We deal with something similar within the autism community, but much worse. It is interesting to think about how something as impactful as this might be made accessible to people with additional barriers, like agoraphobia, ARFID, MCAS, other medical conditions that affect what foods you can eat safely, etc. There are SO many facets to why ketogenic medical interventions are inaccessible, but I wonder what kind of research this will inspire in the future.

@reinerschafer1708

For some, the ketogenic diet will raise cholesterol (moreso if you are lean). For some it lowers cholesterol (moreso if you are overweight or obese). What it does for nearly everyone is lowers triglycerides, raises HDL cholesterol and changes the cholesterol pattern from Type B (small dense - what's commonly found in arterial plaque) to Type A (larger particles associated with better health and rarely found in plaque).

For me i don't have a problem with you sharing the success you've had with medical keto, I think it's wonderful you've had such a reduction in symptoms. My issue is when you start to talk about how perhaps the "american diet" is causing mental illness, or demonizing food that is not considered "whole foods." I would ask that you are more careful about the way you speak about food because many people with mental illness/neurodivergence struggle with eating disorders and this is a very slippery slope towards eating restriction.

Lauren is just parroting what virtually every medical doctor says these days, "Eat as little processed food as possible." Thank you Lauren! Everybody has the right to be questionative, skeptical. Schizophrenia is an extremely complicated, confusing, certainly multifaceted condition that continues to befuttle people on a daily basis as to how many layers there are. Anyone would be skeptical to say that a diet is treating this in totality. Maybe or maybe not the diet would work for you. But the takeaway is to know that these things, these mitochondrial changes in mental illness are happening within the body and should not be thought of as an imbalance of chemicals in the brain needing to be corrected…as psychiatry has really not been able to do a whole lot for a lot of no one. These are new ways to think of how mental illness is treated

Also, I firmly believe that metabolic therapy, when used correctly, can really make massive improvements not only to mental well-being but also other chronic illnesses as well. My aunt suffers from rheumatoid arthritis, but over the last 8 years has alleviated symptoms using metabolic therapy. What got her started with researching and beginning her own journey was the horrible side effects and liver damage she was experiencing from the heavy duty meds she was on to treat her illness...and was still crippled by the illness! Now she moves around pain free after many years of sticking religiously to her diet and tapering down her medications slowly until she was completely off them. She has told my mom she'll never go back if she can help it because her quality of life has improved so much.

I fully support you on this yourney. I have been following a keto diet now for 8 months and I can relate to all the things that you are saying. I was diagnosed with depression and anxiety about 20 years ago and every few years I build up resistance to the medication and had to adapt my medication. Luckily my path crossed with my new psychiatrist and we started metabolic therapy. I can honestly say that it works. I am now on a very light anti-depressant and mood stabiliser and we are working towards stopping the meds. Did not think that I would ever feel as good as I am feeling today. My whole life changed. For the first time in many years a feel alive and not just surviving. Thank you so much for your honesty and courage. I follow you with a hopeful heart.

A keto diet could never cure my depression. The antipsychotic I take helps my depression better than the antidepressant I take. I've never received much help from antidepressants. They usually just change your bad feelings into a more manageable sensation. but

Have you looked into Mikhaila Peterson's battle with depression. Regular keto does not work for her either and she has had to go full carnivore (actually only ruminant animal meat), but it's working for her. Seems like as soon as she tries introducing other foods back into her diet, her depression returns. Sucks to live that way but she does it because the depression is so debilitating, that its worth it for her.

About identity and neurodiversity, I think psychotic illnesses and something like autism for example are massively different on this regard. Autism isn't a mental illneses. Our cognition isn't impaired, it's just different. The struggles that come with being autistic are a result of living in a society that is built for the majority of people constituted by those with the normative neurotype instead of for everyone. It's also different in the sense that you can't divorce an autistic person from their autism, it's a lifelong genetic condition that will never go into remission and that is based on having a whole other neurotype that is wired fundamentally different to how the neurotype of those without autism are wired, and it completely shapes the entirety of how you experience the world as a person, from how you processes sensory stimuli, to how you talk, how you think, everything, so an autistic person can't be divorced from their autism.

I recently started taking high quality living probiotics as a last ditch effort to help with my anxiety and GI distress feedback loop caused by the anxiety and after a month I feel like a new person. I don’t need klonapin everyday, I’m not having panic attacks or running to the bathroom in the middle of a meeting. This experience showed me firsthand how closely diet is linked to mental health. I always knew this on some level but the personal experience has been life changing.

I think something that should be reflected upon is that there are many conditions physical and mental that can go into remission but aren't "cured" so to speak. For instance, eating disorders are often thought to not be "cured" or people with cancer. Often, when they go into remission, they still have a proclivity for the cancer to come back. So they don't give up on preventative measures like a yearly CT. Similar to how it is probably recommended that you still see a psychiatrist or therapist while in remission to avoid symptoms to come back. I think you are so brave and graceful and vulnerable to be going through this change and sharing it with us.
@louisehogg8472

Essentially we're ALL in remission from dying/fatally damaging ourselves. None of us are ever cured of this. Alternatively ANYONE without symptoms OR tumours IS cured - BUT we all still have our susceptibility to SOMETHING.

And then there are people who weigh food, track macros, check blood ketones and maintain good ketone levels with a keto coach and do not have improvement. What works for one person may not work for another. It’s true with medicine and it’s true with other therapies too. Very glad you are doing well. Absolutely. My personal hypothesis on this is that it depends on what the cause of the mitochondial dysfunction is. If it was caused by heavy metals for instance, the chance of changing your diet to fix it is probably low.

