The Brown Hyena ( Parahyaena brunnea ) often also called the Strandwolf in Namibia, is one of 4 species in the hyena family. It is the rarest with only 5,000 left in the wild. Brown hyenas have a long thick shaggy coat and like all hyenas they have a sloping gait which gives them maximum efficiency for walking long distances, which they do each night in search of food. Known as scavengers, they have a fearsome attitude to gain a carcass, often winning in fights against top predators such as leopards or painted dogs or even lions. In the Skeleton Coast the Brown Hyena has learned to hunt fur seals, and in the dry desert dunes with a much less density of lions and other predators, they have to learn to hunt. They also seek out and feed on nara melons which provide a good source of nutrition & water, whilst also dispersing the seeds of the melon across the desert. In this video we see the hyena eating the remains of an Oryx , it is questionable that the hyena would have hunted this oryx, but not out of question if it was weak and in the middle of the night. Finding the brown hyena in the true soft sand desert is rare. Researchers have however been following brown hyenas who used to live by the coast (where it is easier to hunt as the seals are easy prey), but noticed that the hyenas were moving inland, possibly due to climate change.

The Science:
With over 1 Million species on the IUCN Red List of Endangered Species, animal populations are in decline the world over. This is due to many reasons but what we know for sure is to keep the planet's amazing diversity of wildlife we need to learn as much as possible about where and how these creatures live their lives. Collating all the data we are gathering will help build a picture of which habitats are key to sustaining the largest diversity of life on planet earth.
