Familiar with the 8rpm records? Sometimes I see the giveaway 9 inch flexis of magazines. Tragically it seems most equipment and the ten inch regular press of full novels were purged and destroyed by the library of Congress talking books program. Before I even saw JAWS I heard the novel read on a set of those specialized records. I had a 4 speed BSR component turntable with duel cassette and radio as a kid. That machine simply would not die. It was amazing.

It's not specifically for Seeburg 1000. 16 rpm used to be a thing, it was primarily for 'talking book' records, though there was music released in the format as well. Seeburg 1000 records were never intended for private use. I had a Bradford console for a while. Not bad at all for what was essentially a 'store brand' unit. I traded it (and a spare VoM changer) for a Magnavox Astro-Sonic, because the Magnavox was identical to the one my dad owned.

I think Seeburg was well known for their 7 inch 45 jukeboxes. Muzak was the name I always heard about elevator and retail store music. They had 16 inch discs on a special turntable and later had tape cassettes for the commercial music. Lots of older record changers usually had a 16 2/3 speed on them. Great day 1 video!

Well some were made by Columbia however they were also made by RCA Custom, and DECCA as well (it varied greatly). Today for someone like me with a two speed I'd just play them at 33 1/3 to transfer them to the PC then slow it down in Audacity to proper speed. Yeah I am a subscriber to three channels that host Seaburg and other BGM in other formats. I play these in a media player with another player playing rain sounds while I sleep to quell my tinnitus (it acts up in total silence).

16 2/3 rpm is half the speed of 33.3 rpm It means you can use certain DJ turntables with +/- 50% pitchfader. Like the Pioneer PLX-1000 or Reloop RP-7000MK2. Especially the Reloop one is very versatile, since it can do 33/45/78rpm with +/-50% pitch

The way I would play it is put it on my turntable at 33-1/3 RPM, and record it into Audacity. Then I would remove the RIAA equalization, change Audacity playback to 1/2 speed, and restore the RIAA equalization. This would theoretically produce high frequencies up to twice the digital audio range, but probably not coming from a 16-2/3 RPM record, actually.

It just occurred to me: I'm surprised nobody every made a "stereo" version with one playlist of songs on the left channel, and a second playlist of songs on the right. You could double the playing time of these records... quadruple the length of a typical record. Nobody ever did that, did they? Switch between left and right, playing the side twice to get double the music?

These are real collectors items now because Seeburg insisted on all records being returned to them. I'm in the UK & we would call this "Test Card" music - it was played on TV channels during the day (before daytime TV) for installations in houses. I've just managed to find a disc from someone in the US on Ebay. Cost a lot, but I think they're so cool. . Back in the day, 16rpm was mainly used for language learning - like Lingaphone.

That was their original purpose, yes. The very first 16 rpm records available to the public were word-for-word reading of the ENTIRE King James New Testament. It was a set of twenty-four 7" records, each containing about an hour of material. The 16 rpm format was so new when they were released (1953) that only Zenith and some Voice of Music record players natively had the speed setting. For everyone else, the record company sold a special little speed-reducing adapter. Weird little gadget, but it worked.

You’d need to use a moving coil cartridge for certain, as the moving magnet cartridges only rise to 20kHz or so, whereas the moving coil cartridges rise to 40kHz. The audio at the end being only half the frequency it was to start with necessitates the use of the moving coil cartridge and a recording sampling rate of at least 80kHz as per Nyquist. Ordinarily to hear the difference between moving magnet and moving coil cartridges one has to be a cat or dog.

Well the 16 and 2/3 s was half of 33 and 1/3 more or less. It was used for talking books for the blind and educational voice recordings, as well as background music. If you will notice they (background music) have very little bass or dynamic range as this allowed for tighter spacing of the record groove. (more playing time) The music systems used, had cheap full range speakers on low quality 70 volt line transformers and would not have produced much bass anyway. Another interesting system by Muzak used a subcarrier on a local FM station to broadcast to a single channel fm tuner which decoded the sub carrier thereby eliminating to need for recordings in the store. I think they went out of their way to make these records difficult to play on a regular turntable, although I really can't see why anyone would want to listen to this low-fi trash anyway.
