Lionel Shriver's latest novel, Mania, paints a picture of a world in which any acknowledgment that individuals might have different levels of intelligence is considered an act hateful bigotry. Following in the footsteps of classics like Harrison Bergeron and 1984, Shriver avoids being overly preachy or one dimensional by giving us complex characters and fully fleshed out arguments, while keeping the satire about a half inch away from the actual world we live in.
