see if it does have some improvement. Saying that pulling fresh air over the fins is only cooling the back and not the internals is just ignorant IMO.

What i want to know is why they haven’t fixed the Ethernet adapter bug, it keeps using the internet while docked, and it gets the Switch hot while it’s docked! It’s been documented for more than a year, and still is not being fixed!

I wouldn't trust any "cooling solution" that messes with the actual airflow, either by forcing in or pulling out air. It can render the internal cooling system inefficient and even damage it. The only external cooling solution I would use is one that makes the ambient air around the intakes cooler.

The switch it self isn't useful my little bro has I feel bad for him every time I see him playing it, mostly because no one never want too play with him bcuz it mostly has ports of old games or port of games thats on other platforms, the best port on the switch is breath of the wild which I have on PC. The switch will be dead soon.

I have a laptop fan called Opolar that does the same thing as the radiator. got mine back in like September it has a lot bigger fan granted made for laptops and a temperature gauge it indeed does work keeps the system alot cooler. Also found plugging the fan into a usb3 jack over usb2 allows for more power consumption and fan will run faster does put off alittle noise but if vhf you crank up but isnt louder then my ps4. But the best thing to do is buy a 3d printed piece that redirects the intake to the right rear that's under the circuit board. To draw air away from the chamber were the circuit board puts off heat. It be no different then a car drawing near from under the hood versus a cold air intake. Warmer air is less dense and reduces how much air you have to push through system to get heat out. I seen a 9 degree drop in temperature from this part alone link at bottom. I am also someone who switch has warped from the heat it put off and only play in dock mode. My mix of the 3d print part and fan my system usually runs about 5 degrees hotter then room temp (checked off exhaust heat) www.googleadservices.com/pagead/aclk?sa=L&ai=DChcSEwjYqOvp7JXiAhVNI4YKHQZ8BkgYABABGgJ2dQ&ohost=www.google.com&cid=CAESEeD2TY-MLvRvyMfA25pzSRp8&sig=AOD64_3R_7_k98JA2cHXyEOj_4ABTbgprA&ctype=70&q=&ved=2ahUKEwjgzuHp7JXiAhWts1kKHXU9AUQQwg96BAgLEAc&adurl=