We're so happy for you Lauren. I think while discussion on the use of metabolic therapy is important in patient groups, it's really up to the person themselves on what works best for managing their mental health and life. I don't think other people have the right to impose one way or the other. But for myself, I do notice a marked improvement in reducing depressive symptoms, dissociative symptoms, and perhaps reduce the risk of mania when I am paying attention to my diet and reducing fats, added sugars, and acids. Conversely, whenever I am eating well but return to habitual eating where I consume whatever I crave -- I often end up feeling depressed and potentially end up in a dissociative episode. What I mean is, metabolic therapy with licensed professionals is something we - as a plural system - want to try so it's easier to engage in the world... Nobody can take that instinct for us to try away from us, and we won't impose what other people need to do for themselves. Trust your mind, your heart, and your instincts -- even if it doesn't agree with the people around you. You're either right, or you're facing a consequence that you're most capable of handling than otherwise. But hey-- that's just advice that works for ~us.~ And that's the whole point. ;)

You’re doing a great thing Lauren. Keep it up. I think that maybe you have had such a great and fairly rapid response, is because at least by already exercising and being thin and relatively metabolically healthy…pre Keto…those might be factors for the robust response. Something to keep in mind. I have had a tremendous response with a strict medical keto diet for severe resistant depression and social anxiety. For 5 months was basically in remission, slumped back to mild depression doing the same things but am working on getting back to feeling 100%. The other benefits, best physical health in my life, have lost 115lbs in 15 months, have a lot of energy, exercise daily, gut issues gone, sleep way better and feel rested, I can go on and on. So I’m a lifer for Keto…just gotta make some tweaks. I’m not sure why some people are so skeptical. I think it is more likely the chronic sufferers and much older people than yourself would be my guess. It is hard having dealt with a chronic illness for many many years without help from any medication combos and from your best efforts. It is demoralizing. Me included. 27 years of unrelenting, debilitating depression. Many years lost. No family of my own, no girlfriend for many years, not able to work in my career of music consistently, and most years unable to work. Pretty depressing quality of life over these 27 years of depression. So there are a lot of us out there. I think you should keep in mind that many people with something that looks similar and didn’t have the trajectory that you have had may feel bitter about their situation and may be projecting on you, so that is something to keep in mind. I am not one of those people…I am all for this modality. But as bad as your story is and what you have gone through, there are a lot more worse stories with very chronic and debilitating lives…so something to keep in mind. For future content. I would love to see videos and videos with experts regarding hurdles and barriers of keto for mental illness. How to optimize, how to keep it working, etc. Things like electrolyte imbalances, salt intake, exercise to optimize keto like HIIT, adjunctive natural therapies like cold therapy. And of course my main interest is troubleshooting why keto works less now for me and others than in the beginning. That is for mental illness. Because the physical benefits just keep coming. Thanks:)

I think a lot of issues circle around the question of how one defines a "ketogenic diet" or a "medical ketogenic diet". I have a friend who has a child who has had extremely severe epileptic seizures and used a medical ketogenic diet for a significant period of time to try to deal with these seizures. The process of creating this child's meals, including the math required, was mind-blowing and very very unlike the "keto diet" other friends have used to lose weight! Ultimately, it didn't prove to be a successful long-term choice for this particular child, for a variety of reasons. But it really highlighted the difference between what most people consider "keto" to be, and what the actual medical standard is. I wish you only good luck and continued success moving forward.

Privilege my behind, girl. Like most of us you got dealt a bad hand. You are managing the best way you can. If money is an issue to help people, that just means we as a society want to freaking gate keep taking care of others. Which is not surprising because it is in our interest to keep some people down, we are indeed horrible people in our own rights. (but as I stated earlier we are all doing our best with what tools and knowledge we have) where were the privileged people who knew about keto when you didn't know how to properly track your keto? Those things all seem to improve on a ketogenic diet. Have you looked into it much? the ketogenic diet has more published research on it than any other way of eating. I too was skeptical and did lots of research before adopting it 5 1/2 years ago. I will most likely be on it the rest of my life now due to what it has done for my overall health. @reinerschafer1708

It's similar for treating diabetes with a ketogenic diet (although there is probably more published science on that). It's helped put Type 2 diabetes into remission for hundreds of thousands of people (probably millions) yet my doctor is not allowed to officially recommend it because it's not in the "guidelines" she needs to adhere to. She could even be on a ketogenic diet herself to better her health, yet she could still possibly get reprimanded (even suspended) if she recommends it to her patients. We live in a bizarre world.

Is there truly such thing as recovery? I know there is not for Bipolar 1 and 2 but that "Remission" actually means "Maintenance". Being new to schizoaffective I am not sure if the schizo part is forever, but I will say the schizo stuff has never bothered me since I noticed it when I was basically a kid. I was told over and over it was my imagination so that's what I thought, like how everyone sees floaters. I have had some close calls while driving. Okay, you just clarified. I don't agree with the name change. You still have schizoeffective disorder. You are treating it with diet instead of medications. Which is great! I think that it is useful to have alternative treatments to medications. But even if you have controlled diabetes you are still a diabetic. I think that having controlled schizophrenia is the same. Diabetics have to change their diet if they want to be healthy. Same as you. You are are not "after" your illness. I would say that "Living Better With Schizophrenia" is much more accurate.
