Normally I think of my first class as an introduction class. I will ask the student where they are from and what languages they speak. I will ask them if they like to travel and where they have travelled to? I will ask them about their job and what they studied in school. I would ask them about what they like to do in their freetime. Normally I will answer them as well. If i ask the student what languages they speak after they respond I will share that I speak mandarin at an HSK 3 level, I can read spanish and Portuguese as well as speak it at a conversational level, I can also speak Khmer at a conversational level. As for asking about where students like to travel I let them know the countries i have taught in. At the moment I live in Cambodia which most students seem quite interested in. Many students ask me what Cambodia is like so I will describe it to them. I also will say something in Khmer that i woudl if I were to go to market. I will express the challenges I face when learning the Khmer language

I think what she wanted to know and learn is the slang commonly used per region in England. She has advanced English and she can communicate well. She probably wanted to know the slang words that an average British uses in topics like sports, politics... How come she couldn't understand the British but she has a high level of proficiency? Or maybe she has a problem with a British accent especially if a British speaks fast.

@ELTExperiences
Жыл бұрын
I get students do an initial level test but I’m more interested in their conversation skills. While they are speaking, I am assessing vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation, etc. This then gives me the impression of their level. I'm just starting out on preply and although I think homework and self-study is very important, tbh I don't really like the idea of spending even more time - besides the lengthy preparation - outside of class prepping and correcting homework. Do you correct it in class together with the student? Or do you correct beforehand, then go through it together? Many thanks!

Thank you for your comment and questions. With regards to homework that I set, I check all work during the lesson with the student and focus on communicating with the student, providing the necessary feedback. @ELTExperiences
2 жыл бұрын
Hi Giuliana. Thank you for your question. The best way to deal with this is to share a Zoom link with your student once a trial lesson is booked - not before otherwise Preply will block your account. I usually share it in the comments. In this video, I used a pretend student who had been approached rather than a real student. The participant agreed to this and hopefully it replicates what other tutors may encounter in a real trial lesson. Once you have delivered the trial lesson, request the student to agree it or you could contact Customer Support to help.

Lessons are Preply are one on one. They used to have group lessons but they weren’t so successful and they withdrew them.

Is the material provided by preply?
@erikj3757

I'd switch to italki (I don't teach/work for them...yet) as tutors at PrePly aren't paid for the first lesson and aren't notified if a student has cancelled. I take lessons and taught (note taught as I quit) on Preply and it's frustrating. Some tutors are really good and a ton are who knows where from. I found a Spanish teacher and we study and pay directly and use Zoom. And their support is AWFUL. Good luck geting an answer in one attempt and in 5 days.

On preply do you have to supply all the material? And do lesson planning? Or does preply help you with anything?
@ELTExperiences
Жыл бұрын
If you teach English or Spanish then materials are provided but they are questionable. I’d recommend using or creating your own material. I’d also suggest planning lessons which follow a flipped or blended approach. 😊

I want to do as tutor of Hindi language.... And I know Hindi very well.... So how can I do it??? Can you please help me something???☹️🤞

In order to teach Hindi, you should focus on gaining a teaching qualification, developing the skills as well as experience by volunteering, and also share your passion by creating a Facebook or Discord group to those that might be interested in Hindi.

I have been procrastinating joining preply because i am not sure if it will work for me or not because i am not a native English speaker. Do you think i can use preply as my main source of income?
@ELTExperiences

It is possible but it would be best to build up your profile first and once you have built up your reputation then you can start to consider it being as a primary source of income.

Hi Monica. This student was Advanced level and I would suggest that they develop their cultural and idiomatic awareness. Other than this, the student should be also develop confidence when discussing and communicating about different topics. I hope this helps. 😊
